Citizen Science - I Am HOOKED

A podcast I listen to regularly mentioned this website last week as a place to go help out with a citizen science project they are working on. I didn’t feel well enough trained to help with the initial project that sent me to the site… but I poked around at some of the others, and I have a new addiction. There are 80 projects to pick from!

I think there is a phone version, but I’m just doing it on my laptop at the moment.

@intparent what a cool idea! I’ve just glanced at the website and there are several projects that look really interesting. Thanks so much for posting the link!

Occasionally we see kids looking for science ECs when they live in a place where they can’t really find opportunities – getting really involved in one of these projects might be a good EC. I remember one kid who had some serious surgery and couldn’t leave his house for months, for example – this would have been a good activity. Some serious participants even get mentioned in papers sometimes! If it helps a kid learn more about an area of research interest, that is worth something as well.

Some of them are hard. I found it is good to click on the Learn About before trying the get started/tutorial. It helps you better understand what you need to do. A couple are just too hard for me – I just can’t see what they want me to see, and I don’t want to mess up their data. So far I liked the Solar Stormwatch II best (feel like helping protect the earth from Solar Storms is a good use of my time!). And it wasn’t too hard to learn.

I sent the Penguin Count one to D1, who loves penguins and might want to help with their preservation.

I did find that Microsoft Edge doesn’t work so well with it – Explorer mostly worked fine. I suspect it might be best with Chrome, but my laptop crashes every time I load Chrome, so I can’t experiment with that.

Thanks for sharing the link!

How cool is this? Thanks @intparent !

@MrsRadish I think you have my new favorite user name. Lol! Love it.

@Lindagaf It was the name of the babysitter I threatened to hire for my kids when they were behaving in birth control mode.
