chipotle--from rising star to stumbling in less than 2 years

chipotle is still trying to recover from multiple outbreaks of food borne illness across the country…now this.
while I realize it may not even be true, this is publicity chipolte does not need.

What is it they say, it rains when it pours? Chipotle is an interesting case study, in some ways their business plan killed them. Chipotle when founded (before Mickey D’s bought them) emphasized that they used fresh ingredients, bought local, the meat didn’t have anti biotics or hormones, sold it in effect as “healthful eating”, so when this hit people basically saw that as a letdown…whereas if a typical fast food restaurant had this happen, I wonder if the impact would be as much, if people would shrug and say “not surprised at all”, given the reputation fast food places have, with factory farmed meat, chicken nuggets made out of everything but chicken meat, etc.

yeah… I actually think the average person on line at the Chiptotle near me does not care about factory farming or any of that stuff. they care about price, waiting time, taste and they probably heard about the food borne illness issues…they may not be certain what occurred they just know enough that they stopped going for a while.

I stopped going to Chipotle for a while after the first foodborne illness incidents – and I went to other fresh Mex places and other fast casual places instead. And I remembered that those other restaurants also have good food, and they also have more varied menus than Chipotle does.

The temporary change in my habits became permanent.

Never understood the Chipotle hype, which prevented me from ever investing in the company’s stock, which made me have second thoughts about my decision at times. Happy I didn’t do it now but some people made a lot of $ and some people have lost a lot of $ depending on their timing.

If you live or work in an area where there are seemingly taco trucks on every corner, then there is plenty of tasty variety to choose from…

I have never understood the hype around Chipotle. I have tried it more than once and never found it particularly good.

The one on the U of M campus used to always have a line out the door at lunchtime but since last year, it’s pretty dead.

My kids and I actually really like Chipotle. One son would drive several miles to get Chipotle (and has).

My kids will never stop going to Chipotle! Personally I think it’s OK, not anything special.

I thought something was wrong with me - I have never liked Chipotle though I love the concept and what they’re trying to do.

My husband, on the other hand, eats Chipotle every other day.

It’s very popular here and especially with college kids. I like it. You can actually eat Whole 30 there, which I don’t do but I have friends who go on Whole 30 and the Chipotle type places work.

I have had it at most twice. It was too much food for me. My dd used to go there with her friends but has now switched more to Panera. So many knock off restaurants have opened in our area that there is a lot more choice.
For example an indian version of Chipotle in our area is very successful. It happens to be near a university.

There is not much “fast food” I will choose. I love Chipotle - I actually haven’t had it for awhile - several months I guess - until today! - this thread made it my take out of choice tonight since I was eating alone!

I get a bowl and split it in two meals. 1/2 tonight, 1/2 for lunch tomorrow. No chips, salsa or guac - though I like it.

Many fast food places have gone through rough times - many (most?) make it through and keep chugging along.

Chipotle has been pumped by Cramer on CNBC for as long as I can remember! There is not a single day it is not mentioned. Sometimes, the price of a stock has nothing to do with underlying value of the business… “Cramer’s goodwill” aka pump and (eventually) dump. Nifty fifty, Krispy Kreme, etc.

I love the idea of Chipotle, but when one finally opened around here, I found the food so salty that I could barely eat it. I tried it several times, and tried it in another city - same thing. I love salt and never find food too salty.

Do they have carnitas again? I haven’t been in awhile and that was my preference and then they stopped carrying it for a long time because of sourcing issues and it not being organic (despite initial claims that it was).

Years ago Chipotle was my son’s favorite restaurant. It was just another restaurant to me.

They were supposed to open one in the town I live in just south of San Francisco, but I heard a couple days ago that it fell through.

Ugh. Reminds me of when I invested in Boston Market. It was great at first, but then suddenly went downhill. I had to work an extra 10 years to recover from that one!

My youngest DS loved it and was there all the time. I liked it well enough, but never went out of my way for it. I actually like Moe’s Southwestern Grill more, not sure if that’s A chain or not. I haven’t been back to Chipotle since their issue though.

Moe’s is a chain owned by the same company as Schlotzsky’s, Carvel, Cinnabon, and Auntie Anne’s.

I’ve eaten at Chipotle once. I simply don’t get it. It wasn’t particularly good or bad. I certainly won’t go out of my way to go there again.
