*Additional comment section: Mentions that despite low GPA (3.25), highest improvement in entire class. Freshman year had a 1.2 GPA, took AP’s for the first time junior year and scored 4s, 5’s, on 2/3 of AP classes, had a 4.2 GPA first semester of senior year. Asserts that consistent improvement exemplifies UC values in a way that compensates for GPA.
Schools
Match: UCSC
Reach: UCI, UCLA, UC Davis, UCSB, SDSU
**Note: Already accepted to CSUF, Cal Poly Pomona, CSUSM, CSUMB, SFSU. Rejected from CSULB. Waiting for SDSU and UC’s.
Also-- in terms of cost, my parents have generously offered to cover my tuition + room/board, which I am immensely grateful for. I am in state as well. Cost does not affect my reach/target/safety status.
Congratulations on your acceptances so far and for working so hard to recover from Freshman year.
Since SDSU admits mainly on stats, I would say SDSU is going to be a tough admit. Average admitted CSU GPA for 2023 was 4.04.
For the UC’s, your academic improvement will definitely help your chances unfortunately, it is difficult to predict how your overall application will be considered since each campus will weight the 13 areas of criteria differently.
Below is the admit rates based on the Capped weighted UC GPA and not major specific. I believe you have better chances than the %’s listed but I do not work in admissions so I cannot tell how much more. Your PIQ’s will help your chances at the UC’s.

I will also list some admit rate data based on your major, Sociology if available. Statistics do not tell the whole story but since no one here on CC can see your whole application, the data does give you at least some idea of your chances.
UCSB: Does not admit by major into the College of Letters and Sciences. Admit for the College was 32% with a middle 50th percentile Capped weighted UC GPA of 4.23-4.29
UCD: College of Letters and Sciences admit rate was around 38% with a UC Capped weighted GPA of 4.03-4.27 (25th-75th percentile) overall for the campus.
UCI: Admit rate for Sociology was 26.1% with an overall UC Capped weighted GPA of 4.07-4.28 (25th-75th percentile).
UCLA: Does not admit by major into the College of Letter and Sciences with an admit rate of 11% and a 4.20-4.31 Capped weighted UC GPA (25th-74th percentile).
You have some good school options already so any other admits would be icing on the cake. Good luck.
No, it is the acceptance rate by GPA range. So 14% of applicants who had above a 4.0 were accepted, only 1% with 3.7 - 3.9 were accepted, below that no acceptances.
The chart just shows that if you have a Capped weighted UC GPA of 4.00 or higher, your overall chance of being admitted with that GPA is 14%. So basically, under a 4.0 has a low chance but GPA alone is not evaluated within a vacuum.
This is only statistical data and does not take into account all the non-academic criteria that the UC’s take into account during their application review such as EC’s and PIQ’s.
Based on the chart, UCSC is 12% acceptance rate for your UC GPA. Not a match for sure. Maybe you should look into OOS, since you can submit SAT score (1410) and a LOR with a good come back story from low GPA in freshman year.
Thanks so much! I see you in all the forum posts helping others, please know I and others greatly appreciate it. Haven’t heard back today so I am waiting for second wave to find out from UCSC and other UC’s.
How do you feel about the CSU’s you’ve gotten into so far? Which one would you choose, of your current acceptances?
It’s possible that you might get into some of the schools you’re still waiting for, but it’s probably more likely that you’ve seen where the limit is, competitiveness-wise, with the Long Beach decision. You have some good options, though.
If you’re unhappy with your current choices and really want to have a more flagship-university type option, you might think about adding an application or two, to schools in neighboring states with WUE reciprocity, that are still taking applications. U of Nevada Reno, U of New Mexico, U of Utah - these would all be possibilities. They consider test scores, too. But there’s definitely nothing wrong with the schools that have already accepted you! What’s your favorite?
