I hadn’t heard about that Nixon comment, mythmom - or, if I did, I blocked it. Really awful.

I think the boning created that problem. Unfortunate.

When there were Syrian tanks halfway across the Golan, in October of 1973, Richard Nixon opened America’s arsenals to the IDF. I will forgive a man who grew up in unenlightened places and times a few remarks.

Mythmom, I’ve always associated that term with Jessie Jackson. So Nixon used it, too? I guess that shouldn’t surprise me.

My dress was timeless, my body is not.

What does the hymie town thing mean?

nevermind - I just googled it. Not a term I am familiar with. charming.

Its an ethnic slur referring to NY

chaim is a traditional jewish name, way back when there were men with the given name chaim and the nick name “hymie”. New York was called Hymietown in a somewhat derogatory way - equivalent to “Jew York”, etc.

when my dad entered the navy during WW2 he was regularly asked if he was “from New York”. He replied that he was from Philadelphia, at least until he figured out what they were really asking.

I remember that comment from Jesse Jackson - not particularly surprising that Nixon said the same.

NYMom, thanks for the link. Yes … Tricia Nixons dress was gorgeous and she looked stunning in it. I wish her son well in his political endeavors. Julies dress was nice but not as elegant as Tricias.

Both dresses do look a bit dated. Though Ivanka Trump wore a dress that would fit timelessly, I think. The bare shoulder dresses would have looked out of place back them.
But the homespun Laura Ashley Dresses look out of date now too. I don’t know if the Princess Di look ever was in vogue. Noone I knew married in something that poufy.

My former SIL was married in Laura Ashley and her bridesmaids all wore Laura Ashley as well. This was 25 years ago, and the clothes are still very much in style. Both mothers dressed beautifully and timelessly at that wedding too.

My wedding dress though very pretty is not something one would see these days. I was glancing at some collections and was struck at how many shoulderless dresses are featured, and so few of what used to be in style.

I don’t like the way Michelle Obama dresses, and that blue one shoulder dress looks terrible in my opinion. The MOB of the last wedding I attended wore a navy one shoulder dress that was elegant and drop dead gorgeous. And something I think most women could wear. I don’t understand how Michelle Obama looks so terrible in her clothes with her tall, rangy, athletic build. She should look great in everything and anything.

IMHO, the problem with the Michelle Obama blue dress is fit, not design. That shouldn’t happen in a couture dress sewed for the individual – sloppy dressmaking.

My friend whose daughter debuted last year commented that she hoped that the shoulderless wedding dresses would not be so prevalent when her D gets married, since she already has tried on hundreds of such dresses at David’s. Those debutante dresses are just wedding dresses with the train cut off.

I don’t know, Hanna, about whether that dress’s problem is fit. A lot of her clothes fit that way which makes me think that is the look she wants. I don’t care for it, but there are those who do.

I think Michell Obama looks very masculine, unlike Princess Diana who was also tall and looked beautiful in everything.

How exactly does Michelle Obama look masculine?

Depends on the eyes of the beholder.
You can’t see it?

I don’t see it. She looks like a very attractive, tall, athletic woman. I just don’t care for her taste in clothes. One of my close friends is built like she is but wears very different cut clothes and looks very feminine, classic, elegant, in my opinion.

But I realize it is a matter of taste. I’m more of a Laura Bush type when it comes to clothers anyways.

Hanna, I agree …… the problem with the blue dress Michelle Obama is wearing is the fit.

cbreeze, I agree …. Michelle does have a masculine look to me also. I think she would look better is Lauren Bacall type outfits.

I love Michelle Obama’s clothes, in general. I don’t understand the comparison with Princess Di, who had a very very different body type. Princess Di was tall but slight; Michelle is athletic, with curves. What Princess Di wore would look ridiculous on Michelle Obama.

I love it that Michelle dresses in bright, bold colors and isn’t afraid to take chances.

I think she looks good when dressed like a normal person, but after putting on all that garbage, she looks silly.
