If a scholarship is necessary for affordability, indicate that you are aiming for a scholarship and use the scholarship chance to estimate it into the appropriate group below; also, for colleges that admit by major or division, consider that in the chance estimate.

UT Austin is a public university which does not give need-based financial aid to out of state applicants. Are you hoping for a merit scholarship?

UT is a reach. For chances, admission to McCombs out of state would be low probability, setting aside the fact that it is unlikely to be affordable for you.

Look closely at the other public universities on your list to see what types of merit scholarships they offer to out of state students, because they may not offer any need-based aid. Penn State is not known for its affordability even in-state; not sure about merit. Texas A&M and Indiana U are also public universities.

UT Austin student body is less than 10% OOS/International. Getting into any of the UT schools OOS is pretty challenging. Your school grades/SAT are in the ballpark of their student body but I’d still call it a crap shoot.

The bigger issue is going to be cost. Most State schools do not commit to meeting financial need. With your $15-$20K budget, even if there’s an acceptance to UT, it’s likely to be unaffordable. That statement is likely to hold true at Indiana, A&M & Penn State as well.

As a prospective Finance major I’m curious what’s attracting you to these specific schools? You might do better at any number of private schools. While the pre-aid tuition cost might be much higher, there will be many scholarships available to someone with your grades - likely getting the net cost down well be low some of the State options.

Hmmmm. Heck no. You can’ barely get the room and board for that budget.

You built your list entirely backward. You start with a budget and pick schools to fit.

Your entire list is not within budget. You built inverse - you picked schools that are too costly. And the costs aren’t even close to your budget. They are multiples of your budget.

What will be are Florida schools with bright futures, Alabama, Ole Miss, Miss State etc. UAH for smaller.

You have a UGA and Penn State. For all intents and purposes, the big Florida publics and Alabama are the same thing.

Good luck.

None of the out-of-state public universities on this list are going to meet your number.

Always run the net price calculator for any school before adding it to the list.

What are the fit requirements behind this list? I don’t see signs of thinking or reflection on the type of setting, location or program that would suit this student. Has the student done any campus visits?

In my opinion none of these schools will be affordable. I agree that you need to start with a budget and pick schools that fit.

No physics?

The cost constraint means that the student needs a large merit scholarship, not just admission. This is either a very high reach or out of reach for a non-Texas resident at UT Austin.

Texas public universities place a very high importance on class rank.

I’m not sure any of these will come in at a $20,000 a year budget.

But your Florida schools do have that potential when you include Bright Futures. Are any of the Florida publics under consideration?

Would you like suggestions for colleges that will likely be more affordable?

Congratulations :tada: that’s an impressive record.
Is the 15-20k budget based on being a middle income family (75-125k for instance) or is it a set budget hoping for merit while you don’t qualify for much or any financial aid?

Fordham only makes ~ budget if your child is a NMSF and s/he gets a full tuition scholarship.

As posters have mentioned, alas, the public universities on your list won’t come within budget. Your child will likely get in but the bill would be in the 40-60k range everywhere.

If you have a low SAI, many “meet need” private colleges will be interested and affordable.

However, if you need merit to cover full tuition or maybe even more, you can look into some universities already listed
Or for instance

If that budget is a bit flexible, look into universities that may have a Flagship match (you don’t pay more tuition than for the flagship) Oglethorpe in Atlanta, Hendrix near Little Rock… you can also see if UMaine’s deal applies to Florida. It’d still cost more than 15-20k though.

I’m from Texas. UT-Austin reserves 90% of their admissions to Texas residents, which means he has a chance of 10% or less just to get in. The business school is even more competitive. And that’s assuming you’re paying for nonresident tuition, which will be well over 50k a year with room and board and no financial aid. I would just stick to FL, which has some of the lowest tuition in the country.
