Class of 2018 Decisions

…just registered to post my stats because this forum helped me out a lot

Found out last night at like 10pm (I’ve been checking every hour) that I got deferred. I’m disappointed but not surprised, my “Why Tulane” essay was really just a few sentences and I applied on a whim.

30 ACT
3.70 GPA
Great EC’s
I think I am going to redo my application and hopefully get in for regular decision. I wish I put more time into my application because now that I’ve researched the school I think I would really love to go there.

135pipe your stats show that you’re very well accomplished, and your rank and GPA show you’ve done well in high school. While your ACT is on the lower side for Tulane, you can improve it for the RD round. You don’t list your SAT, maybe send that as well? Also, how much interest did you show? Did you do your Why Tulane essay, and communicate with your admissions rep? These things are all taken into account. I think with an improved ACT/SAT and if you demonstrate enough interest, your stats certainly reflect that you’re deserving of admission.

Yea it am taking my sat again to get in the 1900s and I am also re doing my essays if possible. I have shown a lot of interest my contacting them, abd thanking then, and also saying that I would love to be considered for Tulane.

I applied EA at the end of October and am still waiting for a decision. I plan to email my counselor today to reiterate my interest in Tulane. Any suggestions as to what I should say?

I would email counselor and reiterate that Tulane is your top choice and that you plan to attend if accepted. I don’t understand how anyone can reach out and ask to be accepted if they aren’t sure that they will attend.

I feel like some people on this thread are simply offended that they were deferred because they think that their stats are so good. Numbers OBVIOUSLY aren’t everything to Tulane.

Kenny,

First, not everyone is in the position to write a $60K+ check. So they can’t say with 100% confidence that they will attend if accepted. They can definetly say they would attend if they can afford to do so after the merit and FA is finalized. Congrats to you if your folks can simply write a check!

Second, I see more disappointment from the deferred kids than I do resentment.

1990 SAT
3.7 GPA

Deferred. Pretty screwed lol. It wasn’t really my top choice though, but I think it is bad news for the future.

I just don’t see how you ask a college counselor to accept you instead of someone else (because everyone can’t get accepted) but oops sorry i will only go if I can get money. The reason SCEA isn’t binding is because Tulane knows some people who get scholarships elsewhere may not attend Tulane.

And fyi my parents told me what they can afford to spend and that if Tulane was truly my choice I would have to take a loan.

I opted for the loan and got a job.

Egonomics - It isn’t necessarily bad news for other apps at all. Every admissions office looks for different things, so there is little correlation between a Tulane decision and any others you are waiting for.

Kenny - I understand where you are coming from, and I think in a sense you and BigDaddy are saying the same thing. I say that because Tulane is need-blind for admissions, and also because it is essentially understood by admissions that finances are a major factor. So when someone says “I really want to attend Tulane more than any other school” or something similar, it goes without saying that you mean that IF you can afford it. Of course you can also just come out and say that, but it is pretty much the same whether you do say it or leave it as understood. The exception would be saying “I want Tulane more than any other school, and finances are not an issue”.

That is one reason why ED raises such a debate. Schools are essentially asking students to commit without knowing what the FA packages look like. Of course if one is accepted ED at some school and it turns out you cannot afford it, they cannot make you attend. But it discourages lower income families from applying ED (which is generally an advantage), no matter that these schools often say “Don’t worry, we will make it affordable”. For that reason and a few others that are related, many schools dropped ED a while back, but some have reinstated it because they felt they were at a disadvantage against schools that didn’t drop it.

Anyway, I tend to agree that, putting finances aside, if Tulane isn’t a top choice (and by top I mean top 2-3), then it really shouldn’t matter too much if you get deferred. Certainly for Tulane it becomes a good decision.

Does Tulane even reject anyone? Or do they just defer all of them?

At this stage they tend to defer people, as they see how things shape up come closer to the April 1 deadline. I won’t say they don’t deny admission to anyone at this stage. I can’t know that but I suspect there are some applicants that clearly would never get admitted and so do get denied at this stage. Certainly at the end of the RD stage people do get denied admission.

Just got my acceptance today!

Does anyone know about scholarships? Is it too late to apply? Or does information come when we receive the admitted students packet?

Congrats on your accomplishments Bayarea! That is so amazing!

Did you find out about the merit aid in the letter? Or was it posted to the Gibson site??

Thanks!

You will get a letter a few days after the Gibson notice. It will apprise you of any merit award you are offered. Congrats!

taylor - Congrats! You are automatically considered for scholarships ranging from $10K-$30K. If you do get one of these, it will be in the paper letter, not on Gibson. For full tuition scholarships or more, you need to apply separately. However, these applications are due December 15. There is also the Community Service Scholarship ($20K and can be added to any of the “automatic” scholarships up to the amount of tuition) which is due January 15.

Thanks for the help!
I’m excited to see what my letter holds!(:
And to newjersey17-- I actually could not find the Gibson email. I ended up emailing my counselor at Tulane directly and we worked the problem out while I was at school today. But thank you to everyone for the help!
I will have to look into the Paul Tulane Award quickly!

relieved to know I am not the only one that has been waiting since October… I guess we have all been waiting so long that one week seems like nothing at this point! Now it is just scary to know the decision is so close by.

Here is a new posting on Jeff Schiffman’s blog just for you students that have been deferred. Actually it is something he has posted before to which I have given the link, but this may contain some updates, although it looks very similar. [Tulane University Admission Blog - Jeff: I’ve Been Deferred. Now What?](Tulane University Admission Blog - Jeff Schiffman: I've Been Deferred. Now What?)

I’ve been waiting since the last week of October. At this point I’m just irritated, especially after hearing that so many people were notified within 2 weeks.
