The color does look great on Michelle, the cut - not so much. I think with her athletic, tall and curvy figure she would look much better in more “structured” clothes, without the fluff. The color is terrific on her.

As Cardinal Fang shows us, there are those who like her style. I have friends who do as well. I don’t know what the general opinion is about her clothes. I’ve only read snarky far right wingers looking for trouble making the critiques, and they often have other agendas.

I think that Diana was beautiful, and I loved most of her clothes. Her wedding dress was a notable exception. I consider it the ugliest wedding dress I’ve ever seen.

I think that Michelle Obama is extraordinarily beautiful, and she doesn’t look masculine to me at all. She is toned, but not overly muscular. Some of her clothes I love, for example:

Some I hate, for example, her inauguration gown and this:

I think she looks best in simple lines and bold colors.

I’m not liking Michelle’s Royal Opera Outfit either, but it’s better than Mrs. Brown’s unfortunate choice in the same pictures.

I enjoy seeing what Michelle chooses. She’s bold, and I don’t always like the choices, but they’re almost always interesting and frequently fun. (For me fashion is a spectator sport; I’m totally unfashionable myself, but I like to look at what high profile people choose.)

I don’t mind Mrs Brown’s outfit, per se, but the fit is unfortunate. I don’t like Michelle Obama’s pick there either. But I don’t like most of the stuff she wears.

There is no universal standard for beauty. Both Diana and Michelle are beautiful ladies, and their beauty is not just in their looks. The inner beauty cannot be ruined by bad makeup or wrong clothes.

I just looked at the Indian State Dinner gold dress. Now that is stunning. I do like that. First outfit of hers that I like.

I meant the fit. The dress is ok, but either a bigger size or better undergarments would be called for.

I agree. I can’t believe someone didn’t flag that outfit before she left home.

I want to like Michelle Obama’s outfits, but mostly I don’t. I think the blue dress would have looked terrific with two shoulder straps. The color and shape were fine, but the topless half looked lousy. I think she’s very attractive and obviously not fat, but somehow ends up looking a little too chunky in many of the clothes she wears. I don’t think she’s masculine, but she has less of a waist than I expect from a woman of her proportions. I agree though, that at least what she wears is interesting and fun and I like that she wears both high fashion and inexpensive things.

Wow, that Royal Opera outfit is just stupid looking. The State dinner menu item was fine. I hated her inauguration ball gown, but thought the parade outfit was pretty good.

I think Tricia Nixon’s wedding dress still looks pretty darn good, but Julie Nixon’s little puff sleeves makes me think of four year olds.

BB: True and more important.

I don’t like any of Mrs. Obama’s outfits, but oh well. I don’t think she looks approachable. It seems like clothes are an armor for her. I do think she’s beautiful. I think more classic silhouettes would look better.

But thank Heaven I am not photographed all the time!!!

My wedding dress was off the rack for $25.00. It wasn’t a wedding dress at all, but it was a long gown. Dove grey jersey, criss-cross bodice with a deep V-neck and long sleeves. Looks perfectly in style now though I wore it in 1976.

My second wedding dress was worn in 1989 and with one child (my bouquet) here already and one on the way, it was goodbye to size 3 dresses. The dress was rose pink chiffon, cut straight like a flapper dress with satin cuffs, a simple neckline and filmy chiffon sleeves in the same color with a handkerchief hem, 3/4 length. Also not a wedding gown, obviously. It had a small snag so I snagged it for $25.00. Also still perfectly in style.

DD wants me to wear it to her wedding. She was my lovely bouquet at 18 mos, and she had the most beautiful outfit: pink blouse with peter pan color and a grey velvet jumper with a bell skirt and seed pearls on the bodice. I got it on sale. Probably cost $25.00 also.

As for Diana’s dress – I think she hated it too. Was this some kind of penance for her?

