Mendelssohn violin concerto ;)

Raffi’s kind of lost it lately:

[Touring Raffi Refuses To Play ‘Shake My Sillies Out’ | The Onion - America’s Finest News Source](Touring Raffi Refuses To Play 'Shake My Sillies Out')

^^^^Awww, that was such a cute song!^^^^

Raffi kind of went through a “change” several years ago - I think he’s left the kid department. (but we listened to him over and over and over…!)

Another favorite of my kids for trips were to borrow the Arthur (PBS show) CD’s from the library - they LOVED the show (still talk about the episodes) and the CD’s had many of the goofy songs from the episodes.

Arthur songs! I still sing Crazy Bus when things get wild at work!

Anyone else ever heard of Red Grammer?

I knew Bill Harley in college and even played in a band with him for a short while–it’s funny, though, I had lost touch with him and didn’t realize he had become a famous children’s music guy until my son was a bit old for that kind of stuff, so his records never became a staple in our house. He is every bit as funny and nice a person as you would guess from the songs.

The one bit of kids’ music I remember vividly is a book/tape called Crocodile Smile by Sarah Weeks, featuring songs sung from the point of view of endangered animals. Great lyrics, not at all preachy, and the music is irresistible–sophisticated enough for adults to enjoy but very kid-accessible. I don’t know if it’s available any more, though.

OMG, remember those “Wee Sing” Videos (VHS)??? They were SOOOOOOO corny! (but my D loved them…)

Raffi for the little ones. Then Tom Chapin and trout fishing in america for a bit older kids. We all love trout fishing in america. My 21 yr old s has their adult stuff on his ipod.

Breakfaset Blues

You give me hard eggs in the morning,
Cheese omelet you go.
Yeah, you give me hard eggs in the morning,

(Jelly roll it again?

When the kids were about 12 or 13 they bought as much Dr. Demento as they could find. Great old silly stuff.

I had a date with Dr. Demento every Sunday night for years.

We had a couple of those Wee Sing videos. How I did hate them…but kids thought they were the best. Over and over again.

A favorite cd in our car was Big Blues. We would all sing along to Michelle Shocked, Taj Mahal (my favorite) and all the others. We wore out a couple of copies of that one.

I remember taking my children (now 16 & 19) to a free Sharon, Lois and Bram concert. We loved the Elephant Show!

Also liked Bethie (got tapes from our library) - I think full name is Beth Marlin Lichter

Also went to concerts for Rosenshontz; singers Gary Rosen and Bill Shontz

We lived in Pittsburgh, PA for a while and a local show was Cappelli and Company, with Frank Cappelli

Lots of fun memories . . .

That name sounded familiar, so I had to dig through a drawer full of old cassettes. Sure enough, I found one called, “Can You Sound Just Like Me?”

I also found an old lullabye tape that I bet several of you had.
It’s called “A Child’s Gift of Lullabyes” and the song list consists of:

Playing a Lullaby
Tomorrow We’ll Go to the Fair
Someday Baby
Hushabye Street
Wings (my favorite)
Appalachian Lullaby
I L.O.V.E. You
Lullaby for Teddy
Dream Theme

“The sooner you sleep, the sooner you’ll wake, tomorrow we’ll go to the fair…” That takes me back almost 20 years.

We had all the Classical Kids tapes…Mr. Bach Comes to Call, Hallelujah Handel, Mr. Beethoven Sleeps Upstairs, etc. I still buy them (now the CDs) as baby gifts. It’s awfully cool when your kid three year old is out and hears a portion of The Four Seaons and says, “Vivaldi.”

My kids loved Sandra Boynton’s Rhinoceros Tap and Bill Wellington’s Camp Woof songs. Bill Wellington especially got us through a lot of long car rides.

We started with a Disney CD to raise money for AIDS research that came out in 1991 - the year our first was born. it was great - here is the song list with artist:
- Give A Little Love – Ziggy Marley & The Melody Makers
- This Old Man – Bob Dylan
- Cushie Butterfield – Sting
- Mary Had A Little Lamb – Paul McCartney
- The Ballad Of Davy Crockett – Stephen Bishop
- Itsy Bitsy Spider – Little Richard
- Chicken Lips And Lizard Hips – Bruce Springsteen
- Country Feelin’s – Brian Wilson
- Blueberry Pie – Bette Midler
- Pacifier – Elton John
- Getting To Know You – James Taylor
- Autumn To May – Ann & Nancy Wilson
- Child Of Mine – Carole King
- Tell Me Why – Pat Benatar
- A Medley Of Rhymes – Debbie Gibson
- Blanket For A Sail – Harry Nilsson
- Good Night, My Love (Pleasant Dreams) – Paula Abdul
- Gartan Mother’s Lullaby – Meryl Streep
- Golden Slumbers – Jackson Browne & Jennifer Warnes
- A Child Is Born – Barbra Streisand

Then came Raffi - a big obsession with my oldest when he was 2 and 3 years old! (And FYI, you guys know that the Onion is satire, right? The article about Raffi & Shake My Sillies Out is a joke…)

That was followed up by Tom Chapin - I loved his song about Garbage:
Good garbage breaks down as it goes
That’s why it smells bad to your nose!
Bad garbage grows and grows and grows
Garbage is supposed to decompose

And family get togethers:
Cousins, cousins, here come the boys
Bedlam, mayhem, noise noise noise
Blow up the air mattresses
hide the breakable toys
Cousins cousins, here come the boys!

Oh - this is a dangerous thread right now a week and a half after my son left for college 10 hours away! I have to go dig out the Disney AIDS CD now and have a good cry…

We also had Peter, Paul & Mommy.Lots of Raffi ( Baby Beluga)& Charlotte Diamond . Fred Penner.
Speaking of children’s music, at the hootenanny I went to last night, they played * Crimson & Clover*;), that passed for children’s music when I was 11.

I work with young children, so I still get to listen to many of the songs mentioned on this thread. Our classroom staples include Raffi, Greg and Steve, Jack Hartman and Dr. Jean.

In my own house we loved the Disney cassettes and videos. I can still picture my son jumping in his jumper to the Disney videos. He especially loved Baloo the Bear in the Bear Necessities video. We also had Peter, Paul and Mommy with the song Daddy’s Taking Us to the Zoo Tomorrow as one of our favorites.

emeraldkity4 - You Can Close Your Eyes is on James Taylor’s Greatest Hits. My boys used to go to sleep to that song.

@always a mom, the Eric Nagler sings to the music of Merry Widow Waltz…is that Tom Chapin’s song?

This is the right crowd to inquire: has anyone heard Sarah Lee Guthrie’s new (er, 2009) CD, “Go Waggaloo” with her family singing, some Woody Guthrie lyrics put new to music, play-ins by Pete and Arlo… I’m hoping someday for grandchildren but might get it for ME if I can’t wait.

I remember driving the length of Ca with D when she was almost 2 yrs old. She was obsessed with Baby Beluga. She wanted to listen to it the entire trip over and over again. This was the day of cassettes. I remember constantly trying to rewind and get it back to the beginning of the song. I think that was the trip we decided that D1 was not a good traveler.

I think if you got a group of 20ish year olds together and started playing Baby Beluga you would see that most of them still totally know the words by heart and that they would all have great big huge smiles on their faces (and maybe dance around a little). :)

Fred Penner. I haven’t thought of him in YEARS!!! Didn’t he love the outdoors???
