UVa is one of my top schools (along with UMich, Georgetown, and Notre Dame) and I want to know how much of a realistic chance I have at getting into McIntire. Does my being a 1st generation high school grad. and college student help?

They are going to look at what you did once in UVA for McIntire (you apply after sophomore year).

As far as getting into UVA, do you know anyone from your area who has been admitted? You may be able to compare your stats to them.

Most people from my school matriculate to in-state schools or Illinois schools. So I don’t have much fodder for comparison.

McIntire’s application will not consider any stats from high school at all. So it really depends how well you do when you get here.

You apply to McIntire during your second year, so you’d initially apply to the college of arts and sciences. And you don’t have a very good shot of getting in.

Haha so is UVa a huge reach for me? What can I do to improve my chances?

UVA is a fantastically huge reach for you. If I were you I’d shoot for UW.

Wow. Are you saying this because of my rank or what?

write great essays, and UVa will be a reach/match for you. Getting in out of state is nearly impossible

You need to get your rank up to the top 5% or better, have awesome test scores across the board, write essays that will “WOW” people, and have really flattering recommendations.

A big problem is that you said that you don’t have any HS graduates that go the UVA. The few OOS people that I heard that statement from and still get admitted here are valedictorians that do charity work and still be captains of two or more varsity teams.

UVA is a huge reach for you.

Is it really that bad? I think adcoms will look at his stats and give him some extra consideration as he’s a first generation HIGH school grad ya know. I’ll need to know your SAT’s in order to give you a guess, but personally I don’t think it’s reaching for the stars.

Yeah and remember that although it’s harder to get in OOS, UVA still needs some geographic diversity. He’s pretty far away from us. I have no idea how many people apply from there or what the application pool is like (which is why I asked if he knows anyone recently who’s gone there), but I’m willing to bet it isn’t like the MD/PA—>Va pools. I honestly don’t know specific numbers or anything, but my general observation is that most of UVA’s applicants seem to come from coast states or the surrounding south/middle south. Also some parts of the northeast which are very competitive. While I still think that at any rate UVA is a reach for the OP, we probably can’t judge his application in terms of the applicant pools most of us are probably familiar with. He’s going to need to find stats for UVA admits from Wisconsin. The class rank is a big problem right now. You need to do whatever you can to raise it as high as you can. Also since you have an A average, if you have a lot of APs and the rank is artificially low because it’s a school where people play games like no music classes, etc, to push their rank up, that need to be communicated in the counselor recommendation and you need to start planning ahead to get really good teacher recs.

UVa, from what I hear, still takes 1/3 from OOS. Just wondering how someone ranked # 15 of 575, GPA of 4.6 (W) and Sat of 2140, Mostly AP/Honor classes, editor of school paper, member of JSA and NHS and varsity tennis would do ? UVa is a fine school…

I think he will be in… I know several of my friends who got in with 1100-1200 (2 parts) SAT…

rence likely won’t get in.

mbj, the person u described has a very good chance.

i have a similar question (brief stats), (took sat’s today) expected over 2000, 3.88 unweighted all honors classes, 2 languages (3 yrs each), 5 ap’s, VP of class 4 years, 12 seasons of track/xc, 9 years of cello, 7 years of trombone, NHS

never mind im just going to make a new thread, it wont let me delete that post…

rence:
I have no idea whether or not you will get in, but I can show you my information so you can reconcile. I am also from Wisconsin, with no family or high school ties to UVA.

4.1 weighted GPA
