Ohio State, Penn State, Minnesota, and NC State all have secondary admission to the CS(E) major, so you may want to check how difficult the secondary admission criteria are and whether it is automatic with a stated college GPA or is competitive (and whether by grades/GPA only or also considers essays etc.).

Sure. Ohio St seems easiest as only Pre-CSE and Pre-CIS majors are allowed to apply to CSE. If direct admission is desired, then Purdue, UMass and Santa Clara fit the bill.

Wow. That’s a lot

Will the student get to visit the top contenders ?

Congrats on the latest acceptances! Wisconsin, Northeastern, Maryland, UIUC, and RPI are all awesome options!

Yes. That is too many target schools. S25 plans to withdraw from all targets and keep in-state santa clara and ohio state.
Among the 4 midwest schools(uiuc, uw-madison, umd, purdue), we cannot visit all and he needs to somehow eliminate 2. might use major and/or ability to dual major as a factor as they are all within budget.

UIUC and Purdue are only 1.5 hours drive apart. Wisconsin is about 3 1/2-4 hours drive from either of those, so it’s feasible to do all three in a single trip. Maryland isn’t Midwest so that would be a solo visit there.

If u can visit UIUC and Purdue - close to one another, you may be able to sneak in Wisconsin too. It’s not too far if Chicago were a starting/ending point. Other than large publics, their environments are different. My son loved one, hated the other on Purdue / UIUC so yiu do want to validate if possible so the student is comfortable day after day.

Just reading - I just said same - or could batch with Ohio State. It’s long. But an easy drive. If finished one school at 2 or 3p, could easily hit the other the next day.

Such great choices.

Congratulation for all the great admittance. Did your son get any merit money from Ohio State? Seems odd that he got honors without merit. You may want to double check. S24 got rejected by some of the colleges accepted your son, but he got acceptance from Ohio State Eng school with $14.5K merit/year. Good Luck.

Thanks. Will check if merit is announced at the time of admission or later. Honors came in a separate email.

Yes
It’s right outside DC.

For the CS+X admissions, what X is the student intending to study?

Would it be correct that the net prices for the admissions are:

School List FA/Scholarship Net
Arizona State $59.5k $17.5k $42k
Santa Clara $85.6k $30.6k $55k
Ohio State $59.5k $59.5k
Penn State $56k $56k
RPI $87.7k $40k $47.7k
Minnesota $57k $15k $42k
Colorado $66k $66k
NC State $53k $53k
UIUC $65.6k $65.6k
Maryland $61k $61k
Purdue $47k $47k
Wisconsin $61k $61k
Massachusetts $61.7k $61.7k
Northeastern $85-90k $85-90k

Great table but I’d use just tuition, fees, room and board as the schools are all variable on the extras.

Yes. Very helpful table.

But I usually remove the personal, books and travel costs for comparison. Removing the travel cost is questionable, but my S22 spends hardly much on books and personal costs would be same unless he lives in NYC or some expensive city.

However, for financial planning purposes, it would be better to add your own estimated travel, books, and misc costs to the billed costs, because leaving them out would give too optimistic an estimate for financial planning purposes.

CS+X, X= Econ or Statistics

Northeastern is out of the picture for a couple of reasons:

  1. S25 is reluctant to spend a year abroad in London.
  2. Given his AP and DE credits the course selection is limited delaying graduation and the cost higher. Global & London Scholars Program Curriculum - Global Scholars

UIUC CS+X allows economics to be the X, but not statistics. Its statistics & CS major is separate from CS+X.

You may want to investigate whether switching from CS+X to statistics & CS is difficult.

Makes perfect sense – especially with the many other excellent options.
