Class of 2018 Decisions

@135pipe - I am very glad to hear you have two excellent choices. The rankings are completely meaningless, but those schools do offer fine opportunities. Of course they are so different than Tulane, not the least of which is New Orleans vs. Gainesville or State College, as you say. But if it isn’t going to be Tulane, at least you will be someplace where you can do well. Best of luck!!

Yea ); waiting on my appeal to ut austin in state and nyu

My daughter got waitlisted. What are the chances they’ll clear her? Any takers?

Look at my posts on this thread <a href=“Deferred Early Action from Tulane - #151 by newjersey17 - Tulane University - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/tulane-university/1588953-deferred-early-action-from-tulane-p11.html</a></p>

Thank you fallenchemist…very valuable info…

ACT 35 (English 36, Math 36, Reading 34, Science 33)
Superscored: 36 (E36, M36, R36, S35)
SAT: 2340 (CR740 M800, W800)

GPA: 3.9 (w/o outofcountry grades)
EC’s: internship at local university, lot’s of science/music related activities (musical, music club, volunteering), solid leadership positions at clubs and outisde organizations, financial hardship demonstrated, etc.

I feel like there’s some Tufts syndrome going on… I did write the Why Tulane essay, my rec’s were presumably strong, essay was good… -___- so many waitlists going on atm don’t know why

Let me ask you this, @AkLvKk: Where are you going to school come fall?

I just got waitlisted as well. I have great ECs and essays, 3.9 GPA (4.5 weighted), 800 CR/680 M/800 W on the SAT, so I figured my chances were awesome. Admittedly, I didn’t put that much effort into the application-- it was free, and I figured I may as well add another safety school. This is what I get for overconfidence. ;)

My S applied EA and was admitted in November. 4.35 GPA weighted, 32 ACT, 5s on APs, good ECs - he really put a helluva lot of effort into his Why Tulane essay, talking about what impressed him about the school and his favorite places in NOLA. His brother is an alum and is graduating law school there in May, and we have visited a lot. Tulane has been his #1 choice for a while, and I think his application reflected that. He did apply to a few other schools, but I think he realized after reading his Tulane application that it was the place he felt most at home. His financial aid offer was exactly what was predicted on the NPC; he has a decent merit award, along with a grant and WS, but is working hard at scholarship apps to reduce the loan component. Although it would have been great from a parents’ point of view had he been accepted at one of the two lottery schools he applied to (his sister attends Vandy, which is no-loan after EFC, and she gets a near free ride, but he wasn’t interested in Nashville), his heart was set on Tulane, and I feel good about him going there. His brother, who is a great support person, will be staying in NOLA, and has already given him some terrific advice on dorms and such. He is going down to NOLA for the Top Scholars weekend (formerly Honor’s Weekend when his brother went) and will submit his deposit soon. And although he is excited, I think he is realistic about the school and knows that he will get back from the experience what he puts in. He also knows how hard it is going to be to stay in Honors taking pre-Med courses, but he is committed. Anyway, I see that some folks with very impressive stats have been wait-listed, but I do think the school wants people there who really want to be at Tulane and will add something to the school. It is a pretty neat place. Looking forward to visiting him this fall and seeing a football game in the new stadium. And going there in May for S1’s law school graduation is going to be very special. So for the 8th year straight, I’ll get to be a Tulane parent!

Congrats, @Moonmaid. That’s very cool.

I have been lurking on this forum since my son applied last fall. I have learned so much - much thanks to fallenchemist and all the insight provided. Tulane has made him feel wanted from the very beginning and that goes a long way for both him and his parents. We will be visiting in April over our spring break. I can’t wait for him to see the campus and find out if Tulane is the right fit for him. You all are a tremendous resource and I hope to become a regular on here.

Very exciting! Hope you enjoy your visit and please come back and let us know how it was! If you have any question please ask! Lots of parents with great information here!

Indeed! I may be the most verbose (what’s the writing equivalent of verbose?) but dolphnlvr and others have wonderful knowledge of New Orleans, Tulane and various aspects of the college process. A couple of them work for other colleges, so they really have some great comparative views.

I also hope you have a great trip, @6kids2boxers1cat (quite a screen name!). We would love to have you as a regular on here as part of our little “family”.

Will do @dolphnlvr6 and @fallenchemist and thanks for the warm welcome. He is my first of six so we are learning as we go. The process has changed from when I was a senior in high school so there have been quite a few eye openers! We are renting a house on the ocean about an hour away from New Orleans for a week. He couldn’t make the honors weekend so hopefully he will get a good feel for all that Tulane has to offer. And for my part…looking forward to spending time in New Orleans again!

6 kids!! My definition of a brave woman. You are so right about the process being very different than even 20 years ago. The internet, changing demographics, and a few other factors have altered the landscape significantly.

That’s a shame that the timing for Top Scholars Weekend didn’t work out, almost everyone comes away from that with praise. But I am sure you will get good insight into Tulane anyway. And spending a week on the gulf coast (I assume that is what you meant) is not shabby either. Very nice. My D had a friend whose family had a beach house and loved going there from time to time.

Are you going for a Destination Tulane session?

@fallenchemist well I just got accepted to Vassar, so I might go there–but decisions have yet to come out for Ivies and other matches/reaches so I’m still waiting

@AkLvKk - Congrats on Vassar! So let’s assume you get into two or three of the Ivy or other schools (Duke, Vandy, Stanford?) that you applied to. Would you have gone to Tulane given those acceptances?

And I am quite curious about your user name. What does it mean?

@6kids2boxers1cat that sounds so wonderful! And how smart to relax at the beach rather than trying to find a hotel in April in NOLA, one of the busiest months with Easter, FQF and JF!

@fallenchemist it all would have depended I guess, since I’m very sensitive to the financial aid packages and whatnot. I joined the waitlist formally for now, just in case. And thank you! :)

My User name stands for Alex Koo Loves Korean Kimchi. Just came up with it as a joke in middle school but it ended up being username for quite a while LOL

That’s funny. Well, let us know who else shows you some love besides Vassar and what you eventually decide.
