Class of 2014!

That’s true. It does annoy me. (@surfup)

But you have to have SOME way to differentiate right? Otherwise what would we base a meritocracy on? Even holistic admissions have to take numbers into account. Much to my chagrin, considering my math score throws off my entire app, but OK will not whine about that again haha.

40 and 95 is too huge a difference to dismiss completely though.

Mmm cheese, maybe, but as long as that’s not ALL it’s about.

Haha, I’m the Probasi variety though, but Bangali nonetheless. I was actually a Humanities ISC student, but I left to do the IB, which had a mix of everything, and my only science was Biology so yeah, Humanities, definitely, if I had to pick.

Btw, is JU really the best place to study in Cal these days? It seemed rather bad during my father’s time. Are Presidency etc. that far gone now? I find this shift in Indian colleges rather intriguing.

Its weird how we don’t have ANY rankings here

I personally would want to go to Presidency or St.Stephens. Shashi Taroor and Amartya Sen FTW!

OH MY GOD PARADOX there’s FINALLLLLLLYYYYYYYY a fellow Humanitieser on CC! Despite IB and all. You have no idea how much I’ve hoped for one, to no avail. :p

JU is brilliant for English. It’s got one of the most innovative and fastest-growing English departments in Asia. Presidency’s still one of the best though.

Stephens is brilliant, but for English, JU> Stephens.

I know if I’ve done well or not. Its an internal thing. I can’t explain it.

Yeah, JUDE (Jadavpur University Department of English) is pretty awesome.

I can guess, but I’m often wrong.

You have a superpower, cheese. :p

Don’t we all have one, quasi :)?

Quasi, is JU where you wanna go if you dont end up going to US?

Apparently mine is ranting about Russia and making mean comments to people. :p

Edit: Yeah gappy, I probably won’t get in though :stuck_out_tongue: and will end up at Bhaggu.

Its a deadly combination, Q :D!!

Haha, to us Bangalis who do nothing better than be dregs of the Humanities.

Everyone from Cal seems to descend either in DU or Bombay colleges though and everyone keeps talking about how Presdency is really bad. Is it because Naxalism/Communism is still a worry for people or is it just that the quality has detiororated? I would love to study in Kolkata though, it’s the perfect setting for a college, in so many ways. I wonder why Delhi took over.

Yeah, I will stay in Cal if I stay in India. I don’t know anybody who thinks Presidency is bad. Most people in my class want to go to JU, or law school (at NUJS or Bangalore), or to Xavier’s. There are as many people aiming for Cal as for Stephens.

Q, what are the cut-offs for JUDE?

I can’t help it if I’m like that when I first meet someone :$

Haha, my 9 and 10 marks are WAY worse than my 11 and 12 marks. But Quasi TOTALLY trumps me in terms of cool knowledge.

And I judge everyone when I first meet them. It’s a really, really horrible trait of mine.

Tetris, what was your first impression of me?

That’s strange about Presidency. Maybe just that other places seem to be of more interest to the people I’ve met. There’s a college in Bombay that people talk about in a similar vein-Elphinstone which if you recognise from ICSE History was The Grand Old Man of India’s (among many other illustrious ones) alma mater, but no one in Bombay except the ones who scored like 45% would dare go there. I find the entire state of non-professional education, our regular Arts and Sciences colleges in India to be such a mess. Thankfully, there are a few that are still better than others, even if it’s the name-brand more than the quality of education.

The cutoff isn’t high, but their entrance exam is wacky and difficult. :S

tetris, I didn’t say it was a bad thing, I was just explaining! :stuck_out_tongue: And shoo, that’s not true. I love you. <3

Mmmm wow Paradox you’ve had a pretty different experience from me then. And yeah, it’s a mess in many ways, but it works overall I think. You just have to know what you want.

Wow, everyone just went away at once. xD.
