Your SAT would need to be 1450 and you’d have to apply to the OOs cover scholarship too. All as soon as the app opens, which would be in the summer, because their number is limited (so, more or less on a first come first served basis among those with the prerequisite grades and scores).
noted I honestly dont want to go thru this again later this year, but if I have to, I will
Hello!
So I did not apply to Smith , but they sent me a mail of an extended deadline 1/27, and that’s really nice. So I was wondering if I should still apply or not (keeping in mind my SAT score) cuz there’s no way they didn’t receive enough apps or anything, so I think its like an acceptance rate thing where they’ll advertise a lot and extend deadlines and whatnot so that more students will apply and then they can reject way more students, subsequently reducing their acceptance rate cuz its a good look. Idk I just thought about it cuz an extended dd seems odd to me. And i also don’t want to look bad by applying after their initial deadlne.
Thoughts? Thank you!
Why not apply? And isn’t Smith test optional?
Smith is test optional and you’re applying to the Economics& Women/gender major right?
What’s your EW/M split?
What grade are you getting right now in Maths and English?
Yes but my school is small, class sixe smaller and private and not in the US so me not submitting my test score gives them one less dimension to know that I’m academically fit to be there
Probably I pick as the spirit leads on the common app (its a gamble but usually its smth along these lines)
EW680/M600 ’
B and A respectively, its my first non A letter grade since like the 8th grade and I’m wondering why t has to happen rn. I know its cuz our last exam was suppose to be a Mock waec, so topics wwe hadn’t learnt (that teachers told u like a week before exams we’d have to self learn them at home. That wouldn’t have been a problem if we didnt have like 9 topics per subject (10) to learn by ourselves in the span of a week. So naturally, everyone’s results were not the usual, still have the highest gpa and class rank is still #1 tho, so thats a bit ok)
Thank you!
Also just realized that I took off way too many colleges and have 3 spots unfilled, so I was thinking of Smith, Wheaten, Wooster, and then some HBCUs I know friends have gotten into like barry and grambling (even tho I’m not sure how they afforded it lol). First three have all sent me mails of an extended deadline so I was just wandering what I should do because I didn’t realize I had over chopped my list last minute. I don’t want to necessarily waste the spots on reaches cuz I feel like I have enough of those. I just want to apply to colleges where I have a relatively good shot of getting in even tho I won’t get full aid (I think I’ll have a higher efc than 3k now cuz of my relatives and also loans. I know no one particularly want me to take out loans but I was being delusional when I thought I would apply to somewhere like Williams but fear would not even allow me submit an app there, knowing damn well Wnl, Wesleyan, Carleton, Denison etc are alr taking up space on my list and rejection has been becoming a real thing since like Monday so idk.
Thank you!
Also, my physics prof passed 3 wks before exam. He was very sick before that so he wasn’t consistent with his comings even before that. Dont know if my councelor will explain these when she sends in my grades tho, if she’ll even send them in at all
Efc isn’t about potential loans or potential help from relatives.
It’s derived solely from parents’ income, assets, investments, etc.
Assets are how much your house is worth if your parents bought it, how much the mortgage (loan to buy a house) was and how much they’ve paid back. Do they own fields and how much are these worth? Do they have more than one house? All of these are assets.
Do you employ servants or does a house woman come once a week to help your mother? (They’d likely think this is an expense that should be directed to college costs).
If you attend private school, how much is tuition, transportation, uniform, sports, supplies? The amount would be considered available for your college costs but would be set aside as unavailable for your siblings.
On ISFAA they also typically ask if your parents own a car or cars, age and make (brand), in part because a family with a 2020 Audi and a 2023 BMW paint a different portrait than a family with a 1998 Toyota and a 2019 Peugeot moped.
However they won’t concern themselves with what others have offered since they have no legal responsibility towards you.
You can use grandparents’ offer for the “emergency funds” and “airplane costs”, question though.