The ugliest wedding dress I have ever seen was worn by Emma Thompson when she married Kenneth Branagh. I think it would take a while to post the link or I would. I can’t imagine how anyone would decide to wear that.

oh my mythmom that dress Emma Thompson wore does have to win a prize. Not sure if the link will work, but wow! http://dynimg.rte.ie/00037529-372.jpg

I thought Lady Di’s wedding dress was kind of frumpy: http://www.talkwedding.org/pictures/royal-wedding.jpg

I didn’t like Tricia Nixon’s cap. I could have worn Julie Nixon’s dress. Dated these days, but back then it was cute. The Johnson girls had dresses that looked like nuns outfits, I remember, so the Nixon dresses were a breath of fresh air.

Mythmom, your dresses seem to be gorgeous and I’d love to see them. It would be so neat to wear that second dress to your D’s wedding.

I have a standard shell pink Irish silk that I have worn to a number of weddings. I wore it to my brother’s first wedding, and nearly wore it again to his second one before I remembered, and decided that would not be a cool idea. The same thing almost happened at a dear friend’s second wedding. Her second wedding was in the fall just like her first, and the same teal dress I wore to the first would have been perfect to wear for the second except for the fact that I wore it for the first.

Aw, that picture of Lady Di and Prince Charles made me sigh. Little did she know what was coming.

I’ve been watching Say Yes to the Dress and I’m amazed at the “I want to look sexy” attitude a lot of brides have.

Wow, that Emma Thompson dress…geez…first it looks like she is wearing the wallpaper. Then, it looks like a costume for a Dutch restaurant or some such…reminds me of the little Dutch girl outfit my D wore in a scene when she played Baby June in Gypsy when she was little.

My wedding dress (early 70’s) looked much like Julie Nixon’s, but had cap sleeves instead of puffy ones. The high neckline was very common in those days, and there was a good reason for it: anything as revealing as Tricia Nixon’s open neckline and bare upper arms would never have flown in most houses of worship at the time. Note that Julie was married in a church, Tricia’s ceremony was outdoors. I like the fact that my gown reflects its time-it’s an historical relic after all!

I do agree that Tricia’s dress is stunning and most of the girls who jam themselves into strapless gowns would look 100% better in that style. Except for those who are very slender and totally toned, brides wearing strapless dresses usually suffer from the same unattractive underarm/boob bulge that bedevils Michelle Obama and all of them seem to spend a great deal of their wedding day pulling up their bodices. I don’t know if their tops are actually slipping down or it just feels that way to someone who never wears strapless, but it is sooo spoils the image when the blushing bride gives a giant yank to the top of her dress every few minutes. I see it over and over.

The evolution in wedding gowns tracks the evolution of the image of the bride. Once she was the modest and proper virgin being handed over from father to husband. Today, er, not so much.

Michelle Obama had quite a majestic wedding dress. Not my style but flatters her. I don’t believe that Emma Thompson dress. Didn’t she wear a white dress too, and this was must for show?

I’ve seen some wild wedding dresses at designer shows. I’ve only known one bride who actually wore one. Gorgeous, gorgeous bride, but I think she would have looked so much more beautiful in a more traditional dress.

Thanks so much cptofthehouse.

Emma Thompson’s hat is so horrible, with the plume sticking up. Mathmom I commend you for finding the link so quickly.

I think the point they were trying to make with Princess Di is: this is a virgin. Make no mistake about that!

I think that was the objection to Camilla. Too sad for all involved, though only Princess Di’s genes could save the family. The boys look lovely. I hope they are and okay.

Camilla and Charles together? Hm.

Now I’m being utterly shallow.

Well, Diana is like a swathed shepherdess, but she was really the lamb. Poor dear.

Oh, and Julie was only 19, like Di. Maybe that’s just too young in our times to look chic at your wedding, whereas I think Tricia was 23 or 24.

I KNOW! Kleinfeld’s should change their name to “Cleavage R Us.” I’ve already told D that I will not pay for a wedding dress if she’s falling out of it.
