Personal Essay: 5,000 character limit. I don’t even top 4,000 yet! Is this going to hurt me? I’m attempting to continue writing to fill in some space…

“If your essay is over 5000 characters, please upload your essay as an attachment using the option below.”

So just upload it.

anth, I believe puzzling’s essay is UNDER the character limit.

Being 1,000 characters under the limit will DEFINITELY not hurt you. Somewhere on the application it says that the personal statement should not exceed 500 words. My essay was about 550 words and only 3,000 something characters. So 4,000 characters must be a pretty long essay.

I would pay more attention to the word limit (or recommended word count or whatever) than to the character limit, but don’t stress about length as long as you answer the question and are happy with your essay.

Actually, he’s saying he hasn’t written enough.

I don’t know what to tell you, I tend to be long winded, but I was easily able to write very long essays to cut in half (cut the fat, keep the juice) when i was applying. Everyone is different though. You don’t have to write something that meets the maximum number of characters, but if you absolutely cannot, perhaps you did not write about something you’re passionate about or something with a wide enough scope? You know whether what you read is good or not. If you’ve said what you feel you need to and you think this is as good as your writing gets than submit without worry.

Mine is definetly on the short side, but that’s because I maintained the 500 word limit. Just hopefully I said what neds to be said.

I wish I could - there’s only a character limit for Brown’s online app.

But I guess I should write what matters and leave out the rubbish. Better getting the point across, right?

It says 500 wds max. You should abide by the word limit. Some people use funky spacing, funky words, etc that take up a lot of characters…that’s all

o - just got it… wow do I feel dumb

So even on the online app, we’re supposed to keep to the 500-word limit? Because it doesn’t mention it ANYWHERE online and the only way you’d know is if you looked at the paper app.

now I am fully confused- does 5000 characters mean 500 words? It doesn’t say it on the online app but I see it on the printable version. Can someone clarify?

For us online applicants, we need to abide by a 5000 character limit. It doesn’t have a word limit online.

edited!
md4me: I don’t think it’s a mistake. I mean, maybe it’s a mistake if they wrote 5,000 words, but how could someone add an extra 0 AND misspell “words” into “characters”??!! That would be quite ridiculous on their part.

puzzling, if you look at the form equivalent to the question online, it distinctl says 250-500 words. The character limit is just an estimation

Argh, I’m confused too. So is everyone on here adhering to solely the 500-word limit then? I would think that if they were doing a character limit to approximate the word limit, they’d choose something closer to 3500 characteres or so. I mean, on the Common App, it’s a 500 word limit but they have a 4200 (or somewhere there abouts) character limit.

Actually, Common App. has a 6,000 character limit.

And…well…perhaps they prepare for people using “supercalifraglisticexpalidocious” every other word.

ya, they just give u a really long character limit for people who’ll type in antidisestablishmentarianism 500 times:)

harvardman just said one of my favorite words

btw who wrote an essay about loving everything having to do with celebrity gossip AND particle physics? I DID

lol totally agree

If it’s tooooo long, just mail it in.

You know, the old fashioned way with the horse, buggy & carrier ;)

its allright…mine was only 700 words ~3900 characters.

Stick to the limit on the form with which you’re applying. It’s not complicated, and if you’re getting nervous you probably need to take a chill pill.
