My top choice school says that in their class of 2017, only ~18% of students came from the Southern states. Does this give me an advantage or a disadvantage? I would think that Virginia is a southern state (it’s classified by the Collegeboard as one,) although many people say Mid-Atlantic.

So what if 18% came from southern states? What if only like 5% of the applicants were from the South? Then that actually gives you a statistical advantage. Point is, you can’t make judgments about anything based only on the percent of the total student body. And I don’t think you being from the South will put you at a disadvantage, no matter what college. It’s not like schools have higher standards for Southern students.

Is your top choice school a public or a private school?

It’s a private school
