Right now, i’m deciding between PSU honors and northwestern. Northwestern has the better chemistry program, but I’m planning to go to graduate school, so I don’t think it really matters. I live instate, so I’m leaning towards PSU. Anyone know anything about the chemistry program at penn state? Thanks

I have a few chemistry major friends (freshman) here at schreyer, and all of them have had great experiences. All have either found research to do during the semester and/or summer research internships all over the country. I can’t speak for NW, but in my experience, if you work towards your end goal (grad school) early, you will get where you want to go.

psu_shc, what do you know about journalism at penn state and journalism in schreyer’s college? What opportunities have you and others found, like internships, from being at schreyer’s? Finally, what do know about the sports journalism program, is it the best in the country? Thank you!

Hi ryno26,
A few of the kids in my Honors Eng. class were planning on being journalism majors. I don’t know too much about the specifics of the program (send me a private message with your contact info, and I’ll put a friend in touch if you want), but I can tell you a few things about the shc in relation to journalism:
- We had a famous journalist , peter klein, come to PSU to give the SHC’s annual Luchinsky lecture: http://engage.shc.psu.edu/?s=luchinsky
- A lot of SHC journalism scholars are involved with the Daily Collegian (i believe the editor is an SHC Scholar)
- The Lion.FM is a very good activity for those interested in any aspect of broadcast journalism (if you have any questions on the lion, a good friend of mine is an exec)
- We had Bob Costas give a lecture in the fall ( i couldn’t attend, but it was packed)

In terms of opportunities, they are endless, as long as you try to find them and have a general idea of what you want.

I have secured an internship (through career services, not shc, although my being a scholar influenced a lot), participated in leadership jumpstart (an shc course that allows freshmen to design and execute a large service project), am particpating in the SHC Distinguished Alumni Mentor program, which aims to pair you with very successful PSU Alumni in a mentoring relationship. I could go on…but I’ll just end by saying you will be easily able to find activities and opportunities that interest you as an SHC Scholar and a PSU Student.

Hope that helped!
