Class of 2017 -- Celebrate, Vent, Discuss, etc.

Congrats Ugadog on your D’s decision! She ended up with a great list of schools to choose from!

Congrats to all who got where they wanted to go!

We’re celebrating this week as well. Our D got the call from Pace for the BFA Film TV program. She spent some time on the waitlist and they called Monday with an offer.

Absolutely thrilled. Perfect fit for her from a student/faculty/program standpoint especially since her ultimate goal is film and TV.

Lesson we learned: Kids DO make it off the waitlist!

Nice, congratulations to you and your daughter.

Congratulations, hdparker!! And Ugadog, my D will be uber-jealous!!! She loves that play!! So glad your D found the perfect spot!

HDParker, I just want to wholeheartedly congratulate you and your daughter on her journey and ultimate placement in her perfect fit program. You know we are green with envy but just very happy for you guys and wish her the best of luck.

Thanks a lot, gang.

M2G, hang in there. You guys do have a pretty good option in PPU. Really good program.

Hoping the best for you.

Well my D has been so stressed on making this decision. She is so afraid of making the wrong one. Last week she sat in on SUNY Purchase classes and just didn’t get the same feel from the faculty as she did from Rutgers Mason Gross. Juilliard sent her a letter giving her a waitlist status that three people didnt commit yet. Then the next day she knew of one that committed that day. So I am sure that’s out. London callbacks at the end of May. She is so torn. But looks like Mason Gross is the one. She did get a scholarship there which makes it more affordable but not as affordable as SUNY. We are all hoping she will be happy in the long run. This has been such a long, grueling process.

Actingmom, your daughter has some wonderful options and I know she will find her place. It is hard to not stress when our kids are unsettled, I am so sorry.

Hdparker, congratulations!

Actingmom18, hang in there. I know it’s tough waiting this out. It actually feels odd to me that we have a decision and don’t have to worry about that part any longer. Very soon, you will feel the same, I’m sure.

Hdparker congrats about Pace. The program looks very good. Sorry we won’t see you at Marymount!

So we thought the stress was over in our house (except of course parental stress about the cost of NYU) but now UNCSA has thrown my S a curveball, which is a great dilemma to have! There have been some insightful posts on both NYU ad NCSA on cc, but if anyone wants to weigh in on choice between two totally different universities and programs, we’d be interested in hearing opinions…

^^ditto- would love to hear comparisons of these two as well. My take is that the most obvious difference is vastly different settings of course-which I think is probably THE major difference. UNCSA is proud of an outstanding internship placement rate and they seem to maintain great connections in NYC and I think bring students there during the year. They have a wonderful track record of success also in terms of alumni, however folks want to track or define that. It is a much, much smaller school although I think the studio system at NYU helps create that feeling of a more personal and intimate experience. But, i would think the the lifestyle/locale component of it is significant. It’s not that easy to get to and while the relative quiet of the campus will be wonderful for many students, I am guessing others may feel isolated or frustrated by the lack of more social and entertainment options. Then again, maybe that’s a good thing? Haha! I know their design concentration is amazing and they produce stellar designers and have a fantastic inventory of equipment and the latest technology. I do not know much about the training for actors. NYU does have more general education requirements than UNCSA, but I really have found that NYU actually has far less than a number of other programs and are very much in the conservatory model. I am not sure what the options are for a minor at UNCSA- I think it may be a second concentration within the school of drama. We’re looking at a choice between these two as well so I would really appreciate any insights from others too! Would love to know more about what life is like in WS.

Maybe you should start a thread or find an existing thread asking about these two schools to get more input. I can answer questions about NYU. These schools are polar opposites IMHO. Both excellent, but each gives a totally different experience.

Congrats on another great acceptance! It’s weird how quickly they are going to their wait list!

I would actually like to know as well. My DS will be applying to both of these next year and I think they are polar opposites as well.

What’s interesting is that it seems there is A LOT of acceptance crossover between these 2 schools. So even though they are incredibly different, they obviously “like” the same people.

I wonder how two schools could be any different? He chose to apply to both for reasons, so he’ll have to revisit that list, consider the pros and cons of each and decide where he will learn and contribute the most. A tough decision for anyone. Am just hoping to be able to foster the conversation so that he makes a choice he is happy with. There really isn’t a bad choice here, just very different choices.

I didn’t want to start a new thread because Emmybet noted in some previous thread that the choices? Threads tended to rehash info already embedded in this forum. She’s right. I just wanted to “vent, discuss!” Without boring too many people :)

UVaHoo - ActingDad might be a great resource for you. His daughter is going to UNCSA and also was waitlisted at NYU so he is familiar with both schools.

Did your son get off the wait list at UNCSA?

Okay. If there is anything specifically you want to know about NYU let me know. I know fishfreshman knows a lot about UNCSA. Maybe she will join in.

They both are considered top programs. Uncsa is a true conservatory. NYU is a conservatory 3 days a week and an academic university 2 days per week.
I guess what your son will have to figure out is:
Does he want a big school or a small school?
A university or an arts school?
East coast or south?
Greenwich Village NYC or ? ( I have no idea where it is specifically  )
Does he want to be with the same 20 people for 4 years? Or does he want to be with new people each year? (The people in your studio classes change each year.)
Does he want to take academics? Minor, double major?
study abroad? (I don’t know if you can at UNCSA. )

Has he visited both?

( I cross posted with photomom5)

Actingdad has already been a fabulous resource. Thanks! His post on observations of UNCSA is terrific. Thanks for that list of questions as well mommy5. S will definitely review it as he makes his decision. It will be an exercise in self discovery …

Do you want to pay 70K a year or 30K a year?  (sorry, I could not help myself with that one; of course that assumes no financial aid)

Since the Village versus Winston-Salem is a heavy tilt to NYU. I hope my NYU friends won’t mind if I plug what I see is some of the positive distinctions at UNCSA to counter that tilt. All students are in the showcase. Studio hours that run 10 or 11 to 6 M-F – sleep optional program for sure. A major classical emphasis with second year significantly devoted to it. Singing and Dance integrated into acting program for all students. Oh, and Krankies is a really cool coffee shop just off campus.
