Chance me for Williams, Washington and Lee, Mount Holyoke [international, 4.0 GPA, <$3k]

I have a daughter at Wheaton, so feel free to ask any questions! The observation that Wheaton hasn’t constructed any new buildings is incorrect. A new dorm, Pine Hall, opened in 2019, and the science building, which is magnificent, opened in 2011.

Ah. For some reason, it wasn’t popping up on my search attempts, but Mars center certainly has the look and feel of a modern and up-to-date college science center:

and would more than explain Wheaton’s current outstanding debt.

I have a student at Wheaton as well - graduating soon. And he has a younger sibling who attends a highly resourced college, so I’ve been able to see a bit about what their two different experiences have been like (of course their experiences are different for more reasons than just the financial resources of their respective colleges).

Happy to answer any questions for the OP about Wheaton as I saw another parent of a student also offered. Also, while we don’t currently live in Massachusetts, I grew up there so can answer some questions related to the general area as well. @greensnwells feel free to send me a private message.

For those offering to share their or their kid’s experience at the schools in consideration, please remember this student will only be 15/16 years old freshman year (if they move forward with the current plan). Keep that in mind when advising on both the campus and surrounding areas.

Not sure if I can call them tho until after exam week (and Hollins dd ends exam week) but I will mail them… and Hollins (800$ deposit :sob: ) regarding their deposit thank you!

I’m not letting it, its just standing there :man_standing:

Thank you

Umm..also turns out the I-20 process starts AFTER choosing to enroll (ther’s an option on the portal) so to get access to upload those documents, I have to click on the option “Yes, I am planning to enroll”. You technically commit to a school with paying the deposit right? So if I were to click on the option to enroll and submit it, and then not enroll because I found Hollins just the better place for whatever reason, would I be doing something illegal? I’m asking because I don’t want to choose to enroll late and then find out I missed the deadline for the document submission so yea.

Thank you!

omg thank you :hugs:

I understood very little but clearly got the last sentence lol, thanks

I will omg thank you

Yes, the I20 is specific to a particular school.

Yes, the process is:
March-April, gather info from colleges that admitted you (for US students who can: visit)
May 1 : enroll
You can deposit before May1 of course but take your time to decide
Once that’s been completed, within a week you’ll get the I20 and can start the process to get a visa. It’s likely to be more onerous this year than previously.

oh

So if I guess I’ll be enrolling at wheaton after april 1st cuz I’m still waiting for Spelma, columbia chicago and liu (that is if wheaton’s offer was still better and I got accepted to these colleges ofc) :pensive:

And reed I guess. My transcript from these last exams aren’t back yet so we’ll see!

Thank you. There was also this one person that said something about reed being particularly stressful or something along those lines. I would’ve tagged them but I’m not really sure who it is. I’ve read about reed a bit on reddit (and reddit only lol) and I’ve seen moderately good reviews about their academics and people, but that comment stuck with me so maybe there’s something there that I’m not seeing on reddit…I think it was @circuitrider but I’m not sure, but if it is you, would you mind explaining what you meant? Thank you!

It was @Mystics:

It’s an old stereotype of Reed that it was full of speed-addled workaholics. But some of these college stereotypes haven’t been updated in thirty or forty years. Reed is a LAC in a wonderful part of the country, the Pacific Northwest, and IMHO deserves serious consideration.

I hesitate to recommend Columbia College, that would not be a traditional college experience (it’s urban with no campus to speak of), and they are having financial difficulties.

As for Reed, have you done a virtual admissions session? If not you should. Reed is a fit school, more so than other schools. And yes, academics are intense there. There are no varsity sports, and not much in the way of school spirit. There are a few club sports. It is small, about 1,300 students (Wheatonhas around 1,700), and has a high proportion lgbtq students, for example, 22% identify as non-binary, see here: Detailed Enrollment - Institutional Research - Reed College

Wheaton is a great option, as is Hollins. I hope you can get excited about each.

Columbia Chicago is financially troubled. I wouldn’t come from across the world to attend there.
Reed is an excellent college though it may be even more of a cultural shock than the other colleges.
All 3 colleges (Reed, Wheaton, Hollins) are welcoming to LGBTQ students.
Good job on your exams
