Checklist for College: Protecting Your Investment - Exclusive ASK ME ANYTHING w/ GradGuard on Tue, Aug 6 from 7-8pm ET

Hi @Mom824 - I’m sorry to hear you did not get your questions answered from our Membership Experience team. I can assure you our licensed agents are well versed on our pre-existing conditions coverage. As a general rule, students with well-managed chronic illnesses or pre-existing conditions can be covered with tuition insurance as long as a licensed medical professional can clear them well enough to attend school. Please try calling again or writing in to us so we can have another opportunity to better serve you and answer your questions.

are there any schools that are not eligible for this insurance?

Hi @CC_Lorenza - I assume you’re referring to tuition insurance. Tuition Insurance does not cover a situation where a student changes their course load from full time to half time. A covered student must completely withdraw from school at the recommendation of a licensed medical professional or due to another covered reason, such as job loss of a tuition payer, depending on the plan.

Does this cover broader environmental disruptions such as covid outbreaks or natural disasters? Thanks!

Any tips/guidelines for how much our student needs in renter insurance on campus?

@CC_Lorenza, Tuition Insurance is available to any student attending a four-year non-profit college or university in the U.S. The same goes for College Renters Insurance, although community college students can also take out a policy. GradGuard partner schools offer preferred pricing to students and families, but students meeting the criteria listed above can also purchase a policy on our website.

Who should I ask for when I call? Or I already wrote down our whole situation above and can email that to whoever can accurately answer that. I would like an answer soon.

When is the right time to apply for tuition insurance? Does it need to be before the start of a semester?

@Mom824 @Mjkacmom - Generally, students who are medically cleared to attend school while managing a chronic or pre-existing condition can be covered with tuition insurance. A doctor’s note that she was well enough to attend can be handy for your daughter to have on hand in case you do need to file a claim down the line. I strongly suggest calling into our membership experience team during business hours and talking to one of our friendly licensed agents about your particular situation further.

@jessica181818 - Generally, epidemics and natural disasters are excluded from most insurance plans or are subject to terms, conditions, and exclusions. Our tuition insurance plans do cover medical withdrawals due to Covid-19 illness.

@JG798 When paying your tuition bill, it’s a great time to take a look at available plans and see what coverage is right for you. Tuition insurance must be purchased prior to the start of classes. If class starts on Monday, a plan must be purchased by Sunday.

As I have said, I’ve tried that in the past and the agent was very unhelpful. I can get the letters from her doctors but as I said above there is a medication change. What is that consequence of that if we purchase your insurance. Also, If I have what issue again tomorrow when I call, who can I ask for or email. Do you have a supervisor or someone who I can speak with?

@kmcnealy1 - Think of how much stuff your student is bringing to campus. A laptop, smartphone, tablet, bike, gaming system, and clothes can all add up very quickly. Consider the impact of losing one valuable item due to theft, or the loss of many due to a fire or flood. Many students easily bring $5,000- $10,000 worth of items to school and is a common insured amount we see for personal property. Consider also if their dorm room is accidentally damaged, many students get $50,000 to $100,000 in liability coverage. You can tailor it to your needs.

are insurance options also available for graduate students?

Also, can someone at GradGuard please provide me with what information you need to see in a letter from the doctor? Does the doctor just need to say that she is medically cleared to attend college or what specifics is your company looking for? I just don’t want to waste almost $400 on one semester of tuition insurance if you will definitely exclude her automatically due to medications. Thank you.

@Mom824 - If it is due to leaving school for a covered reason, such as a serious illness, injury, or other covered reason, then generally, yes, all tuition, housing and fees (up to plan limits) would be reimbursed. Terms, conditions, and exclusions apply and I encourage you to talk about your specific situation with one of our licensed agents, as well as viewing a sample policy which can be obtained after starting the quote process.

@jessica181818 - yes, insurance options are also available for graduate students.

@Stellagirl1 - Our renters insurance has student-focused coverage with a low $100 deductible, no credit check, and rates don’t go up if you file a claim. Policies also include liability coverage and worldwide property coverage, so you’re covered when traveling, too. We don’t have any “gotchas” as we understand this is often one of the first insurance policies a student will have. That said, you don’t have to be an existing college student to get renters insurance with GradGuard. Once you resume your studies, you can update your address or pause your policy as needed.

Thanks. Helpful. Would not have thought about liability coverage.

@CalStar - When considering renters or tuition insurance, each student should have their own policy, even if they are attending the same school. We protect many international students, you can see a full list of resources on our website here: International Students | GradGuard
