Class of 2017 Hopefuls!

Just got my glasses today! And had my interview on Sunday, went great :)

had my interview on campus. lasted for an hour, I thought it went pretty well but you never know… it was mainly why chicago and who am I as a person. Funny, because I was preparing for these totally crazy questions and they all turned out to be pretty standard ones.

My on-campus interview was about 45 min. The beginning my interviewer just asked some standard questions and just said “Okay, Cool, Awesome” after my answers. When I got to ask her questions though it became more of a conversation. Not sure how it went overall then…

I don’t know about you guys, but basically twenty people from my school applied early action. It’s going to suck when everyone starts bragging about their acceptance letters (or whining about rejections…).

@soyamoo: My school graduates a plethora of IB Diploma kiddies each year. Lots of my friends/acquaintances applied EA and ED to various top-tier schools including UChicago. December is going to be rather painful for everyone, I think.

EDIT: and hullo, fellow applicant from Washington State! :)

Not to freak anyone out but…
UChicago apparently published that there was a ~20% rise in Early Applicants this year. Based on last year’s stats that’s around 10,000 EAs. Good Luck to all =)

@psychedelia

Washingtonians unite! Do you happen to go to Interlake? That’s the only IB diploma HS I know of. If so, I’ve definitely heard about the pressure cooker environment there!

1) WI
2) Oct. 23
3) About 20 hours
4) YES!
5) Waldo
6) Waldo
7) Public Policy
8) Come on haha
9) 10. and a half.

@soyamoo: not Interlake. My high school’s just as much as a pressure cooker, though.

washingtonians, you should definitely talk to holly bland if you haven’t already. she loves her pnw applicants!

So, when do we hear back?

I have a question.

Was I supposed to attach my parents income tax returns with the ISFAA?

It says on the ISFAA to attach it but I couldnt find an option in the dropdown on my UChicago account for Income tax returns. Should I just upload the tax returns as “foreign financial aid”?

I asked UChicago for this 2 days ago but still no response. I think Ill call them today and see what happens.

Getting excited…only a couple more weeks!

jackrabbit420: I was in the same situation. I just faxed mine in and they received it within a day. Make sure you follow the instructions they give you. My parents forgot to sign on one page, so I had to resubmit it!

Hi everyone!
I couldn’t find the numbered list thing everyone was filling in before, but whatever.
I’m a Caucasian girl in Oregon applying (applied?) EA to my top choice, UChicago. I wrote on the Waldo essay prompt. I am confident that my essay is one of the greatest things I’ve ever written and I am fairly certain I had, well, a much craftier idea than the general pool. That being said, my stats are a far cry from competitive, so my dreams will likely end up dashed.

If they’re as holistic as they claim, I have a fighting chance; if not, I’m doomed.

Answer these questions : D

 1. Where you’re from: TX
 2. When you submitted your application: Nov 1st
 3. How long/hard you WORKED on your app (very applicable for UChicago :P): short time period/ intense work. Well, the thinking required most of the “work.”
 4. Did you do the optional favorites essay?: no

2) When you submitted your application: I don’t remember. xD
3) How long/hard you WORKED on your app (very applicable for UChicago :P): the main essay took me a while, but I rushed through the Why UChicago (but I still like it), and reused for the optional essay.
4) Did you do the optional favorites essay?: yes
5) The topic you chose for your creative essay?: Arch-nemesis one
6) In your opinion, which was your best essay?: Why UChicago, I think :3
7) What you want to major in: Computer Science
8) Whether Chicago’s a safety/likely/reach school for you: UCHICAGO IS A SAFETY/LIKELY FOR NO ONE.
9) How badly do you want to go on a scale of 1 to 10?: Want to be accepted? 10. Want to go? about an 8.

schmalia, UChicago is probably the most holistic university in top 15 schools. Essays are more important than GPA or SAT/ACT which came as a surprise to me as well. Of course you won’t have a decent shot if your GPA and SAT are too low but below-average scores can definitely be covered by great essay.

1) Where you’re from: Long Island
2) When you submitted your application: Oct 1st
3) How long/hard you WORKED on your app (very applicable for UChicago :P): I worked pretty hard on it…but there are lots of things I regret because I did my app so early… I learned a lot of things during the application process. Nonetheless I am still pleased with my application in general.
4) Did you do the optional favorites essay?: yes!!
5) The topic you chose for your creative essay?: Waldo <3
6) In your opinion, which was your best essay?: Waldo…I guess. The optional one also showed who I am as a person and it was honest so…I really liked that too.
7) What you want to major in: Chemistry…/premed program
8) Whether Chicago’s a safety/likely/reach school for you: it’s a super duper reach
9) How badly do you want to go on a scale of 1 to 10?: probably googolplex

1) Where you’re from: Maryland
2) When you submitted your application: Nov 9th (Sandy delay)
3) How long/hard you WORKED on your app (very applicable for UChicago :P): I worked for a while on it, then a power surge destroyed my computer… So I ended up rewriting everything from my common app activity statement to my waldo essay in about a week
4) Did you do the optional favorites essay?: yes, very informally though
5) The topic you chose for your creative essay?: Waldo of course
6) In your opinion, which was your best essay?: Waldo. That one allowed the most freedom to take the essay where I wanted it to go, which was neuroscience and philosophy
7) What you want to major in: neuroscience and philosophy :stuck_out_tongue:
8) Whether Chicago’s a safety/likely/reach school for you: haha if anyone puts safety im going to find out where you live
9) How badly do you want to go on a scale of 1 to 10?: i still havent visited, so i cant say definitively yet, but id say above 8
