I emailed admissions in regards to updated one of essays, and i also weirdly heard within the same day (when I most likely wouldn’t have heard for another week or two). I believe that if you contact them, your decision will be posted sooner!

Got deferred
ACT: 30
GPA: 3.4 uw/ 4.0w
AP: psych 4/ AP Envi Sci 3
Captain of rugby and swim team, varsity swimming and rugby 4 years. A volunteer organization that helps around school I put about 3 hours into each week. Spent 6 weeks in India and 6 weeks in Thailand. Work at a clothing shop.

Im pretty upset I got deferred, I knew that Tulane was a stretch but I had hope. I really want to major in Asian studies and Tulane is one of the only southern schools that offers it. I guess ill keep in touch with my admissions officer and hope to be accepted RD.

jackerman - I would really emphasize your point about wanting Asian Studies and a southern school when you stay in touch. Seems to me, anyway, that would be something specific in your favor. Is India the country of emphasis you would pick for your major? If so, I am not as familiar with Tulane’s strength for that. I know they are strong in Japan and Vietnam, and getting much stronger in China.

Got deferred today! It was completely expected with my stats. It’s ok though:) to all the people who were deferred hopefully you get in RD!

I was deferred today as well. I was, however, accepted ED to WashU in St. Louis, so I can’t say that I’m too upset about it ;)

I found this thread really helpful throughout the application process, so I thought I’d provide my stats to add some perspective. Thanks especially to fallenchemist-- even though I won’t be attending Tulane, your posts have been really great and informative.

2320 SAT (800 CR, 720 M, 800 W)
3.9 GPA
I think I wrote a great personal statement and Why Tulane essay. I talked about some of their service learning programs that I found really interesting.
Amazing teacher and counselor recs.
Quite a few ECs-- Most major are two unpaid science-related internships. I’ve published research in both state and national scientific journals, won several awards, and have been invited to present at state/national level conferences. I’m president of Model UN, debate, and a school chapter of a local charity. 100+ volunteer hours and competitive horseback riding all throughout high school.

I would assume the deferral is a result of a lack of demonstrated interest-- I never visited or attended any info sessions. I did exchange a couple emails with my admissions counselor, but I guess that wasn’t enough.

Anyway, congratulations to all who were accepted!

Thanks for the shout-out DancingK, and super congrats on WUSTL ED!! As you probably saw from some of my posts on here, I know that school pretty well and think it is truly outstanding. I am sure you will love it.

I think your case just really shows how well the admissions office does in determining when a student is much more likely to go elsewhere. You have a fantastic resume and did the Why Tulane, but still it must have been abundantly clear to them that you were looking elsewhere with greater interest. I am not saying they know 100% of the time, but yours is hardly the first example of this.

It should also give some comfort to those who posted they were worried that a deferral at Tulane meant they might be in trouble with their other applications. Clearly not the case!!

I’m not sure if anyone would know the answer to this question, but I’ll give it a shot. Out of the entire freshman class at Tulane, roughly how many are athletes that didn’t have to apply?

By “didn’t have to apply” I assume you mean students that were offered full athletic scholarships. I think technically all have to apply, and certainly there are minimum NCAA standards that have to be met in terms of grades and test scores, and Tulane probably has higher standards they enforce on themselves. At least listening to Coach Johnson frequently talk about only recruiting athletes that can succeed at Tulane as students gives that impression.

Tulane reports that last year’s class had 43 freshmen that received athletic grants and that there are 173 for all undergrads. These are not all full athletic scholarships. I am not sure there is a way to know the breakdown of how many receive full scholarships and how many are partial athletic scholarships. Judging by the $$ amount these are reported to be worth (about $9.36MM in total) and using a total attendance cost of $60,000 they seem to be mostly full scholarships. Because $9.36MM/$60,000 = 156 full scholarships. So without doing the math, there might be about 120 full ones and 53 partials, or something like that.

Deferred!

Best of luck to everyone. We are moving on!

Special thanks to FC. Best source on CC!

It occurs to me that there might only be two levels of athletic scholarship, full and half. IF that is correct, then it is easy to figure out that the $9.36MM is comprised of 139 full scholarships and 34 half ones, assuming a full is worth $60K and half $30K. So that is about a 4:1 ratio of full to half, so about 34-35 people in the freshman class would be on full athletic scholarship and 8 or 9 on half scholarships, using my assumptions.

bigdaddy - sorry to hear that, but obviously she has numerous excellent schools she will get into. I enjoyed our conversations very much. Let us know if anything changes and she gets into Tulane. For that matter, let us know where she ends up if it is elsewhere.

wow I’m starting to get worried there are some people with really good profiles who have gotten deferred…its weird though because a couple of kids at my school who have lower scores or gpa’s than me got accepted…i guess they put a lot of value into the essay

haha - read back over the last 4-5 pages of this thread. You will see the discussion that answers your thoughts.

accepted!! like others I wanted to post my stats to give other viewers an idea of what kind of grades and other stuff I had that got me accepted
