Class of 2018 (yikes!) - Sharing,Venting, Etc

Okay, seriously? I was 23 in '74. Had my baby close to 45th birthday! Dated Ben Vereen…okay, that part’s not true.

LOL @puma69 I was like Wait WHATT… you dated Ben Vereen, you totally got me :))

Yes @mtmom2015 I did graduate in '88!

Sorry to rain on everyone’s parade while many are having happy thoughts down memory lane. However, since this is also a venting page I must do so. So far rejections to ALL audition Schools! Still waiting on two more but not hopeful. Its so disappointing! Anyone else totally underestimate the competitiveness of this process? Safety schools are reach schools and reach schools are safety schools when it comes to BFA programs!! So disappointed and I feel D closed many opportunities to go to great academic schools because of this. Okay, Venting over…for now. :open_mouth:

YES, I feel your pain!! D applied to 21 schools!! So far, she received 1 BFA MT acceptance (Rider),
1 BFA MT waitlist (Emerson) , 1 BFA acting waitlist (Wisconsin, Steven’s Point), and 1 BA MT acceptance (Muhlenberg). She has been rejected (boy do I hate that word!) from the MT programs at Michigan, Penn State, FSU, Indiana (though may go there for the BA program), Pace, Northern Colorado, Ball State, Baldwin Wallace, Tulane, Ithaca, CCM and CMU (at least I think so, as we didn’t get a call). We are still waiting on JMU, NYU, Syracuse and Miami and HARTT.

I know that many people have already heard from Miami and Syracuse…don’t know if that means it’s over for us or if they are accepting students in waves?

When we began this process, we were told “oh…don’t worry, your D is so talented! She’ll get in to a lot of programs” I looked at the odds and decided to have her apply everywhere since each school only takes between 8 and 30 kids total. I’m glad I did!!!

You’ve earned the right to vent, Delfa307! Is your daughter disappointed too, or is she okay with her non-auditioned options? Sorry your experience has been so frustrating. The unpredictable timing of admissions news just adds to the frustration. :(

@Delfa307 im sorry things arent working out the way you hoped. you haven’t heard from two so your stikl in it. it only tskes onr. We too had no idea he only auditioned at 5 schools we had no idea. he has one acceptance one eait list and waiting on NyU. never imagined it was this competitive. i have taken the information i learned and shared it with the music director st his school. we didnt know about acting couches and audition coaches. he appreciated the information as he hsd no idea of the process. so hang in there everyone!!

Vent away Delfa307! Many of us who have read CC before the application and audition process knew from the threads that there may be no acceptances from audition schools, but when only no’s are coming (son had two months of no’s and an acceptance to his in-state in Maine) it is crushing. Don’t give up hope. After the long months of rejections, son received two acceptances on the same day. Keeping my fingers crossed for those who are still waiting that good news comes your way soon.

@Delfa307 - There are a lot more students in the same boat than you realize since people are more likely to excitedly tell of good news than bad (understandably so). My D applied to 4 BFA programs and 5 non-audition BA programs. Not only did she not get into any BFA programs, but she was waitlisted at two of the BA schools (one expected and the other a complete surprise). Thankfully two of her acceptances came last fall so she knew through all of the rejections that whatever happened she had some place to go. The process really takes these kids (and parents) on an emotional roller coaster!

@bwaybabie - Fingers crossed that your D’s last 5 schools all say yes. And congrats on Rider and Muhlenberg, both great schools!

We had no idea what we were in for. We were adding schools as we went along, did some walk ins at Unifieds and then sent the common app in afterwards. We never heard of most of these schools. Hired an audition/acting coach in January and used her for three weeks. Send my son for three dance lessons as well last November for the first time. I felt every time we turned around we had something else to do and we were cramming. His prescreen was pretty funny. I told him, Id hire someone. S said, “Mom, I got it” His prescreen video had him standing behind his accompanist, so she and the piano were featured in it. That didn’t go over too well at the schools. Live and Learn…@Delfa307, its ridiculously competitive and worse so for girls. Wish you and D the best.

Did anyone receive their financial package from rider. I believe my D will be attending even tho we are waiting to hear from tisch. We are going Monday to rider so she can “spend a day with a musical theater student”. I believe emails or call for tisch are going out tomorrow after 3 pm.

@Delfa307 - nope…and even after reading about it, I started in August on this site, I still wasn’t prepared. You are not alone, its tough for boys, but seems near impossible for girls. So much plays into this, type, timing (which musicals are the schools doing next), piece selection (which was really hard for S), they get 4 minutes to get the panels attention and I have to believe luck comes in there somewhere… Best of luck to you and your D!

LOLOLOLOLOL @ puma69 dating Ben Vereen!!! You all are too funny!!

@Delfa307 I’m so sorry to hear your news. I’ve heard that every year it gets more comptitive, but this was the year of record applications/auditions with girls who were crazy talented! While my daughter has a couple of acceptances and a waitlist, the no’s were extremely tough especially when multiple no’s came in one week.

