@ewtoast I feel the same exact way! A lot of people were notified in my state very quickly, but no one from my school yet. I think a lot of the people that heard back right away may have been SCEA?

ewtoast - Of course you can feel any way you want, but Tulane says very clearly they will give EA/SCEA applicants a decision by December 15. Obviously there are many students they feel comfortable reaching a decision on earlier (although not always an acceptance) and others they don’t. But exactly how has Tulane not done something they promised? Do you really think all student applications are the same?

I am not trying to be combative or derisive, I am just pointing out that you placed expectations on the process that Tulane never offered and that cannot be inferred will happen to you because of other results.

I just wanted to hear someone’s opinion. In my school all the students with low gpas who applied single choice got in. However, every applicant who applied early action with substantially better grades got deferred (this number is around 14 who got deferred and 3 who got in single choice). I was one who got deferred with much better grades. Does anyone know why this could have occurred?

P.S. I understand some do not get in because Tulane tries to figure out who is really interested but the chances of that many kids all getting deferred from one school sounds odd to me.

hard to know if you don’t know their sat or act scores, community service and ec’s

Just an opinion, of course, but maybe based on prior history there isn’t a great record of highest stat students from your school actually choosing Tulane. As has been said many times on here, there are more factors than grades involved. There are test scores, demonstrated interest, EC’s, perceived fit, etc. One has to try and imagine what an admissions officer is thinking when looking at all that together, which is impossible when you cannot see the whole file and since we cannot know what Tulane thinks they “need” for the incoming class.

@fallenchemist Is merit aid unlikely for deferred applicants who get admitted during the regular decision cycle, or would you say they have the same chance of merit $$ as if they’d been admitted during the EA period? Is most of the merit aid “used up” by the time RD rolls around?

Chances for merit aid should be similar if you get in during the RD round. Once Tulane decides to make an offer of admission, they are saying they hope that you attend. It isn’t that they want you less because they deferred you, it is just the reality that they have to make tough decisions on who it makes sense to offer admission to, and how much incentive it makes sense to offer so that the class doesn’t get too large. I am sure there are probably 4,000-5,000 students out of each applicant pool they would really like to have, but there is only space for about 1600. The amount of merit aid they will offer is not only based on stats, but on how much incentive they want to offer. That is true whether it is the early round or the later round.

So, for example, it looks like the class is going to be short on some particular talents, or likely majors, or something else that they know they would like to get more of, they might provide more incentive to those students. The definition of merit is not limited to stats, although they will always play a big role.

That is how it has always seemed to me, anyway.

It has been fascinating following this thread over the past few weeks. My D was admitted in November, abt two weeks after complete app. She received the distinguished student scholarship. Her stats could have gone either way. Not sure what tipped the balance. Visited Tulane and her why Tulane described the visit in her words and exactly as it happened. It was a great visit. I think her personal statement was awesome but what parent doesn’t.
Thanks FC! I have lurked on many cc sites and there is no one like you. BTW… You are correct about Chapel Hill…18%from OOS including atheletes and international.

Thanks Stilltay. Congrats on the scholarship! That is big bucks. Sounds like her Why Tulane was personal and genuine. That is the best kind.

Good to know about UNC-CH. I wonder how many other states have statutory limits like that. It becomes a more interesting question in these times of some state schools supposedly trying to get the increased income from taking more OOS students. But that discussion is for another thread.

It is discussion for another thread and don’t get me started! We of the state with hope scholarship (nice) which sends everyone to school in GA. (good if you want to stay instate or like uga/georgia tech). I know it sounds dumb to thumb your nose at that, but she visited, and wanted to like both of those schools. But did not.

Since I like to hear about other kids’ merit and stats to get better idea as to what to expect I will post here as well…paying it forward so to speak

Wrote Why Tulane Essay, no idea whether it was good … he had never shown me any of his apps
Expressed interest by being in contact with Ad counselor via email and at HS Presentation; has sibling at Tulane
Tulane is definitely high on on our list. He has so far 2 other admissions, both also Honors, one with free tuition (Alabama)… He still wants to hear from the UC’s and USC before making a decision even though we are trying to talk him out of UCs, and USC’s merit aid would not be good given that it is about 5 miles from our house…so we are not really that interesting for them.
We will visit with him in Feb Tulane when we will also visit Alabama and Miami…but there may be a good chance that he will join his sis.
Good luck to those who have not heard or are being deferred for the time being. Rest assured that last year plenty of kids got in RD and they will got merit money, it’s not limited to EA.

oops forgot to mention the merit aid
Distinguished Scholar (25K/year) and invite to Honors

@calmom. My D would get free tuition at Alabama as well. Can’t exactly tell where you are from… California? We visited there (Bama) and it is all about football and instead of hello it’s roll tide! They love the high test scores to offset those that are not.

Obviously just a personal, strong opinion I have, but I really believe going to school that close to home (5 miles) is not a good way to go. I know with some families going locally is the only option, and in those cases of course it is better than not going to college at all. But when there are options, I think going away to school, and especially to a completely new environment, is such an advantage to gaining maturity.

Like I said, just my opinion based on personal observations. Congrats on the great scholarships.

How long does the merit aid letter take to come in? a week or so?

@stillray
Don’t dismiss Bama so easily. Almost 200 NMF attended last year, and similar numbers have been for years, mostly from kids with similar or better stats than my son. They have a very strong Honors program and it does compete with schools like Tulane.
We visited Alabama last year with our daughter and the Honors College at Alabama was phenomenal…You should have scheduled your visit through the Honors College and you would have seen a total different pic of Alabama. BTW, they have a STEM to MBA program which would be great for my son who will be premed…It was by a whisker that my daughter chose Tulane over Alabama Honors. I think she would have been happy at either school. She is happy at Tulane, but it is definitely more money than Alabama would have been. She got the 20K award and would have paid 8K in tuition at Alabama (2/3 off). My son will be premed, so we need to keep costs low since we want to help him with med school if possible. He will apply for the other Tulane Scholarships as well, see whether we can get a little more help.
Also, while we have seen both Alabama and Tulane, my son has not seen either…so we have to see what he likes better and whether he would be willing to take on more loans for med schools…we told all our kids (3) that we will pay for approximately the same amount for their college, the rest is their responsibility. if he saves on undergraduate, we will/can help with graduate…if not…he will be on his own for grad/prof school. It will be our son’s decision.
We have not seen Miami…we just applied since my son refused to apply anywhere where it’s cold, and Miami also has good premed program… Heard merit aid is not that great there compared to Tulane…we will wait and see, knowing that we have already several good options, and Tulane would be fun and make logistics a lot easier with 2 kids there…:-)

@fallenchemist
totally agree with going to school so close to home… I would definitely advise against it. USC is really big here alumni network wise, so if you want to work locally in SoCal, either in business or architecture etc, there is something to be said for USC…they will definitely help you. However, my son wants to go premed…who knows where he will go to med school… the alumni network connection is less of an issue for a premed kid.

Sorry calmom
My neighbors are both alabama grads and loved it. Their D1 is a senior there and I know they are regretting not looking elsewhere although she is ok now. Bad experience Greek wise first year and don’t like the boyfriend. D2 is at charleston.

taylorjacqueline- I never even checked Gibson. I found out solely through the mail, and yes, my merit aid info was included in that same letter. It should be there soon for you! My letter was dated November 25th and I received it on December 2nd. Best of luck regarding scholarships!

@bromar333
we found out on Gibson on Friday and letter was in today’s mail…so it comes rather quickly…congrats and I wish you the best with merit aid. As you know on average the aid is about 21K (merit or needs based or combination thereof).
