Pretty good essays, I guess I can pm ppl my common app essay if they want to read it to judge my chances.

Good recs I am sure

Asked for Financial Aid

MIT
Caltech
Princeton
Stanford
Harvard
Yale
Cornell

Chances?

MIT - reach
Caltech - reach
Princeton - reach
Stanford - reach
Harvard - reach
Yale - reach
Cornell - match/slight reach

looks fairly solid. decent scores. good rank. decent ecs. Your amc score is pretty low which makes me doubt how competitive the math scene in alberta is. I’m also fairly sure alberta is a fairly deserted province so… yeah

You’ll make it to cornell probably and maybe one of the others. That’s my guess.

Can I see your common app? I’m done applying. Just feel like reading to compare with my own.

apply to some safeties lol

lollll Alberta is not a deserted province…it’s got two major cities and a bunch of medium-size ones, plus some uber-popular vacation destinations!

Banff FTW!

oh yeah. im an IB Diploma candidate

Sanofi-Aventis Biotech Research - Research Team Leader, is this something u started on ur own, outside of school? if so that sa great exc : ). Look your stats are great, gpa sat and exc but doode, ur applying to the cream of the crop for schools. There are ppl with ur gpa and 2400’s (few of my friends had 4.0 and 2400’s and got rejected by cal tech and MIT).

MIT-reach
Caltech-reach
Princeton-reach
Stanford-reach
Harvard-reach
Yale-reach
Cornell-match

(a big reason, intl needing financial aid=death.)

thanks for all your replies

karan,
if i don’t get into any, I am planning to go to U of Toronto.

flong,
i thought MIT, Harvard, Princeton, and Yale were needblind to internationals :frowning:
isn’t that true?

International applicants are usually held to a much higher standard than domestic students. This is especially the case with international applicants who also need financial assisstance.

As an engineer however, race and gender will play a major role in admissions, would you mind providing this information?

yeah they are need blind. harvard atleast sent me a letter (m an international) saying they were need blind.

MIT is need blind for all students (including international students), so the amount of money you need (or even the fact that you need money) will not affect your admission.

That being said, there is a quota on admissions for international students, currently at about 5% of all international applications. This means that it’s more than twice as competitive for international students.

Best wishes on your application. :)

thanks for your replies

so you guys don’t think I can make it into any of the colleges except Cornell? :frowning:
I guess I have to count on my common app essay…

no. we kind of don’t.

I’m guessing in the end. You will get into Cornell, 1 of teh others, and wailtist/reject at the rest. gluck anyway.

yah Harvard, princeton, yale, cornell and MIT are need-blind for Canadians so it wont affect your admission decision. As for Stanford, they aren’t - which sucks. And I dont know about CalTech.

Coolness_rookie - your plans are like the exact same as mine. I am also Canadian (from BC though) and I applied to the same schools you did - minus Caltech - and my fallbak school is U of T. Crazy

you beat the avearges at most of those schools, you got great EC too. I don’t see any reason why you can’t get in more than half of those you listed.

thank you all for your replies =)

anth_03,
haha that’s awesome. yeah I think a lot of Canadians plan to fall back on U of T if all fails (that’s what my friends are doing too :P). But hopefully, we’ll get in somewhere =)

chaoses,
getting into half of the schools i listed would be a dream-come-true…lol
But I think I have come to realize that colleges don’t define my life, so I am not gonna kill myself if I get rejected by all. haha =P I think that’s a healthy mindset to have =)

anyways. more comments/predictions would be appreciated.

that’s a good mindset to have. expect that the worst can happen, but hope for the best! i was seriously thinking of suiciding and calculating ways and results of it and all when i couldn’t get into JH, but then I realized that’s really stupid. Girls in this world need me, so I stopped lol. Second choice is great too!

In my essays, I tried to show different sides of me. For my common app essay, I talked about my feelings in classes, while dancing for a talent show, and in a basketball game. People thought this was my best essay.

In supplementary essays, I talked about my emotion when my friend who used to stay at our house went back to Korea.

I know that my EC’s aren’t very impressive, so I’m hoping my essays will help me. =P

Oh yeah. also in the additional information part, I explained what I do for each activity rather than listing all other activities I do.

I heard that harvard does not have quotas for internationals. is that true?

some more relatively major things that I forgot to mention.

1) I’ve been tutoring for last three years, about 5 hours per week.
2) in the summer, I participated in a provincial biomedical research program for 6 weeks (40 hrs/week)
