Essays/LORs/Other

Essay: I really hope these will be good by October. My personal statement is about my most prized possession and how it caused me to fall in love with my major: A Napkin.

Letters of Recommendation:
Princeton/Yale Program: I’ve become close with my counselors here, they said they’re going to mention my first semester of junior year (I got 3 semester Bs)and how I worked 2 part-time jobs when my mom got surgery and couldn’t work for a while
Sophomore Math/Elective Teacher: I know that this letter of recommendation will be the best letter colleges could ever receive on my behalf. He’s such a genuine teacher, I tell him everything lol
AP Lang Teacher: 8/10 Second Favorite, we spend a lot of time outside of school since he was my basketball coach/debate club moderator. Plus he’s an amazing writer!!!
Law Internship Supervisor: 5/10, I have no idea what they’re gonna write so it’s 50/50 for me
I have another internship supervisor I’m thinking of asking for a letter of rec from since they’re a Columbia Alumni? But Idk if the letter will help since they don’t know me very well.

A few comments:

– Most importantly congratulations on your wonderful accomplishments to date. You are a viable candidate to any college.

– That said, please understand that Columbia (and all the elite colleges) must be considered reaches for any unhooked applicant. These colleges often have single digit acceptance rates and get many more applications from well qualified candidates than they have spots available.

–Applying ED is a positive factor for Columbia. But before applying ED, be sure to run the net price calculator and determine that Columbia appears affordable.

–I would not ask for that extra LOR from the law internship supervisor. At most I would send two classroom teacher LORs and one supplemental LOR. More is not better. There is no particular benefit to getting a LOR from a Columbia alum (admissions cares about you, not the letter’s author) and it sounds like a LOR from a person that doesn’t know you particularly well could dilute your other, stronger recommendations.

Thank you so much!

I’ve been feeling hopeless with not having a 4.0 UW and possibly going test optional as FGLI but your POV definitely gave me hope! Though I totally understand that these schools are reaches for anyone- I still have my safeties that I’ll be fine attending as well

My mom and I have ran the Columbia’s net price calculator numerous times to see if we’d get different results but it amounts up to $0 + around $2400 Student work study ? I’m still not sure if that’s good or bad in cost and if it’s accurate enough for ED

If it appears affordable it seems fine to apply ED. Pay attention to any costs that may not be included in the net price calculator such as travel, health insurance, books, spending money (NYC is expensive), etc.

IMO as long as you have academic/financial safety schools you would be happy to attend it is fine to give a few reaches a shot – that way you never have to wonder “what if.”

For UGA you should see if there is an honors college/program you might qualify for.

Lastly, if your username is your real name you should change it. How Do I Change My Username?

Good luck
