Chia seeds

D brought a bag home. What should we do with them?

Our local newspaper did a feature on the health benefits of chia seeds so I looked them up on Amazon and bought a bag. I am borderline diabetic and have problems with low blood sugar which chia is supposed to help. I don’t know whether it is all in my head but I just started my 5th bag. I add a tablespoon to my Greek yogurt every morning and sprinkle them on my salads. When you mix them with a liquid, they become a gel. It could be just the power of suggestion but I haven’t been having that shaky feeling of low blood sugar.

I don’t know what you do with them and didn’t even know you could eat them. But they were an ingredient in a recent episode of Chopped on the Food Network.

Where do you buy them? Are they only on line?

Trader Joe now has them…bags in the cereal department.

Or – you can mix them into a paste with water and spread them on your Chia pet! CH-ch-ch-Chia!

Lamom she picked them up at Trader Joes

H and I add some to our cereal in the am.

My d told me to purchase some when i started dieting because they are a good source of fiber, omega 3, anti-oxidants and it would help to curb my appetite. I add them to my greek yogurt and to my protein shakes.

They absorb a ridiculous amount of water and get kind of a tapioca-like texture. You can make a pudding by mixing them with liquid, spices, and sweetener if you want it. I use almond milk with vanilla, maple syrup, and cinnamon, and have it for breakfast or a smack with fresh fruit mixed in. You want about a 1 to 3 chia to liquid ratio, but it’s flexible. It needs to sit for about an hour to absorb the water.

You could also blend this to get a smooth pudding.

Another idea is to mix them with oatmeal while you’re cooking it and they ned up not being very noticeable. Chia are good because they’re really high in protein and omega-3’s.

I put chia seeds in any food. However, my favorite thing to put them in is water or lemonade. I usually fill up a water bottle, and let them soak inside for a few hours and then I drink up.(They usually change texture once they soak up water)

I put them in my hair to turn it green and frizzy.

^^^ oh where is that thumbs up button?!

I am told you can put them in pancakes, eggs, milkshakes, muffins, or lemonade. Apparently there are instructions on the bag. I personally have not tried them yet.

I noticed recently they’re in one of the Oroweat bread varieties.

They’re tasty on a salad! You can add them to anything, I like them on sandwiches and cooked vegetables.

Just wondering, can you eat too many? I have been experimenting by adding them to many things and know that I need to have enough fluids but will too much have any bad effects?

I think they’re pretty high-fiber, so I’m assuming you could get the usual eating-too-much fiber effects. It would probably take a lot, though.

Also, if you were putting them in pancakes or muffins, it would probably be as an egg substitute. Since they form a gel mixed with water, they have a similar binding effect.

Thanks, Mini…that’s what this thread brought to my mind!
