Chance Me for Choate! please(✿◡‿◡)

Hey guys! I am an 8th grader who’s applying to Choate for a spot as a 9th grade boarding student and I want to know my chances. I will acknowledge I don’t think I’m very great compared to other applicants but I’m very determined. But, if I don’t get in I won’t die.

General Info: Hispanic/Latinx, Female, 9th Grade Boarding, Live in Connecticut (about 40 min away from Choate but can’t do Day because of transportation issues), 13yrs old, Full Financial Aid

Stats: took the ISEE and got all 7’s in 80th percentiles

Grades: During 7th grade I got all A+’s except for one A and the first 2 quarters of eighth grade have been all A+’s except for 3 A’s

(side note: my candidate profile was a 6/10 because I only wrote down like 4 activities)

Interview: 8.5/10 I was a little bit awkward, but my interviewer was very attentive, and kind and I was very well spoken but I forgot my questions :skull: (also it was so much better since usually I have to translate but he luckily spoke Spanish and was able to talk to my mom)

Essays: 10/10, I spent many, many hours writing all of them and my main one was very personal to me and I talked about my dual-identity, why I got into community service and why I’m so dedicated to it, and that I know my potential and what I can offer at Choate

Math Rec: He knows I am one of the hardest workers in his class and I do have a good relationship with him, but he didn’t get to know me that well in the beginning of the year when he made it so a 7/10

English Rec: I would say the same thing for language arts but maybe an 8/10 instead

Personal/Extracurricular Rec: A very dear family friend wrote it who used to attend choate summer programs and was previously a Choate Icahn Scholar as well (she might have recommended me to be one, I don’t know) 11/10

Counselor Rec: She knows I am an outstanding student and I’m very involved with my school community 10/10

Sports: I did Track and Field doing Shot Put 7th grade and plan to return this year for my 2nd year. I also did the Co-ed Dance Team at my school this year for the winter season.

Instruments: Flute for 2 years (not very advanced)

Volunteering: I have volunteered for the past 5 years for a non-profit community organization. I volunteer at community info events and I’m a social media manager for the organization (2 to 6 hrs. depending on the week)

Clubs: Yearbook (2yrs), National Junior Honor Society (1 yr), and a new community service, school club (1yr) that teachers nominate students for to represent my school community and I also get a lot of volunteer hours for that too.

Other important info: Attended Choate’s fly-in program, Choate Connections, in December and tried to sell myself and the admissions team seemed to like it. I also attended UCONN’s SPARK program which is a STEM program for girls

• Hook: FGLI, Volunteering, into STEM and social reform, and maybe my personality but I might be a little too proud…

Awards: Honor Rolls all 2 years, 1st Place State Essay Contest Winner, many Outstanding Achievement and Excellence in (subject)'s, Presidential Education Award, 2 Student of the Months, and some more awards.

Thank you to anyone who reads this and I’m just hoping for some yeses or no’s from you guys and I’ll update on March 10th!

Very very likely you will get in

The OP has a chance but is not “very very likely” to get in. The acceptance rate for Choate is in the mid-teens, and most applicants are qualified. OP, make sure you have other options for high school, just in case.

Thank you both for forming your own opinions on my chances and replying back. I have applied to other schools, but Choate is the only highly competitive one I’ve applied to.

Believe in yourself … if you believe it will manifest … be positive … not a lot of kids can achieve all that you have achieved … Believe !!!

Thank you so much for your words of encouragement!! I’ll update you guys in 23 days.

it seems likely that you’ll get in!! choate would be missing out if they rejected you, but i’m sure you’d do well in any school.

this inspired me to create a cc account since you reminded me a bit of myself. (just since you’re a hispanic girl, and after lurking on cc a handful of times i haven’t seen one). i hope you get into whatever school you feel is best for you!!

Totally agree with @ameridad .

Unless @Evensounded and @guavacandies are in admissions at Choate, they shouldn’t be so convinced that it’s “very very likely” that someone will get it, or that Choate will regret it otherwise.

You’re a good student. Your test scores are okay, sufficient to show that you are academically capable, but not through the roof. You’re an URM, that should help. You’re asking for “Full Financial Aid” and Choate isn’t need blind, so that makes things more challenging.

The financial aid factor could be a tipping point between accepted and waitlisted, especially since you’re essentially a local applying to BS.

Thank you so much!! You’re very kind for saying that and I appreciate your reply.

Thank you for your input on my current situation. I understand financial aid is going to lower my chances, so I appreciate you addressing that. Thank you for sharing your opinion!

Hey girl! I wanted to update the people who replied to my thread and wanted to tell you some great news, I got in!!!
