Applied to reaches for a lot of different majors, changed my mind a lot thorughout process.

Really appreciate advice and chances at Harvard and CMU/NW as I got deffered and have legacy and applied for music programs very specific to what I have been doing with my extracurriluars for the later. Dream schools are Harvard & CMU. Thanks in advance.

Others can help you better if you specify:

  • Unweighted GPA (every weighted GPA can have different weighting, so others outside your school do not know what yours means).
  • What major you applied to for each school.
  • My school doesn’t have unweighted GPA unfortunately
  • CMU (Environmental/civil eng and electronic music)
  • NEU (CompEng)
  • NYU Tandon (CompEng)
  • Harvard (Philosophy, Music)
  • UMich (CompEng)
  • Vandy (CompEng)
  • Cornell (Philosophy, Music)
  • Yale (Music, Chemistry, Biochem)
  • NW (Music BA)
  • USC (Civil Eng)
  • Rowan & Hood (Judaic studies)

Congratulations on your acceptances. At this point, it’s a wait and see on your pending applications. Except for Rowan and Hood, the rest are reaches so just wait and see.

If you think you might want to study engineering, you should probably go to a school where you are admitted for engineering. Of your possible majors, that is the most selective one at most places, and it may not be offered at all these schools. And transferring out of engineering into another major is generally easier than transferring in to engineering (varies by school).

You should be able to calculate an unweighted GPA from your grades.

When you say your medical condition caused your grades to drop, by how much do you mean? It’s impossible to tell by your weighted GPA. Do you have almost all As, As and Bs, more Bs than As…?

Your SATs are on the low side for CMU engineering. If your grades are a mixed bag, that’s going to be a really tough admit. Schools care first and foremost about academics. For most applicants (outside of Olympic medalists/famous actors/etc.), their academics will have to clear a school’s bar before ECs can set someone apart.

Harvard might give more leeway for an interesting activity, but CMU will be hard core about showing academic strength.

You have some nice acceptances. Anything is possible at this point — hold tight and ride it out!

Seems like strong grades and middle 50% SAT even at CMU. With those unique ECs, I think you have as good a chance as any. It’s probably better to be going in Eng plus music because arts at a school like CMU might be as hard or harder to get into.

But, no one really knows. Anyone on CC will tell you that acceptance to the top 20 schools is extremely difficult and cannot be counted on by grades or scores. They could accept five or 10 times as many students as they do and have top caliber classes, but they only accept 5 to 10% total, less in some desirable majors.

I know someone with similar stats to you who did not get it to any Ivy but ended up at CMU and we know people didn’t get into any of those schools at all.

So, just be mentally prepared to go to a targetschool and if you into your dream school that’s great
