Schools
(List of colleges by your initial chance estimate; designate if applying ED/EA/RD; if unsure, leave them unclassified)

If a scholarship is necessary for affordability, indicate that you are aiming for a scholarship and use the scholarship chance to estimate it into the appropriate group below; also, for colleges that admit by major or division, consider that in chance estimate.

  • Assured (100% chance of admission and affordability): Williams college
  • Extremely Likely: Minerva university
  • Likely: Haverford college
  • Toss-up: university of richmond
  • Colby university
  • Carleton
  • colgate
  • washington and lee
  • grinnell
  • hamilton
  • bowdoin
  • middlebury
  • smith college
  • NYU
  • connecticut college

I don’t know anything about Minerva, but nearly all of the others are reaches or high reaches. Why do you think Williams is “assured” when it accepts <8% of applicants? Our that Haverford (or any others) are “likely”? Also, what is your budget?

Also: this is an odd list for a potential computer science major.

What is your budget?

Unless your parents have made a very large donation to Williams and they are going to have a building with your family name on it, your acceptance there is not assured.

I agree this is an odd list for a CS major. If you clarify your budget and financial need, we can help suggest schools.

No university is assured or even likely for an international student. Chances go up if you are international and full pay, but still not “assured”.

Are you full pay, or will you need merit/financial aid?

actually I can’t pay for any school , so I want a generous financial aid.

Actually I can’t pay for any school, therefore I care about the financial aid more than the major.

Does Williams have an agreement with NASA/Alamein, SGA, or your school? If so, apply ED and you’re good to go. There are precious few universities in the US better than Williams for undergrads.

If not, how did you rank these colleges? Are these based on odds from previous years at your school?

Your GPA probably isn’t 3.7 in US terms. Are you expected to rank in the top 1% nationally on “end of 12th grade”/“Leaving certificate”/“baccalaureate” national exams? Higher (top 0.5%? Top 0.1%?)

Williams is very good for math. That degree would keep all doors open.

How to Know if Williams accept those or not ?

Yes. I ranked them based on odds from previous years at my school and other school in my country.

I am not sure that I got your third question, but I am planning or preparing to rank in the top 1% nationally on the 12th grade, but why did you asked this question ?

Thanks for your advice about major math at Williams, I will think about this, Actually I love math, but I think my chance at math is low since I do not have many activities and honors at it, but my grades in math at school are very good.

No. I need financial aid.

At all, or nearly all, of the colleges on your list, you would choose your major as an attending student, perhaps in the second term of your sophomore year.

Yes I know, do you mean that it does not matter ?

Does your HS have a history of sending student who need financial aid to US colleges?

Minerva might be highly likely for admission but they won’t meet your financial need. How much can your family contribute per year for college costs?

Do you have affordable options in your home country?

All of your schools besides Minerva are reaches for admission (unless there is something we still don’t know about Williams), as an international student needing financial aid. All but Bowdoin will take your level of financial need into account when making the admissions decision.

Have you taken 4 years of each of the 5 core subject areas (Eng, Soc Studies, Sci, Math, Foreign Language)?

Have you taken the SAT or ACT?

yes

Nothing

College Board reports a 1% acceptance rate for Minerva:

Minerva offers need-based financial aid packages:

yes but I want to study in the US not in my home country .

I took Soc studies, Sci, Math, and foreign language, but I did not take Eng. It’s not a core subject at prep or HSs in my country.

No.

Unless you know something about Williams (you say 100% chance of admission) - well I could see your entire list as a no. But perhaps you know something I don’t. Also you need aid - and perhaps you’ll qualify - but don’t forget, the school, not you, decides what you need. Most of these are need aware meaning if you have a lot of need, that’s a valid reason for them not accepting you. I think Bowdoin is the only need blind on your list.

I have no idea how Minerva admits.

You seem to have a handle on your chances - so in that case, best of luck to you.

Your extracurricular activities do not need to have anything to do with your intended major. It is for example perfectly okay if your extracurricular activities involve running or soccer or tutoring kids or looking after a younger sibling or nearly anything else and you want to be a math major.

And yes Williams College is very good for mathematics.

Colleges and universities in the US will interpret your GPA in the context of your high school and your education system. What 3.7 means in your high school might be very different from what it means in the public high school in the town where I live. Here a 3.7 would probably not put a student in the top 10%, but in some other countries or some other high school it might make you the top student in your high school. Williams College and other schools in the US will know how to interpret your GPA. Most of us here on this web site will not know how to interpret your GPA since you are an international student from a country that we are not all that familiar with.

Since you need 100% financial aid, any university in the US should be considered a reach. You should apply to schools that you feel are a good fit for you, and that meet 100% of need for international students.

You might want to do a number of Google searches and determine which of the schools on your list meet 100% of need for international students. You also might want to do more Google searches and see what you can find out about the computer science and math programs at each of the schools that you are considering.
