I’m Cherokee, I’m an average student, I’m going for an advanced studies diploma, taking all the classes that my guidence counsoler tells me. I’m a Latin Student, I’m involved in Track, and football, I’m a very weak math student, what are my chances? also if I do bad on the SAT, what are my chances aswell as doing good?

Can you provide a bit more information? Are you instate or out of state? If instate, what area are you from? Will you be a recruited athlete? Are you an average student by College Confidential standards (i.e., pretty strong), or by national standards?

I think W & M will be interested in your URM status (there are 35 Native American students currently enrolled - .5 percent of the student population). They’ll also like the fact that you’re a guy (I’m presuming, because of the football
).

W & M likes students with very good GPAs and SAT scores. Here’s a link to the common data set:
http://www.wm.edu/ir/part_a.htm
It shows that the average SAT for enrolled freshmen in 2005-2006 was 1344. 25th/75th percentiles were 630/730 Verbal, and 630/710 Math.

I suggest spending a lot of time on the application, and definitely writing the supplemental essay. Good luck!

I’m instate, I live in Atkins, Virginia (South west VA) I’m not sure if Ill be recruited as an athlete, I hope so. but what I mean by Average student is Average by High school standards. and yes you are correct in your presumption, I’m male. I dont know what my GPA currently is, probabbly is Average of High school students. I have heard that the SAT is about 50% math, and that worries me, as I have always been a very weak math student, math has never came easily to me as the rest. and in W&M I want to take ROTC, but I figure what course’s I wish to take, maybe you guys could suggest some good course’s. anyway, what do you think my chances are in getting accepted in W&M?

what year are you in high school?

I’m a sophomore for the next couple of months, then I’ll finally be a Junior.

Your junior year is typically most important. Being Cherokee will help but it’s not an instant acceptance. I don’t know how your high school weights GPA so I will just say that you should have mostly A’s with few B’s, all higher level courses (AP, IB, or honors if the other two are not available) and an SAT score of 1280+ if you’re in-state and 1350+ out of state. Those numbers are only that low because you are Cherokee which will help the college increase diversity.

You said a few times that your grades are average by high school standards- does this mean predominantly C’s? On a 4.0 scale, a C is only worth 2.0 for an unweighted class and 3.0 for a weighted class. Many people who are accepted to William and Mary have very high weighted GPA. My friend, in-state, was accepted early decision to William and Mary with an unweighted 4.0 GPA and a weighted 4.5 GPA. What grades have you gotten so far in high school (freshman year and first semester sophomore year)?

umm, freshman year, mainly B’s and C’s, maybe a D or so, and an A…I think, this year, B’s C’s D’s and like two A’s, Im taking humanities for this upcomming school year, its an honors class, I will be getting an Advanced Studies diploma, ummm…what are the best class choices to look great on my College Application. Im open to all advice, I want to get into this school, its my dream.

you should take AP or IB courses in your strongest subjects if your school offers them.

if your school doesn’t have that stuff, you should try as hard as you can to get very few C’s, and definitely no D’s. The advanced studies diploma will not help you at all. You cannot get D’s, so try to do anything you can to bring those up.

we have AP, I dont know what IB is, and we have Dual Credit courses, which I have been told that colleges smile on more than AP. I will be taking weighted courses next year to help my GPA. my GPA is 2.3 right now.

The College of William and Mary is a very academically challenging university (yes, it is a university) so if you cannot achieve A’s and B’s in weighted courses at your school then W&M may not be the best school for you.

but WM has always been a dream of mine to attend, next year I’m thinking of taking the seven following classes.
1.English 11 Honors
2.Geometry
3.Earth Science 2
4.Latin 3
5.Humanities Honors
6.AP US History
7.Strength and Conditioning

and I will be playing two different sports in the same season, so Ill be going from Football practice to Cross Country practice, directly from it to cross country practice. and Ill might do Basketball and Wrestling at the same time aswell. maybe be a little like my hero Jim Thorpe.

For a junior that schedule does not look very impressive. You should really take a science other than Earth Science 2 and you should try to take Geometry over the summer and get into Algebra 2 with Trig for your junior year.

I dont know if I can do Chem, in the place of Earth Science 2, but Ill see what I can do. I think I will take Geometry this summer, but it’s gonna cost me $100 for that class.

so how is this schedule?
1.English 11 Honors
2.Algebra 2
3.Chemistry
4.Latin 3
5.Humanities Honors
6.AP US History
7.Strength and Conditioning

This is the schedule for junior and senior year of my friend who has already been accepted:

11th Grade
AP U.S. History
AP Environmental Science
Pre-Calculus
Honors English 11 (only AP 12 is offered at my school)
Honors Theater II
Honors Show Choir
Spanish IV
Men’s Chorus

12th Grade
AP Biology
AP Calculus
AP English 12
AP Government
Honors Spanish IV
Honors Theater III
Honors Show Choir
Honors Men’s Chorus

His schedule is a actually less strenuous than a few of my friends who were accepted early decision into U.Va., but his plethora of activities and great optional submission helped.

This is a very strong junior year that would help to balance your freshman and sophomore year:

AP Calculus
AP Physics
AP U.S. History
AP English 11
AP Psychology
Honors Humanities
Strength and Conditioning

You probably cannot and should not take AP Calculus because you are too many years behind. I know a lot of schools choose different math cycles but Geometry as a junior is not going to look good. The SAT requires knowledge of Geometry and Algebra II. Forget about the cost and just take it over the summer. Also look into the 2 year IB Program if your school offers it. I tutor at my school and it seems the culprit for grades lower than a B in any class (exceptions may be math and physics) are due to a lack of focus and dedication. You need to take the hard classes and work to achieve high marks or you may not be accepted into William & Mary. The purpose of having high grades in higher-level classes is not to torture you. They prepare you for academic life in college.

Here is a list of courses at this site - http://www.scsb.org/prostudies.htm
can you compile a good schedule for me, but keep latin 3 in it.

so would the following be great schedule’s for junior year, and Senior year?

Junior year schedule:
English 11 Honors
AP US History
Algebra 2
Dual Credit Physical/Historical Geology
Latin 3
Strength and Conditioning
Humanities Honors

Senior Year:
AP Government
Pre Calculus
AP English
AP Physics
AP Bio
Strength and Conditioning
Spanish

I think the junior year schedule is still weak but it will help you work your way into the higher level classes. You need to take the classes seriously both years and strive for straight A’s. I think you should consider taking AP Latin in your senior year instead of randomly stopping to take Spanish.

I dont know if my latin Skills will be good enough for AP Latin 4, but I guess Ill try. but that is the strongest 11th year schedule, that I believe I can qualify for.

I think the Chemistry looks better than the Dual Credit Physical/Historical Geology… even better would be an Honors or AP Chemistry if offered at your school…

Yeah that’s true. Chemistry is a must.