If you have three spots left, you can use Wheaton MA, Wooster, and one HBCU. If you submit your SAT score you may still get a scholarship from Bowie State or Virginia State (in formerly segregated States, U of+ name of the state= for White students, name of state+ State= for Black students. Nowadays both are open to all but a majority remain from either group.)
Make sure your guidance counselor does mention it as it must have affected student preparation, not to mention shock/sadness a teacher’s death would cause in a small school.
The counselor could also mention how local violence les to school disorganization that impacted your class since one of your teachers was seriously stabbed, plus one teacher died from illness.
Be strategic.
Economics&Women/gender studies (or Development Economics&Women/gender studies) match your profile best, both academically and for ECs. If you have to pick pick Women’s studies because it fits you well and is less requested.
oh
Yh they do all these, I filled them out in the CSS too. I would have elaborated more but I searched “chance me for williams, mount holyoke” today and this and my other thread came up first. Damn near gave me a heart attack, like its the first time I’m realizing this thread isn’t like hidden in the back of CC or something and no other student can see it. They can, and while I don’t mind being open or wtv, none of my peers needs to know this much about me
Thank you, I’ll check when their dds are cuz I’m trying to cubmit all my financial aid forms for other chls I’ve alr applied to and euggghhh, its pissing me off so bad cuz I always have to restart if my laptop dies and I filled all of them on a flash only for it to go missing on 1/15 so that was not infuriating at all
I forgot about this
I’m just now realizin this so like UVirigina -white and Virginia State -blacks?? I thought it was a private public school thing like Boston Uni and Boston College, or like liberal arts state uni thing like Conn College and UConn type thing
But thank you! I’ll look into the HBCUs to add!
She’s…nice (scary) on her good days so asking her for help took a lot, even tho I did most things from her end myself (except the lor), now she’s saying she’s tired and I should pay her money to continue and I just have so many things to say to her regarding that. If it was possible, I would have swapped her out for my class teacher but its not so I guess I’m paying her to upload predicted waec grades and send in my first trimester grades I really hate these type of ppl who half ass things but I can’t do anything about it rn cuz those things need to be sent so
Yh I’ll mention it in the letter, if i can get to it.
one stabbed, 3 died over the last days of last term/ christmas break
but yh ill explain it
Thank you!
Noted, thank you!
Yes, those were just examples of elements that may be taken into account by colleges to determine your family’s ability to pay - not questions expecting answers to post publicly (good reaction though, never post this type of info on a public forum).
Oh thanks!
This only applies to formerly segregated States.
In the Midwest, the “State” moniker mainly applies to land grant universities (look up Morrill Act if you want to know more).
University of Minnesota vs. Minnesota State, university of Michigan vs. Michigan State only indicates that one has a “land grant” (or sea grant, etc) mandate = must maintain a college of engineering, agriculture, + usually Education and Nursing. They were coeducational from the start.
In California, University of California vs. California State University indicates what type of public university we’re talking about, CSU vs UC - for instance, Cal State Fullerton serves the area around Fullerton and mainly offers Bachelor’s and Masters degrees. UC Davis recruits from the entire State and has very strong PHD programs, high level research, etc.
College means University OR within a large university what is sometimes called “faculty” in British English: College of Arts and Science.
The term can be used to mean the same thing and distinguish from another similar university: Boston College and Boston University are both private universities in Boston
Connecticut College vs. University of Connecticut= yes, the distinction is private vs. Public.
It’s better if your GC included it rather than you. You can prepare the sentence for the GC to cut/paste it though.
Wrt money: I know It’s endemic where teachers are poorly compensated and corruption is common. In some Nigerian schools students pay to have their grades changed
(and in some countries sexual harassment of girls by teachers who gave a bad grade for that purpose is a known phenomenon) … so at least your school is not one of those. In the US, a teacher requesting extra money from a student or they won’t send a grade report would be in serious trouble.
Ohhh, missed that part
This was what I was familiar with before I started and was so confused
I read my false info in a book (For the fans by nyla k, its in there iswr
)
Thank you!
