@Hamurtle I guess that’s the truth in disguise
One thing that you can do that would ultimately help you when you complete your college applications is to improve your writing skills. It is difficult to follow your thought process in your posts, partially due to your vocabulary choices, limited punctuation, and grammatical errors. I encourage you to have a native English speaker proofread all of your application essays before sending them in when you do apply.
Meanwhile continue to work on the things that are in your control. Continue to get good grades, take the required standardized tests for the schools you wish to apply to (SAT, SAT subject tests, TOEFL, etc.) Continue to participate in ECs, your job, etc.
Lastly, research the schools that you wish to apply to…understand what qualities they look for in successful applicants, read their online blogs/FAQs as well as the school specific threads on these CC boards. Good luck.
Ok as this dissussion has almost come to an end according to @Hamurtle sir just tell me why I can’t get into MIT/Stanford
so the negatives will be indirect positives as I will work upon them
Stanford is not Need Blind for international applicants. That can affect admit chances further.
“Still what 1 thing Could I do” You can research this in what the target colleges say and show. Asking us is not enough. To get into S or MIT, you need to be S or MIT, think like them, have the drives they like- which includes the drive to understand what they look for.
Baffles me that MIT aspirants don’t find the superb MIT admission blogs. Their info reflects what many US tippy tops look for.
Don’t give up so easily. Don’t get your feet stuck in the mud. Tippy tops like to see the right energies. If you go back and read, we can later help you interpret. None of this is easy. But there’s a major difference in kids who can take advice and go for it, versus those who want to lean back and just ask for orhers’ answers. This latter is trouble for any tippy top.
Think about it.
It is nice to have big goals, such as becoming like Sundar Pachai. However, I’m not sure how much you understand about business in the US if you think that only two elite colleges can get a person to that level of success, not to mention what level of success is even necessary for a nice standard of living in the US compared to what you experience now.
This is just a guess, but it sounds like you would benefit from a broader perspective (which is not unusual for a teenager anywhere in the world). Very successful people do not take a narrow, closed view.
@Hamturte’s advice is not in disguise. It is explicit. Apply to Stanford and MIT, but considering the low odds with those two, focus your attention on other colleges far beyond them. Add others to your list that offer financial aid and/or substantial merit to internationals.
This may not be helpful, but it is one of my favorites from the MIT admission blog:
https://mitadmissions.org/blogs/entry/applying_sideways/
@evergreen5 which collages ? as when I was kid maybe 12 I dreamt of studying at MIT being the next Zuckerberg but things are shattering now
What’s more awful that this — getting accepted by your dream school but getting no for financial aid
Guys can I work and earn money to pay my expenses ?
Any FA you get will likely come with a work study component requiring an on-campus job. Opportunities for off-campus jobs are limited. But any money you make will be a drop in the bucket.
Some schools will just reject you if they know you can’t pay.
At last @skieurope sir do you think I will be accepted by MIT/Stanford if I don’t take Financial Aids ?
Not 70k/year, to pay tuition and room/board. And your visa likely won’t allow work off campus.
Please take a breath and go research. Become informed. If you get an admit, you’d get some aid. But right now, you aren’t doing this. With 40,000+ apps, they quickly eliminate those who don’t match, don’t understand, can’t provide a strong app and supp, and more. No one should go into this blind folded, so unaware.
So stop now and read the MIT blogs. Then more. Or you’re limiting your own chance.
My last and open question to all
Do you guys think that I can get into MIT/Stanford with all my above achievements ?
just have a look the are in thread and no worries I learnt a lesson today that Only rich people can study in these biggies. And will tell my friends and relatives to study for JEE. Still answer above question so I don’t break the hopes of my Indian Rich friends
thank you for giving for precious time
It’s not in the thread because it was deleted. The site is called College Confidential; I doubt that the profess wants his name put out there in this manner.
No, I don’t think you have.
That should not be your takeaway, particularly since it’s not accurate.
Again, these 2 will reject 98%+ of the applicants applying from India. Whether you are the 2% that intrigues these schools is something nobody outside of an admissions office can say.
what do you mean @skieurope sir
Please don’t convince me you truly don’t understand. Its NOT only the rich.
It IS the wise.
Right now, you aren’t showing us you’re wise. Send an application without understanding and the chances are next to nil. We only know a little about you, but other Indian applicants will show that and more.
Your choice. Sorry. But I keep waiting for you to take on this extra step. Short time frame on this thread. But show us you get it, aren’t just dreaming. No one gets in on dreams. Too much competition.
Writing a book about yourself isn’t even the point of the essay. Winning something, running a YouTube channel, telling them you co hi le help them win ACM ICPC are not it. Nor is telling them how you “want” to help other Indian students get to college, if you aren’t involved now, out there making a difference.
Lots to learn.
I don’t think you are understanding. It’s correct that for need-aware schools, admission will be especially difficult, but even for those who can afford to pay - and even for domestic students - the odds of admission to Stanford are incredibly low. While rates change a little every year, Stanford often has the lowest acceptance rate in the US.
You should google lists of schools that offer financial aid to international students. Some are need-blind, some are not. You can also google lists of schools that offer merit scholarships to internationals. Understand the difference between need-based financial aid and merit-based scholarships, as they are two different things.
You can find admission stats, including acceptance rates and the middle 50 percentiles for scores and grades, on the website of each college. Data for admitted or enrolled students can often be found in the class profile in the admission section and data for enrolled students (which is lower than for admitted) can be found in the Common Data Set in the institutional research section or at NCES https://nces.ed.gov/collegenavigator/. There may also be data on acceptance rate for internationals, but I’m not sure where it is located - google a bit to see what you can find.
The higher your stats compared to the admission stats for the college, the better your chances, but that is only a starting point, as admission is holistic. That is, admission considers additional factors.
Hopefully understanding that this information is out there will help you as you begin your search. Much of what you seek is on the internet somewhere (e.g. where do top tech companies hire? where do graduates of a particular college go to work?).
I wished if god invented a restart button for humans …. I wanna start my life again
My 2 bucks won’t get waisted, Thanks to chemists copper sulphate was invented I will start my life again
Look, nobody knows if your gonna get into to MIT or Stanford. You probably won’t either, as a lot of people have the exact same stats and ECs as you do. Think about your future in the long run, and plan wisely.
You think you can win at least a silver medal in 12th grade? That is too confident. Regardless your IOI activity effect does not waste.
