Class of 2018 (yikes!) - Sharing,Venting, Etc

@ EastchesterMom so happy for her. There is a place for everyone just taking a little longer and different paths than we thought. I hear all about the girls competition I have to say having a son the competition has been unbelievable this year. I have heard from two schools its the most competitive they have ever seen.

Guess the “Glee factor” isn’t giving any of us any glee.

@NewYorkSon - I remember being surprised last year running into several boys (that certainly had the right look and talent) at auditions that had taken a gap year because they didn’t make it into programs the previous year. While the amount of MT boys are less than MT girls there is still a great deal of competition and they certainly are not shoe ins.

$72K? Crazy… heading out to buy a couple more Poweball/Mega Millions tickets…

We got the email from NYU this morning- D was wait listed!! I almost wish it had been a no- at least then we could move on…

@broadwayorbust18 – congrats on the WL! With so many kids getting into multiple schools, I’ll bet D gets in off the WL in no time…don’t give up!

EastchesterMom - LOL - I cracked up when I saw your glee comment. Thanks to all of you and your humor for keeping me (somewhat) sane during this process!

@BethsMom – I figure you have 2 choices in this crazy process: laugh or cry. I bet we’ve all done plenty of crying in recent months, so let’s laugh when we can…it feels better!

Thanks, Eastchester Mom! She does have a few acceptances to choose from- 2 BA MT, 1 BA Acting. NYU was sort of for the ego!- We can’t afford for her to go there!

As an actual bill payer over in $72k fantasy land… can I just say that CC rumor does not the truth make. When I read it several posts back I thought you all were talking about CMU and got kind of excited (yay… they will pick on CMU now instead of NYU which has all along only been a few thousand dollars more) but I now realize you are talking about NYU. Can I just say so far: false. :-)

I’m not sure what you’re saying false to, @halflokum – the price of NYU? Daughter just got her offer and total cost is over $70k, not including any sort of travel.

@AsstoTheMT, Here is more granularity than anyone (official) will ever give you. Right off the 2nd semester sophomore year bill and assume the first semester was similar. Also this is a bill of a 2nd semester sophomore MT. Fees and housing go up so this is more I suspect than a freshman would pay.

I think you will find that YES Tisch is an expensive program. But when you throw around numbers like 72K… and the cost is actually <68K which I agree is HORRIFIC, it’s not as different from programs like CMU than you might think. You are talking 4K+ difference between 72 and less than 68. Are you talking first class travel? I’m happy to let my kid take the bus (except she can’t when she comes home but DOES everywhere else she goes).

New York City is VERY expensive. Housing is accordingly VERY expensive. It isn’t Pittsburgh (no offense to Pittsburgh which I think is a lovely city.) The costs at NYU reflect that in spades. But other programs also have their fees, transportation costs etc. When rounding up, do so everywhere in order to keep it honest.

tuition 23433
drama liability 65
registration & svs fee 1188
acting lab fee 260
housing 7414
meals 1585
total 33945
multiply x2 67890

@haflokum - the FA information that students entering NYU for next year were given with their acceptances today indicates their total cost next year will be $70,606. This does not include travel. The difference between your figures and @AsstoTheMT 's is only $2,716. that difference must reflect increases in tuition and fees from this year to next. Looks like she then estimated $1400 for travel for the year to bring it up to $72,000. So her numbers are directly from the school with the exception of her estimated travel costs.

@vvnstar, Yeah well, I have my doubts and I’m auctioning my daughter’s seat in the MT program for anything less than the $3830/year in increased tuition the Tisch cost estimates are for 2014-15 over what we are paying. Opening bid starts at $2000. Please bring my baby home so she can actually clean her room and help me with the dusting. :-)

@halflokum, I appreciate your take on this, and I have enjoyed your posts for over a year now. I’m extremely glad your child is having a tremendous experience–I watched it happen from the sidelines.

I’m not sure why you are accusing me of “throwing around numbers.” And I am not comparing NYU to CMU in any way (they are VERY different schools and have different things to offer), so I’m not sure why you bring that up–maybe because it was mentioned a few pages earlier? I have also been given the comparable numbers for CMU, and it is in the $64k range (also not allowing nearly enough for travel expenses).

