Class of 2018 (yikes!) - Sharing,Venting, Etc

If I knew what they were looking for, I’d quit my job and become a filthy rich coach/psychic. My D is not a strong dancer, but she can belt her lungs out, soprano and alto. I happened to overhear her vocal audition at CMU, and she knocked it out of the park…but it was still no. And she is tall, thin, blond and gorgeous – your basic nightmare, as Carrie Fisher said in “When Harry Met Sally” --.but it was still no. If she’s not what they’re looking for, OK I get it, but all the no’s took a real toll on her confidence.

@cheeseheadmike – I don’t watch Modern Family, so I didn’t know that, but the great Tyne Daly is also an AMDA grad…and AMDA is a real possibility, Dad the School Snob notwithstanding! You can also get into the New School BFA MT from AMDA’s Integrated program – in fact, that’s the only way in, according to TNS website. Or you can go to AMDA’s LA campus and finish up there. Believe me, D is very interested.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson was also Leaf Coneybear in Broadway cast of “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee”.

Now that this process is drawing to a close for the Class of 2018, I just wanted to thank everyone on this thread for their insight. My D suffered a bad injury during a dance rehearsal in the fall and it forced her to miss most of the MT audition season. We had planned on everything except for an injury. We were forced to become school snobs and streamline the audition schedule. All the comments and advice on this thread was very helpful in this process. Best of luck to all your kids no matter where this crazy MT major takes them in life. I look forward to seeing them all on stage.

@addicted2MT - I just had a similar experience - met a mom of a Junior boy that walked off the LaCrosse field and auditioned for his HS musical - got the lead - and caught the bug. He has since quit all sports teams to put all his energy into prepping for auditions next year. (Which I think says a LOT about his commitment!) I’ve had several long convos with his mom about getting him in to dance ASAP, and sending them to the “I Got In” book - and here to read these boards! I planted the seed that a Gap year might be necessary for him to be fully prepared.

I always feel so bad when I hear that someone has “just decided” to pursue MT. Usually they don’t take the time to find out what they are up against. Several of D’s HS friends have decided at the last minute that they’d like to major in MT - but they don’t understand the pool that they are up against - and the acceptance numbers. The three I know personally all only auditioned at one school - the school they already planned to attend - and all are pursuing other majors at those schools! Well - there is ONE happy ending - one friend reauditioned for straight acting at the end of her freshman year - and is now working towards a BFA in Acting!

@blueraiderdad – I am sorry to hear of your D’s injury…I hope she has recovered! Disappointed as my D is, at least only her pride has been hurt.

I must say that I have been humbled by all your responses and glad that I am not alone. D is somewhat of a “school snob” herself and did not audition to many schools despite my insistence that MT college process is very different from the regular college process. Only 6 audition schools and all top tier schools. She probably would have had better odds if she had only applied to Harvard, Yale and Princeton!! She does have some regret now because she could have casted a wider net or considered some very good BA MT or acting programs. She is still waiting on two schools but some of the acceptances already went out so I think they all tend to send the rejections and Wait Lists after they send the acceptances. At this point, being wait listed to any school would be pretty sweet at this point! Its not over til its over. Best luck to those still waiting and hanging on by a thread like us…

@blueraiderdad - also sorry to hear about your D’s injury. My S was injured last spring during a performance and had surgery in June. It REALLY messed up his summer prep time - he had planned a dance intensive and lots of time in the gym to improve his strength for dance partnering (along with everything else that needed to be attended to). He had very limited arm mobility (fortunately not leg, or worse) until December of his senior year. It threw off many of his plans as he prepared for his auditions that started in November. In the end he healed nicely, but learned some very valuable lessons about how precarious plans can be, that physical health is precious in this business, and that no path is EVER a straight line. Sometimes the side roads have lessons that need to be faced and learned from. I think the “knocks” he has experienced thus far are only a “taste” of what he will have to deal with in the years ahead. All the best to your D.

@EastchesterMom – Thank you… she has fully recovered. Actually, my wife and I had been preparing for the pride injuries not the bodily ones. Best of luck to your D.

Eastchestermom, just another AMDA alumni note - both Caissie Levy (Fantine) and Kyle Scatliffe (Enjolras) in the Broadway revival of Les Mis are AMDA grads.

And can I just say again how amazing all of you parents are. My daughter is just a freshman and we are still three years away from this craziness, but I have learned so much. Hats off to all of you for going through this stressful, joyful and sometimes painful journey with your kids. I can only hope I’m as prepared and deal with it as well as you all are. This truly is an eye opening forum and I’m so thankful I found it early!

@mom4bwayboy - Glad to heat your son recovered well and you are definitely right about the lesson learned. My D told me about one of her dance instructors who had some success on Broadway until she blew out her knee right in the middle of an audition. The instructor decided as she was in post-op that it was time to teach and leave the performing behind. My D now understands why the instructor told her that cautionary tale.

@sopranomtmom, and all you parents of underclassmen: you are indeed lucky to have found this thread early. I didn’t discover it until the audition season was nearly over…and only after I was politely but firmly told to stop venting on the Acceptances thread! If I only knew sooner, maybe I could have guided D better and avoided some heartbreak.

@eastchestermon- my D’s friend is in her last semester at AMDA and in that semester you start going out to audition and she has received callbacks for a couple different national tours. She had been very happy there and has found the training challenging

@broadway95 - good to know. I got a good vibe from the place when we went to the audition.

One of my D’s friends is at AMDA (started this year). She is D’s voice teacher’s D and chose it over Rider MT.
I can ask questions for you if you’d like @eastchestermom or see if she would talk to your D.

I wanted everyone on this thread to know that this year was apparently the hardest year ever to be a girl in MT!! We have been talking to coaches and every one of them has said this year was the worst they have ever seen in terms of off the chart talent and competition beyond the usual intense competition. It sounds like to have any acceptances this year was a pretty big deal!!!

@evilqueen I heard the same thing from my Ds coaches. It’s nice to know that others have heard the same.

@evilqueen and @bwaybabie- do you think that goes for acting too? Or just MT?
There was a population bubble this year. My D’s senior class is the largest in our district in a decade. I wonder if that is a national thing? Or just regional.

@evilqueen we’ve heard the same things. Our D has a friend who is a junior at Pace and she said the she would NOT want to be competing for a spot this year - many of the incoming freshmen are more talented than some of the seniors in her program.

FYI. Just got our rejection from NYU. They emailed it to us. Ugh. Another one to add to the pile!
