Hi, I’m a high school junior very interested in pursuing a career in dentistry! I plan on applying to every accelerated dental program (BS/DMD) there is since there are only a handful. Based on your guys’ experience, which ones do you think I have a good chance of getting into?
Here are my stats:
GPA: UW - 4.0/4.0 | W: 4.409/4.5
Relevant Courses: AP Statistics, AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Calculus AB/BC, Human Physiology Honors, Leadership in Healthcare Science Honors, AP Latin, AP CSP.
ECs (Some I am anticipating since I have already began them):
Latin Honor Society Member
National Honor Society Member
Stony Brook Pre-College Program (Dive into Dental Sciences)
Asian Culture Club Secretary
Red Cross Club Treasurer
Local Community Service Organization
Volunteer Tutor in Math 35 hrs(9–11th grade)
Dentist Shadowing 40 hrs so far (9–12th grade summers)
Sterilization Technician (10–12th grade)
Calligraphy Business
Neighborhood/Community Events and Organization (like dental supply drives)
They’re all very selective so you stand a chance and should apply to a few… but it’s more logical for you to apply to the honors college at your flagship&other colleges that your parents can easily afford.
Will you be able to shadow a dentist next year?
Had a job, perhaps at a dentist’s desk?
Volunteered with people different from yourself?
Perhaps been a gopher/helped with registering patients for RAM?
BSDMD programs want to see that you know what you’re getting into.
See what languages are spoken, beside English, in your region. See if Community Education offers courses to catch you up, or if you could take a dual enrollment class at a college.