I was using numbers given to me from the financial aid page of NYU, where my daughter was accepted today. Here is the breakdown they gave me:

Books & Supplies

535.00

Fees

1,212.00

Room & Board

8,391.00

Loan Fees

29.00

Miscellaneous

1,000.00

Tuition

24,136.00

Term Total

35,303.00

So $35,303 per term is $70,606 per year. I don’t think I was the one who said $72k, but if I did, I was mistaken – it’s $1400 less. I think I said it was over $70k, which it is.

We live in Arizona. I like the bus too. However, a bus ride from Phoenix to NYC would take multiple days and be as expensive as a flight, so that’s not really our best option. I’m not sure why you think we’d even consider first class travel. I imagine there are several flights to be made per school year. There and back at the beginning and end of the school year, and round trips at winter and spring breaks…that adds up.

If I’m misunderstanding your tone, please say so, but you sound a bit defensive about NYU getting “beat up” and I’m not sure why–yes, it’s expensive. Yes, it’s a top school. Yes, their students get some great jobs. It’s worth the money, but people are still allowed to say “Ouch” when they see those numbers, aren’t they? Personally, I think Tisch is a great school and they have put tons of tremendous students to work. I don’t want to argue about it–I think we’re on the same page. But maybe this meandering thread has contributed to our misunderstandings. I hope I’ve cleared up my position. Wishing you all the best.

posts are exhausting and I am exhausted. Like you… I have a kid on the hunt for schools right now too and today was a big day.

I didn’t accuse you nor anyone else of anything. If anything… I’m accusing NYU of not giving out the real data and YES accusing every other school of not always doing that either. I could have said nothing and let the 72K just float out there as a number that the whole world will see forever. But I knew it was wrong. At least not reflective of this year. So instead of saying nothing… which would have been my preference because trust me… I’ve lived through a whole bunch of rejections today… I thought I’d take the time to post.

I will now turn my attention to my son’s world which has nothing to do with theatre and wish you all the very best. But in the meantime… just know that I did pull up my bill, and did my best to give the real numbers. Done.

@halflokum the process has been and continues to be a grind until the very end. We started the week waiting to hear from 7 schools, and 5 rejections later we are left with 2. We are so greateful that D has 3 offers, 1 of which we can actually afford.

@cheeseheadmike, word. I am not insensitive to cost. I hope everybody reading here gets that. I am, like the rest of you, trying hard to really drill down on what we have got. Many factors matter. Cost, location, fit, it runs the gamut. I am trying HARD to get REAL data to make REAL choices. I have paid way more attention to this thread than anything related to my son because as I’ve said before… those threads are boring… until they finally get interesting. But like you all, we are now (almost) at the end of the road. Sorting things out. Looking for facts. Finally able to drill down on things that we thought about at a high-level but don’t quite understand on the ground. We are not done. I’d love someone to hand me a manual for all of that stuff. I’m sorry if I came off funny on the Tisch stuff, but I was just trying to offer up a page to save somebody the trouble of searching for data that I actually had at my disposal.

Today was a day with disappointments, but also of very unexpected surprises that pretty much trumps that bad stuff. It’s a journey.

@halflokum I agree there are so many variables that go into our decision, cost being but one component. Information is key. I mentioned above that we can actually afford one of our D’s accepted schools, but I’m only half serious. Looking at the “Sticker Shock” thread I get the feeling that some of the schools may low ball their cost estimates by only listing the direct costs of T+R+B. That’s why we are making a point to visit all 3 schools in person, and asking some very pointed and detailed questions during the visits. Given that it is so hard for kids to transfer from one BFA program to another, we don’t want to make a mistake by choosing the wrong school.

Good luck to everybody in the remaining few weeks. It should all be over by mid-April or so.

I too was worried about the extras I didn’t think of prior to school. I have been pleasantly surprised that other than a sorority which is a choice, sending her packages and the amount of times we have decided to travel back and forth also a choice- I haven’t had any extras. My D works on campus 10 hrs a week and that covers her spending money and her extra voice lesson.
