Chances for some Tech schools and LACs with engineering...

Hi, I am a high school senior. I am applying RD to SUNY Binghamton University, Clarkson University, Lafayette College, Northeastern University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Union College, Villanova University. So, a few top tech schools, a few LACs, and a few big universities. All of these schools have great engineering programs. It has taken me a lot of time to narrow my choices down to seven schools (a lot of visits and hours reading Princeton Review). I want to major in electrical engineering and if possible, concentrate in signal processing because I love music and I would love to design audio equipment. Here are my stats:

GPA: 97.3 UW
Rank: 6/457

SAT I: 690 Math, 640 Critical Reading, 650 Writing, 1980 Total
SAT II Biology E: 750

EC: Varsity Bowling all four years, Vice President of Students for Improving Healthcare, NHS member, member of a small Youth Ministry at my church that plans church events, 6th grade catechist at my church, playing music with mentally retarted adults at New Visions of Albany

Awards: Clarkson Achievement Award, Board of Education award all three years (95+ average)

Hobbies: I play bass in a band, we have played at several school events and we play regularly at coffee shops around town.

Job: I work during the summer and during school vacations at New Visions of Albany, where I work in a workshop alongside mentally ■■■■■■■■ adults.

Recommendations: I know they will be great, the main one is from my honors precalc teacher and I did very well in that class and knew him well.

Essays: Great, edited by my AP Lit teacher, common app essay about combining my love of music and math/science by modifying my bass guitars and building speaker cabinets, effects pedals, etc.

Thanks!

bump… will chance back

I dont know anything about those schools, but have you considered GA tech? I think you have a pretty good chance of getting in there.

I have a thread. would you chance me on there?

I haven’t considered GA tech because I live in Albany, NY and I don’t want to be over 4 hours away.

after school bump…

before bed bump…

I just got my ACT score. It is a 30 composite with 33 english, 31 math, 29 reading, and 25 science (I know… really awful score, I ran out of time and I can never seem to do well on that section). According to my college book, a 30 ACT is equivalent to a 1980 SAT score. Which would be the better score to submit or should I just submit both?

bump…

The ones I know most about are Villanova (a family member went there) and Lafayette. I believe you will be accepted to both. Your SAT scores are in the middle 50% for both of these schools and your class rank is outstanding.

You will easily be accepted to Northeastern and Binghamton.

Thanks for the opinion! I am trying to maintain that rank despite a very tough schedule.

any more opinions?

clarkson should be an admit

Thanks, I am counting on Clarkson as my safety at this point.

my son is not applying for a few years but i think he will be looking at teh same schools. i am hoping for the best for you!

Your record looks like a match for Lafayette College to me. FYI, Lafayette has an excellent music department for a small LAC. Also, has recently been awarded excellence in teaching engineering for women. Good luck to you and all the best!

Thanks! After attending an open house yesterday, Lafayette College is my top choice.

bump…

SUNY Binghamton University - In
Clarkson University - Not sure
Lafayette College - High match
Northeastern University - Match
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute - High match
Union College - Not sure
Villanova University - Not sure

Sorry I couldn’t do more for you. We are applying to a lot of the same schools (as pointed out before; perhaps I will see you at Lafayette, Binghamton, or RPI heh)…anyway, best of luck!

Glad you enjoyed open house in Easton. RD applicants can roll over their applications to ED at a pretty late date. This is a unique feature to Lafayette admissions, it is on the website and your GC at school will know about it as well. Good luck to both of you!

familykCT - thanks for the opinion. I was aware of the unusual ED date. I was thinking about ED, but it’s too much of a commitment for me. Lafayette is certainly one of my top choices, but I don’t have a single top choice.