With that being said, the wait for FA is extremely painful!!! There’s only one school left, but I don’t feel that we’re anywhere near a final decision.

@delfa307 - vent away! It is a very difficult process. A friend’s daughter who previously said she wanted a BA for MT has decided now she wants a BFA. She is a junior. I am going to sit down with her in a couple of weeks and give her the low down. I will not be gentle about it either! They have to get started NOW, and they have to be relentless, and they have to be ready for a wild ride. I think it does help to have a better grasp of what it is in front of you than to be surprised and hurt along the way. She will probably think I am exaggerating, and if so in a year I can say, “I told you so!” But I hope she listens to me carefully.
I hope it works out for your D! Best wishes.

@Powermom, we are going to Rider Monday also for MT student for a day. We met with FA at an accepted student reception last week. Give them a call, they probably have it ready.

This thread is both scary and so helpful. My D is a junior and we have started with MTCA this week after reading CC. I think it is easy to get caught-up in the rejections but I want to train D that the acceptances are what counts.
My mantra will be “it only takes one.” I know that because of all of you so THANKS!!! And hang in there!

@Delfa307 – we had no idea how brutal this is either, and as I have vented before, my D didn’t help the situation by limiting her choices geographically and listening to her father the School Snob. D also blew some of her auditions by allowing herself to be intimidated by the other candidates at schools where the audition process is more or less a barbaric marathon open cattle call. D rejected by all except for AMDA MT, which is a fine program but not a college, so dad the School Snob isn’t keen. Haven’t heard from Pace, SUNY Purchase, The New School, or CMU, but at this point that means it’s over. She did just audition at the last minute at Molloy/CAP21. So except for that slim hope, it’s AMDA or be on the outside looking in at Wagner, which accepted her academically. Can’t believe it’s come down to this, after D’s spectacular high school career – but it has. At least this wonderful group has shown me that we’re not alone.

@dramamom0804 - My D is a junior and we’ve know and have already been working on this audition process but a boy in her HS has decided to pursue MT in college all of the sudden. He is definitely talented, so I have agreed to talk to him about the audition process. I know he will think I am exagerating, but all I have to do to prove him otherwise is refer him to CC and all of these wonderful threads. No one will doubt my assertions if they read all of your wonderful people’s personal journeys through this process, highs and lows included. That being said, I want to extend SUPER special THANKS to all of you who have been willing to share your disappointments and tough stories. Those are so much harder to share, but SO helpful to those of us going into this! It’s easy to rush and post about an acceptance or some happy story, but it takes such a GENEROUS HEART to be willing to share your lows for the benefit of others. I am humbled by your generosity and goodwill. Blessings to all of you and your S’s and D’s whatever life brings you!

I had no idea either. D applied to 15 schools. Only one BFA MT acceptance, one BM MT acceptance, and one waitlist from Tulane. Traveled to CCM, PACE, and FSU only to be rejected, and left paying the bills. D passed all prescreens with no problems, so she was confident going into this process. Now not so much. Still waiting on Hartt, Boco, NYU Steinhardt, Viterbo, and Otterbein. I think Viterbo and Otterbein have already sent out their acceptances. I knew this would be hard, but I had no idea of the level of competition. D is a strong legit soprano and a classically trained pre-professional ballerina, so yes, surprise surprise, not what they were looking for??? We were worried about the belting going in, although she can mix. How can you really know until you are in the middle of it all? PS Forgot to mention also that D has 32 ACT and a 4.0 so it is not the grades either. Everyone says that our kids will end up where they are supposed to be and that everything works out. We just have to believe it! Thanks everyone for all the support through this. I hope this crazy year will help those coming behind us.

@eastchestermom I feel very bad for your situation. After all the work and all the stress I can only imaging how you feel. We were scared to death when only NO’s started rolling in. D auditioned for over 20 programs, was accepted by 3, and is waiting to hear from 4 more.

Your situation is instructive for next year’s crop of students - forget about the top 10 lists, forget about school prestige - there is no place for school snobbery in MT. Out in the real world the casting directors don’t really care IF you went to school, let alone WHERE you went to school.

We know that our D was very lucky to get 3 offers, and none of them were from schools that show up on the CC boards. In fact, 2 of them were from walk-ins during Chicago. At first we kind of felt like she was an also-ran because the schools don’t have their own thread on CC, but after visiting the schools we can see that they each have plenty to offer in their own way. When we read about situations like yours we are even more grateful to be in this position.

Although AMADA is not a degree program you have to decide which is more important - the degree or the training. If her career goal is truly a life in MT, then I would argue that the training is more important. Their curriculum looks just as varied and intensive as any other conservatory in the country. She’ll start making contacts in the business right away, and she’ll start her career 2 years ahead of her peers. They have a solid record of alumni success - Jesse Tyler Ferguson of Modern Family is an AMDA MT grad.

Best of luck to you and your D.
