Class of 2011 from Nepal...lets discuss here

WOW…one day n soo many pages…someone turn on the ACs now…fans r not enough…
I thought that I will never get a chance to post…(just readin…readin…n readin…)…
Neways…Buddhaforever, u will prefer LACs over Stanford?..well its ur choice…but if u hav complains for Stanford then here is the big Stanford fan willing to sort evry problem u hav with Stanford…(Just for the information, Stanford has got the best campus life…!!!..)…
And Welcome Death…(I guess I m a bit late to welcome…lol…)…
davinci and buddhaforever r helpin each other…and they got company too…Wat am I supposed to do in here???..
And to evryone…while I was reading through the pages I hav found a misconception which is highly misleading…
The commerce and science thing u all were talkin bout was blunderous…
Wat about the scholarship thing???..evryone can get fin.aid provided he/she is accepted in a need-blind/need-based colleges…or may get Merit scholarships if the college is not even need based…
I didnt got wat u meant by the comparision of Commerce students with Science students???..Care explaining??

the nepali thread constantly vanished from the front page last year… this year it’s always on the top! good job guys!!

I think commerce students meaning the ones who take courses like BOOM or psychology will stand less of a chance agianst the students taking physics or chemistry given the vast difference of the rigor in those two categories.

i am not sure that will happen buddhaforever coz my friends from the arts or commerce a levels background have been into better colleges than the others…however numbers tell a different story…the trend in nepal is such that many “talented” students opt science at least in the +2 or I Sc or A Levels, and few such students opt arts or commerce…so “hardworking and talented” students will have more chances…against those from the arts or commerce background…i don’t agree fully with what i have said…but this seems to be the prevailing case in nepal

Yeah…I agree with Davincicodes…

yes davincicodes, i totally agree to u coz that’s the most prevalent approach towards judging the quality of students in nepal but i wonder if that’s the same in US. just think, if a college offers a business major, would it be more interested in taking students who have science background or those who have commerce background for that particular major?

abt the rigor of a subject, i guess its hard to define coz many students who are good in science don’t get good marks in accounts (talking abt SLC level here) or in economics or social studies for that matter. if accounts, eco, etc. are less rigorous, why don’t ‘talented students’ (the common nepali stereotype) get good marks in the ‘easier’ subjects? i won’t disagree that in general, students who take up science stream are more talented but it does not apply to every science student… by god’s grace, i was equally good and interested in both science and accounts. so after SLC. i planned on taking science only if i got into stx. i didn’t but i was still happy to get into commerece but now i’ve realized it was a wrong decision.anyway.i got distinction in +2 as well. as they say, everything happens for a reason.maybe something good waiting for me in the future. if US plan fails, there’s always Australia 2 look forward 2…hehe…

issac my friend, in nepal, in general, a school contains only upto grade 10. after grade 10, you go to a college for grades 11 and 12 and this is when you choose to take up either a science or commerce or humanities stream. in nepal, except in schools/colleges with a-levels, you can’t study a mixture of science, commerce or arts subjects in grades 11 and 12, you’re allowed to choose only one stream of subjects. hope you are clear. i thought it was a similar system in india. how does it work there?

yah… i’ve always liked science, felt it helps develop analytical thinking and perhaps that’s the way other things are also to be learnt… and that’s why I think you need to have scientific or mathematical background to be successful… I wud’ve chosen science anyways, so it was obvious… i really didn’t care when!
Science for me is just the way to think… others are the ways to adapt in society…

let me tell you a story:

There were these two guys who were best buddies and among the most talented of students among their peers. They did all their work together in high school - clubs, job and extracurriculars, except that one had science classes (maths, physics, further maths and chem) and the other commerece (BS, Literature, spanish). They were both bright students and they also applied to the same schools. But the result was drastically different between the two. The one with science classes went to Yale after having been accepted in MIT, dartmouth, stanford, caltech. The other got rejected everywhere and went to Luther college.

The moral of the story: I should have mentioned the quality of essays and reco letters of both.

hey i get the feeling that when i am active the thread gets active… come on I am the class of 2010.

yay! go class of 2010!

how was your first sem buddhaforever?

alright…wasn’t bad getting 4.0 is kinda easy here but i was a bit lazy. i am happy to get done with the freshman writing and core…

nice to see another '10 member joining us…say u posting in other threads aaron56 but you never joined us here. anyway how is the class of 2011 doing?

cricster: Well, the system is almost same here…But I still didnt got the poit which u all wanna make out…
How Commerce students r at a ‘‘disadvantage’’ in comparision with Science students???..they both hav separate majors…separate course load/work…

WOW…1600th post!!!..way to go!!!..

i’m so glad the writing core stuff was waived off for me. In fact, we don’t have core courses… just a first year seminar and distribution requirements. oh and yea… i was kinda lazy first sem too. cleanin up my act this spring though!

but i’ve become a nocturnal creature again… it’s 5 in the morning and i haven’t gone to bed!!!
