My D is signing up for classes for junior year. She is taking French 4 this year so could stop taking languages now but I am worried that this will not look good to colleges. She could go on to take AP French next year. She is very music/theater oriented but a great student all around. Not interested in science an actually likes French (just not the teacher). Has taken honors Bio in 9th and honors Chemistry this year. Wants to skip science next year and take AP earth science senior year. This would give her space to take AP Music Theory next year which she really wants to take ASAP. She will also be taking AP Language and AP US History next year. Anyway, the basic question is which is worse - stopping languages after 10th grade or skipping a science junior year? She will only need 3 sciences for HS graduation.
She plan to apply to fairly competitive schools with strong theater programs.
I think that colleges like to see one of each core class each year of high school, including science. She should take one of each of the 3 sciences (bio, chem, physics). Since she’s already reached level 4 of a language, there would not be any significant harm in dropping French.
