***Class Of 2015 NMSF Qualifying Scores***

FWIW, my son did not get this particular Carleton mailing, but he has been bombarded all summer with other Carleton mailings! He has a 219 in Texas. How weird it that! I have no idea what he must have checked on his College Board surveys because he is getting a broad range of mail!

Anyone else get the prescription bottle mailing from St. Louis College of Pharmacy yesterday? Pretty cool, except that pharmacy is not on his radar.

Notified by school – 222 was enough to be a designated semi-finalist here in Virginia.

yes, my daughter received the bottle. Very clever!

Any score over 224 is considered automatically in unless some State breaks that barrier for the first time this year.

So 233 does not require a letter for confirmation.

There is a flag on PSAT test stating you are interested in hearing from colleges. If you don’t flag it, the colleges may not know you exist (unless they bought a list with people scoring above a certain number in a section).

215 in Florida, waiting to hear from my daughter’s school

Commended (national cutoff) = 201

@texaspg, don’t forget that the colleges are getting this info from the ACT and SAT as well, so even if the student didn’t flag it on the PSAT, they could still be getting mail. In our case, I think my son checked engineering or science for major, and “I don’t have a clue” for everything else, or perhaps he checked “I am interested in small colleges very far from Texas that only have 3 majors available, including nuclear engineering and medieval anthropology”, because those schools have found him!

Originally posted in wrong thread…
For those that have been down this road before, is it okay to post the good news on social media before the official release on the 10th?

^^I wouldn’t do it. It’s my understanding that the school is permitted to share the information with the student and his or her family, but not anyone else. I imagine they would ask that it not be shared further.

^^Especially not here.( jk)

I am so annoyed because my daughter’s school told me that they were informed by the NMSC that they cannot notify students who are Semifinalists until Sept. 10 and I know that this is not true!!!

IMHO, that is too close to a “public” release of a specific name and I wouldn’t do it.

I agree. Surely I can wait another week after all these months!

I didn’t realize that Carleton is a LA school. It’s a relief to know that not all the NMSF got mails from the school. We’ve been receiving mails from STEM schools and I guess my kid marked CS or other eng majors. Thank you very much everyone for saving me from another level anxiety. :)

I have an older son who is a National Merit Finalist and can say that this thread appears every year as long as college confidential has been in existence. Personally, I think they like the attention and would have tried to stop this thread a long time ago if they had an issue with it.

We are at a 219 in Ohio and just got official confirmation from DS’s high school. We are above the 217 reported here yesterday, so I knew, but there’s something about hearing it in person that brings relief.

CCDad, I didn’t follow this thread last year, but the previous year several pages were deleted by mods when they felt some things going on here were ‘out of bounds.’ It wasn’t NMSC’s doing AFAIK, but anyway it happened. It wasn’t because of idle chatter, but rather some more egregious posting of large amounts of specific info gleaned from NMSC’s ‘little book.’ So it’s good to be a bit careful. Someone was offering to send people screen shots of pages of names when messaged. Also gave the complete list of cut-off scores in one fell swoop.

Continued congratulations going out to all our NMSFs! It’s great to see the wonderful news coming in after all these months of waiting.

I also want to sincerely apologize to everyone for bringing up the Carleton mailing and giving anyone false hope. I’m feeling very deflated at the moment because I called Carleton this morning to ask about the postcard and what it meant. (Apparently I am not the only parent who called them today!) It turns out that their wording was very poorly chosen (IMHO) and that - combined with the timing - made me, and others, think that Carleton had a list of NMSFs already. The nice lady I spoke with assured me that they did not, and I shared with her that the wording should have been much clearer because - the way I read the card - it implied that my DS had already made the Semi-Finalist hurdle and was now in consideration for NMS. The website link they provided on the postcard gave me the same impression. I was further bolstered in my hope because of a past CC thread where one college sent a mailing of this sort to DCs who turned out to be NMSFs (whether or not it was a coincidence, no one knew).

Anyway, I feel awful about this - for everyone I may have misled (and also for myself). I’ve done a good job of keeping my emotions in-check up until this happened, but I have to confess that I’m pretty sad at the moment. However, knowing what NMS would mean to our family, it makes me all the happier for those who are receiving NMSF notifications, espc. those who are in a position that their DCs can use the scholarships.

I will stay online as much as I can today and I’m rooting for everyone, espc my Bubble Friends.

GoAskDad

I agree the terms of use need to be followed and you wouldn’t want to violate someone’s privacy by issuing their names without consent. My impression of this thread is a lot of eager parents wanting to hear the lotto numbers to see if their son or daughter qualify for a four year scholarship from the colleges that provide them based on their National Merit standing. Some of those scholarships are worth 100k or more. My current high school senior is on the bubble (one lower than last years cut off) so I will post his result if I get it. I’m not worried about making some illegal ‘announcement’ ahead of time. I like to live dangerously and have been known to run with scissors or rip the tags off of mattress covers on occasion.

FYI - post 1619 is an Oregon student who was notified they qualified with a 222
