Chances please.....Really Confused

<p>Hi all,</p>

<p>I am an International student, currently studying 12th Grade in a school which follows Indian curriculum CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education).</p>

<p>I just wanted to know what my chances are in getting admission for Aerospace Engineering.</p>

<p>I don’t have GPA grading in my school. The grading is purely based on marks obtained:
9th - 85% (maths-A, science-A, social studies-A, English-B, Hindi-B)
10th - 90% (maths-A, science-A, social studies-A, English-A, Hindi-B)
11th – 72%(maths-C, physics-A, chemistry-B, computer science-A, English-A)</p>

<p>My school does not rank but the counselor had marked me as a student in the top 10% and that i followed the most rigorous courseload offered by the school.</p>

<p>I had also received a scholarship in grade 11 for academic excellence in grade 10. Offered only in grade 10 and each year around 10 students receive the scholarship</p>

<p>ACTIVITIES :

  1. Attended the Global Young Leaders’ Conference (GYLC) in Washington/New York this year.
  2. Swimming
  3. Singing
  4. Made Robot for science exhibition which uses sensors to travel through a maze and then using LED’s to show the intensity of the light in its path.
  5. Made a presentation on Periodic Table for the Science Exhibition in Grade 9 and a presentation on Tessellation for the Maths exhibition.
  6. Helped the team in coming 3rd in an inter-school robot competition
  7. Information Head in the school Anti-Smoking Committee in which a presentation is going to be made to the Grade 9 and 10 students on the Harmful effects of smoking, why we smoke, how to stop smoking and the harmful chemicals present in cigarettes and cigars.
  8. Participant in the Duke of Edinburgh Scholarship Program
  9. Certificate of distinction in the Green Olympiad which is an Olympiad based on knowledge of the environment.
  10. I have been learning Indian Carnatic Music vocal for over 10 years and have given a 2 and half hour concert. Apart from this i have also received the First Class Distinction in the Carnatic Music Vocal Junior Exam (which is pretty tough to get).
  11. I have also been learning Carnatic Music violin for over 4 years and have recently won 3rd place in the Inter-House Talent contest held in my school.</p>

<p>SAT SCORES:
MATH - 730
CR – 600
W - 640</p>

<p>Gave the give SAT II’s in November. Will get 700+ in Physics, Chem and Maths and hopefully if all goes well 750+.</p>

<p>Guidance Counselor Recommendation is excellent.</p>

<p>Not asking for financial aid (If it makes any difference)</p>

<p>i actually think you stand a small chance…you’re no in-state, which automatically is a disadvantage, but being international might help…your junior year GPA is a C, and thats no exactly impressive, so definently bring it up senior year, take hard courses, and write some killer essays…SEAS has the highest admittance rate, but their stats are pretty good still…i would also try to take the SAT or ACT</p>

<p>Hahaha. Do you not realize that grades are relative measures, and that different schools in different countries grade differently? My god, you’ll be crushed if you study abroad in France and get a 65 on your first exam…</p>

<p>cav - i do realize that, and since there were percentages, those are out of one hundred, and in the US, where UVA is, 72/100 is a C, and not impressive for high school</p>

<p>you have to place in context the high school itself. in where ever he went for hs, the grading scale may be different. when i went to school in canada, 80% was considered B+. You need to be #1 in the class to be even considered for 90%, and nobody ever gets above 95%. </p>

<p>i had to be 100 pages ahead of the regular class, do good on tests, and be far better than the rest of the class in math to get a 90%</p>

<p>yeah, even if it’s 72% in 11 grade, being top 10% speaks about the difficulty of getting high scores. gosh, most people in that school might be getting 60%'s.</p>

<p>Yes, shoebox. The admissions office is not staffed by r-tards. They will see that his grade point average is competitive within his school. That’s what’s important.</p>

<p>i dont see an international student getting in whose just in the top 10% of his class and is sporting a 1330.</p>

<p>if he lived in north carolina or maryland or whatever, eveyrone would say he has no shot. im not aware that the international students are in any different pile than the oos students, therefore i’m pretty confident he’ll have a difficult time getting in.</p>
