Class of 2018 (yikes!) - Sharing,Venting, Etc

Kudos @dramamom0804 on some great parenting, as evidenced both by your daughter’s courageous honesty and by your willingness to turn on a dime and accept her choices about her future.

I do think some kids/families get so wrapped up in the thrill of the competition for slots in BFA programs that they can forget to seriously evaluate what they personally want from four years in college. It’s been said here often, but even the most competitive tippy-top auditioned BFA is not the best fit for many kids - particularly those with broad interests.

The tendency for 18-year-olds to change their minds is a big part of why I think it’s wise for many people to keep at least one great BA on their list. I can’t tell you how glad I am that our D did as she couldn’t have chosen a better fit.

What BA program did your daughter go to, @MomCares?

@broadwayorbust18 - She’s at Northwestern. Everyone (her teachers, coaches, parents, etc) had assumed she’d want a BFA, and she’d had great success in early auditions, but right before the main audition season started she decided she wanted to apply binding ED to NU. Although she absolutely plans to pursue a career performing as an MT, the ability to double major and immerse herself in challenging non-performance classes has turned out to be exactly what she wanted from college.

Thank goodness our kids know their own minds better than we do! :)

Yes, my daughter is leaning towards American for the same reason- the ability to double major. Im so glad she had a BA on her list!

I think today was supposed to be the last wave of Syracuse notifications, but I still heard nothing (nothing in my spam folder either). I’m guessing I should probably call? Is anyone else in a similar situation?

Yes, give them a call @daniellececelia‌! I hope they answer the phone better than Purchase did. I had to call multiple times and couldn’t leave a message because the voice mailbox was full! Then when I finally got through all he said was the letters are in the mail. Ugh.

Don’t be afraid to email admissions departments on weekends and evenings- at this time of year they are working overtime and you just might get a speedy reply!

Speedy? Not Wagner, I can tell you that…phone calls and email have yet to be responded to days later. But who cares…as you probably read on the Acceptances thread, D got into Molloy/CAP21 yesterday…YES YES YES! The clouds have parted, the sun is shining, it’s a brand-new day for D! This after her spectacular performance at her last HS musical this past weekend…a standing O! I believe in fate … all the misery of the last couple of months happened for a reason.

Have all Syracuse acceptances/rejections gone out? We are certainly not expecting an acceptance since D said this was truly her WORST audition ever, but I’d still like to get closure on this last pending school.

Update on the fiasco where my d received a giant congratulations package with her rejection letter. I called the admissions department and voices my concern. after @5 minutes of a grossly unsure what to say work study student I was put on hold for another 5 minutes at which time I spoke with the asst dean of admissions who apologized profusely for @ 5 additional minutes. He later called my daughter to apologize as well. She was He had never heard of this happening previously. I assured him that based on the blogs I had seen here it was more common than he thought.

NYU studio placement email came this evening. Daughter is in MT, yay!

I don’t think I’ll ever understand how NYU works…

@AsstToTheMT were MY as well with Tisch

What is it that you don’t understand about NYU, GSOMom? The way they do their studio assignments?

Yup, The D didn’t audition for them, but what I read here seems confusing. Is seems that you can audition for MT and not get an MT studio. Is that correct?

Yes, that’s correct…NYU places you based on the audition; there is no choice in the matter. Only one of the studios is MT.

You can specify that you are only interested in MT, and they will only consider you for the MT studio. But if you say you’re also interested in and would consider the various acting studios, they will put you in one of those if they want to accept you for acting instead of MT. There are several Acting studios and only one MT studio. My daughter auditioned for MT but said she would consider acting studios (they ask you online in the application process, but then they also verify at the actual audition, so you can change your mind up until that point). D was placed in the MT studio.

Thanks for deconfusing me!

My son is really struggling with this decision right now. Just hoping he gets what he needs from NYU on Thursday Friday to make the decision. He keeps hearing you will know when you get to the right place and feel that right fit. He is stressing overthinking everyone saying that to him. I think it is much more it has to be can you see yourself being able to make a home here for four years. I think both choices are great schools and he cant go wrong as far as what he will get from either school. It has been a long weekend after our trip to Ithaca. We just cant wait for him to decide. I know you are all in the safe spot just needed to vent a little. My husband sick of hearing me LOL

We’re listening NewYorkSon, and feel your frustration.
