Reputation - Claremont McKenna
Ranking - Claremont McKenna
Academics - Tie
People - Ambitious conservative jocks at Claremont McKenna
nerdy liberal hippies at Grinell
Partying - Claremont McKenna

Reputation:
Midwest- Grinnell
West- CMC
East- Equal, edge on CMC
Overall- Both are recognized by top grad schools and employers as about equal

Ranking- CMC by 4 points in USNWR, but ranking means nothing anyway

Academics- Slight edge on Grinnell as it has a crazy intense workload

People- Depends on school
Grinnell- Hardworking, Highly Intelligent, non-competative, “nerdy” (but not always, i visited and talked to many “normal” people), Super Liberal
CMC- A little more preppy and athletic (though not that much more), a little more laid back, liberal

Partying- CMC, but there are still plenty of parties at Grinnell

Small Colleges has the cultural difference nailed. But I’d say reputation and academics for the sciences (East coast and Midwest)-Grinnell significantly over Claremont McKenna. Can’t speak to the social sciences or humanities.

All of the schools in Claremont California are superb, and allow for cross matriculation of classes: Pitzer, Pomona, Claremont McKenna, Scripps, Harvey Mudd. So the “Science” thing mentioned above is solved by taking classes at Pomona or Mudd.

Claremont is generally more conservative.

CMC more pre-professional.
CMC highly values leadership.

As I recall, when we visited Pomona, the amount of cross-registering you could do was limited and you did not get ‘first pick’ of courses and profs at the other schools. You might want to check what the policy is at CMC if you plan to major in the sciences and think that Harvey Mudd and Pomona are going to make up for a weaker sciences program at CMC.

I suspect that Grinnell is better known by adult in the Northeast and Claremont McKenna and the rest of the Claremont Consortium colleges better known by the kids. The Claremont Colleges have received a decent amount of press in recent years.

That’s not a knock on Grinnell per se as much as apparent geographic bias as to where kids want to go to school in my town in CT. Grinnell, Drake, University of Iowa and Iowa State have not even had an applicant from our school since Naviance reports it (2003). Meanwhile, Pomona had 14 applicants and CMC had nine.

ctyankee, that really doesn’t mean anything. 50% of Grinnells students come from outside the midwest and 12% are internationals.

I don’t think your school data is very relevant.

cmc is pre-professional partying, cross-registering, very strong in social sciences and international relations etc. and more moderate/conservative than the other claremont colleges.

And it may not be relevant. But nothing you posted does a bit to prove that Grinnell draws successfully from the Northeast.

As far as 11 percent international students (from their website) that is impressive compared to other LAC that can only manage 2 percent international students. Having said, that it looks like some window dressing on. They can get a kid from Zimbabwe but can’t manage to get one credible applicant from Canada or Mexico?

Grinnell is more like Pomona, a broad-gauged liberal arts college. Grinnell is very strong in the sciences. CMC is focused on the social sciences, especially political science, economics and business. Because of this, it draws a slightly more traditional student. Grinnell students would share more in common with Pomona students than with those at CMC. All are well-regarded in their spheres, though none are well-known generally. If you want well-known, go to Iowa or UCLA.

On partying, people party everywhere.

-reputation : Claremont
-ranking : Claremont
-academics : Claremont
-the people there : TIE
-partying : Grinnell

If you’re interested in research or academia, Grinnell is in the top ten of the country at undergrad preparation for a PhD, for all combined fields of study.
