I know at Coastal Carolina there were still many more applications for MT than for Acting or Physical Theatre again this year. For those going through the process in the future, you may want to check at each school to see if you can audition/be considered for both MT and Acting. At CCU, the Acting majors can still take dance and voice. And CCU cross casts so MTs perform in plays and Acting/PT majors perform in musicals. Yes, there are differences in the required courses, but if you get an Acting offer from a school you love, then you open up an option that you may end up loving.

Otterbein also considers an MT applicant for Acting BFA and many of the courses are the same. There is also opportunity to take private voice lessons and extra dance as an elective.

I think in general over the last couple years with the Glee effect there has been a steady increase each year of MT applicants. Last year at each of the school talks they said it was a record breaking year for applicants and it has seemed to increase again this year. @dramamom0804 my D’s high school class was like that last year the largest the district had had in a decade

@dramamom0804 - As austinmtmom said there are more MT applicants than straight acting, however if you’re applying to a school that let’s you audition for both, the acting kids end up with the same or even lower odds than the MT kids. For example at college A MT kids who also try for acting are competing for 16 slots while the straight actors are competing for only 8. Just something for future acting applicants to keep in mind.

There is a big poulation blip this year; at our high school, instead of our average 3 - 4 extremely talented girls, there are 12 extraordinarily talented senior girls. And that’s after another 10 or so dropped out over the years because they didn’t get cast, got involved in sports or other activities, developed a bigger interest in tech, etc. There was a lot of competition for very limited roles.

And some schools like CMU take MT candidates and place them in acting spots, like @asstToTheMT’s D. Which is fine, but means all the numbers for MT are spilling over into acting at some schools. @Bethsmom - 12 girls? Wow! How big is your class? .

I have a theory that some of the moms here have heard. In January 1996 there was a blizzard. I lived in the DC area and the federal government was closed for a week so it was pretty bad. I’m sure at a minimum the entire Northeast experienced the same weather. So, um, not a whole lot to do that week… I know many children born in October/November of that year. Everywhere The D has gone to school she was always in the largest class ever in the history of the school. Even kids applying for more traditional majors this year are being rejected and waitlisted.

I stand firmly by my blizzard theory!!

BTW, The D isn’t a blizzard baby. She was born in April! LOL

My D is a junior and based on this information from coaches she will be applying at schools where she could also be an acting BFA and get training in MT. More opportunities is what we need :)

Hmm @evilqueen. That was not my intention, as a mainly acting mom. Lol. It’s quite competitive over here in acting already. Can you say backfire?

Haha @dramamom0804 it was Ellen at MTCA that suggested she do that because my D indicated that even though she wanted MT she wanted programs that were strong in Acting because she feels Acting is the foundation of everything. Basically it just added a bunch of schools to the list :)

@bwaybabie – I feel your pain…D’s official rejection from CMU arrived in the mail yesterday. In the same mail was AMDA’s FA offer, so there was sweet with the bitter! @evilqueen – yes, I heard too that the competition for MT girls was the toughest ever this year. I’m beyond thrilled that D got what she got, and so is she. Now it’s one week to opening night of her last HS show, and we’re going in with a smile!

@bwaybabie we just got the same email. However, I saw elsewhere on CC that their costs were going to be $72k this year, so a yes wouldn’t have mattered anyway.

@cheeseheadmike – $72K!!! My older D is graduating from NYU just in time…it is without a doubt the most expensive college in the US when you factor in the cost of living in NYC. I know some parents who rented an apartment for their NYU kids that cost the same as the dorms – and the kids each got their own room, with no worries about moving in and out each year (and let me tell you, at NYU, moving day is one large pain in the neck! Double-parking on Third Avenue and throwing your kid’s stuff on the sidewalk as fast as you can before the cops show up is no way to start the year, but makes for some funny stories!
