Class of 2019 (the journey begins) - Sharing,Venting, Etc

@vocal1046, I hear you! I probably could/should have just posted the quotes without naming the school. I guess I wasn’t too concerned because my child had already finished the process last year.

Here’s hoping that I’m anonymous enough and that my comments are not too critical as to alienate any schools/reps that my child may encounter in the future.

S was put on the wait list for Wright State. Letter came yesterday.

@vocal1046‌ I do understand this is a public platform and that theatre is a small world. I would also say, that we could have chosen not to use a sarcastic tone. However, I do feel like it is important to share information about programs, that is why we are all here. I really hope someone from the program IS reading this. Maybe they will realize how what they are putting out is perceived. My D was really put off by their comment to “not act the song” (btw this is something they did with others as well) she was not asked to do her monologue and they had no dance call. This is an auditon based BFA MT program. If there is someone out there considering this program for next year, I think this is important information for them to know. Everything mentioned in these posts are facts. Hopefully they will start making some improvements inside their program to make it appealing for students to make them their first choice.

Here is a past thread on ECU:

I am not too worried about the MT Thought Police and Mr. Cladwell finding out my secret identity.

Hey guess what?

It’s Tuesday.

That means … mail!

(Hopefully!)

I hope it’s something other than an invitation to apply, @KaMaMom. I prayed for you this morning. There has to be some good news sooner or later. Don’t give up.

Does anyone have any Intel on when University of Michigan is releasing MT decisions?

@limbo2019 … I’ve seen a couple recent acceptances for U of M on twitter.

@KaMaMom‌, Were they acting or MT? And was it Michigan or U of M? There has been some confusion with other schools already. When did you see the acceptances and where on twitter?

I think they meant U of Miami …someone questioned the poster. At least I hope so…

Search “bfa u of m” on twitter. There is a tweet from 3/6.

(Even though that twitter is public, I hesitate to post a link or her name.)

ETA: Ha!! I just looked deeper … @shopforpunky you are right! It wasn’t Michigan!

Here’s a share – I was able to observe a community theatre audition last night – my D was auditioning for Dogfight. Wow. All of those college auditions paid off – she was so poised and put together compared to others (very talented others I might add). Just had a polish that others didn’t. And, though she was competing with the 20-25 year set, she got a callback! It was a nice shot in arm for her during this March Madness. So, for about 2 hours, I was able to think about something else! And, now back to your regularly scheduled programming.

Someone we know called U of Michigan last week and they stated they are sending decisions within the next 2 weeks. Doesn’t really narrow it down, I know.

@Divamamacita, hope she gets it. What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger for sure.

Love your story @Divamamacita! Sometimes this college process is a blow to their confidence and they need something like that to validate their talent. And btw, the definition of “March Madness” will forever change in my mind after this year!

Although the waiting is hard, I think the colleges also have a tough time. Because it is so competitive to get into an audition MT program many applicants apply to MANY programs to better their odds of getting in somewhere. My S applied to 11 programs…but we know of kids who’ve applied to 20 programs or more! We were warned early in this process that it is not uncommon for some kids to get into multiple audition programs…while others only get into 1 or 2…and many kids are often encouraged to apply to at least one “safety” non-audition program, just in case…

I have also heard of schools who have, in the past, offered 35 or 40 acceptances hoping to yield a class of 18 or 20…only to have everyone accept. Which, in turn, makes them hesitant to repeat that the next year…so they make waiting lists and priority holds. So then the schools want an early commitment…so they aren’t left hanging if an admitted student decides to go elsewhere…they still have time to offer that spot to someone else…someone who may JUMP at the chance to go to that school. Who knows, some schools may offer acceptances to only 20 applicants…only to have 15 turn them down to go elsewhere during the last week of April. It puts the school in a tight spot, too.

On the OTHER hand, applicants are often waiting to hear from schools…and don’t want to decide on a particular school until they hear from ALL the schools they applied to…and that’s especially true if finances are a concern. Parents need to know how much scholarship or grant money a school is willing to give…so they HAVE TO wait until they hear from all the schools. Kids often will go to a 2nd or a 3rd choice school, if they get a really great scholarship, over a 1st choice school who offers much less.

It’s a catch 22. My S has been accepted to several schools…but money is a concern. 2 of the programs that he has been accepted to have asked for commitments earlier than the traditional May 1st date…and both schools are HIGH on his list…but he still has 2 schools, that he loves, that he’s waiting to hear from…but, who knows, maybe the schools he is still waiting to hear from is also waiting…waiting to see if a another applicant declines so they could offer my S the spot.

It would be easy if he had only one dream school, or if he could to afford to go to any school…but it’s not as easy as that.

On the OTHER hand…there are applicants out there who are still waiting and hoping to get their FIRST acceptance. It must be very hard watching the calendar march on, seeing other kids get accepted to multiple schools…and still be waiting to hear.

Personally, I think it only fair, to both those kids who are still waiting…and to the schools, as well…that those kids who have been already been accepted to multiple programs should inform those schools who are at the “bottom” of their acceptance list…that they won’t be attending. The schools on the top of the list…they can wait a little longer. But if an accepted kid already know that they won’t be going to a particular school that they’ve been accepted to…they should release that spot for some other kid who is waiting and hoping… It’s the right thing to do for the other hopeful applicants…and it is the right thing to do for the schools as well.

Preach.

I think there is an argument to be made on both sides of that question (holding or letting go) Personally, I do think it is polite to decline once you are sure, but the acceptance is yours until the deadline, and everyone needs to do what works for them. For those out there that are getting late notifications (all those schools that wait til end of march or beginning of April) finally- one problem you don’t have to deal with- I don’t think they pressure for an earlier decision! And btw- one of the hardest parts for ME last year was declining schools. There was nowhere (except her parent’s alma mater- where we had FORCED her to apply) that my D wasn’t willing to go. We had researched til blue in the face, we had visited every school, she loved aspects of every school, and she had fought so hard for her acceptances- it was hard to let them go

It is hard to let them go, but it should be done, especially if you know that you have no intention of attending that school. And, it should be done with the utmost respect. Burn no bridges in this field! Some of those profs are active professionals, directing Summer Stock Theater and more.

@16bars I totally agree once the kids know for sure they should release the schools they won’t be attending. Hoping schools hurry with financial packages so decisions can be made. BAL everyone!
