Class of 2019 (the journey begins) - Sharing,Venting, Etc

I hope everyone feels free to call it wherever they see it from now on (not criticising the person but the behavior), and to point to the particular offending language, as in my opinion we’ve been suffering from too much thinly-veiled snarkiness recently! We can all use some help in playing nice, and I know sometimes comments are misunderstood and this may help us all be both kinder and more clear.

Also, I have personally met many CC posters, and know firsthand that some people simply do not have a snarky bone in their bodies, and so I personally may less often misinterpret their comments here.

I applied to Umich for MT and also for the college of arts and sciences and recieved admission to both. The schools are separate entities in terms of admission: they don’t affect each other. Passing the prescreen for MT doesn’t mean that you are automatically admitted to the university

Totally agree with @momcares, and just wanted to add that I’ve gone back later to read my own posts, only to be a bit horrified about how snarky I unintentionally sound. My point being that Because so much context gets lost when posting online/anonymously, possibly some unpleasantness is unintended. I’ll also add, as a parent of a high school freshman, I’ve found this forum to be a wealth of knowledge, I’m rooting for you all, and appreciate you all. But the (thankfully rare) snark is a bit intimidating to newcomers like myself.

Same here… so honestly feel free to call it wherever you see it, then we can all resume normal play!

I disagree 100% @Momcares, it is not possible on this thread and other MT threads to “call it wherever we see it!” Fact.

@soozievt‌ - while it is definitely true that my D couldn’t have gone to Michigan based on her prescreen pass - and they make that quite clear if you do a school visit ahead of time - that you must apply dually if you wish to attend no matter what - I really don’t see the harm in my D feeling like passing the prescreen was a win for her.

Obviously future folks need to understand that if you want to attend Michigan with or without MT admission you must dually apply - but I do not see why it is so important that we hammer the semantics home to a kid who feels like the prescreen pass was also an academic nod.

When S applied to UMich last year we briefly considered having him apply also to dance major, but the extra cost/stress did not seem worth it (separate app fee and prescreen submission, with dance prescreen being more intense than the dance portion of MT prescreen). We visited the dance dept and got a very good vibe about S’s possible admission (he’s a 6’ tall male who can dance, but we’ve all heard THAT before). In the long run, it did not seem worth the effort to try for this “back door”. Even though S is very strong dancer and loves ballet (believe UMich is more well known for contemporary dance, but don’t quote me), he was really only interested in MT, and it sounded like there was very little collaboration between the two, that dance major ballet would not even fit into MT schedule and dance concert commitments would likely overlap with MT show commitments. S applied to UMich knowing that MT BFA was the only reason he would go there. So I guess if you’re looking for a back door to UMich MT, make sure it would actually work. If going to UMich is the ultimate goal, then do whatever you gotta.

@kategrizz:
I agree that anyone who is invited to audition for MT at U of Michigan should feel pretty great for passing the screenings (currently in place for both academic and artistic review)! I certainly didn’t mean to imply that isn’t terrific by any means at all! Making it past any sort of prescreen is ALL positive!

What I was commenting upon was a member stating an academic ACCEPTANCE to U Mich without the BFA acceptance if ONLY applying to MT (though the member did not clarify if they only applied for MT). I was inquiring how this could be so if someone didn’t apply to two majors or dual degree programs at this university. I was curious. Then, discussion ensued so I was trying to clear up this fact. It isn’t meant to judge what someone’s approach or goal may be with regard to this great college. I was only trying to address what is a POSSIBLE outcome from applying for MT at this school and what’s not. Truly nothing more than that.

Some schools have a bifurcated process where you can be admitted separately to the school and to the MT major hand some it is all or nothing if applying for MT.

I think any sort of achievement with regard to college admissions is worth feeling good about and applauding. For my D, being invited to audition based on academic review at U of Mich (there wasn’t an audition prescreen at the time) or being admitted to Emerson itself, but without the MT acceptance, didn’t really mean all that much because they were not difficult academic admits with her profile and moreover, she had no interest in considering any of her colleges without the BFA acceptance. But that doesn’t mean other ways of viewing it are not meaningful to those involved!

@Kategrizz It IS an artistic AND academic win according to the University of Michigan for your D to have passed her prescreen. It is an inarguable point according to the University of Michigan. Kudos to your daughter.

^^@puma69: Agreed, it is indeed a win to pass an artistic and academic screening at U of Michigan!

For those who have younger kids, they may wish to have clarified that the way U of Michigan works is that it is a screening and you don’t get a separate academic acceptance if you are not admitted for MT. Not everyone is familiar with this. Like I said, I’ve seen in the past that some thought if you make it past the academic screening, you are accepted to U of Michigan itself. I can see why those unfamiliar with the process (not talking of those posting today), could get confused because there are other MT programs that DO accept students separately to the college and to the MT program (ie., Elon, JMU, Coastal Carolina).

Has anyone heard anything from JMU? Positive or negative… I know KatMT said by 4/1, but after another empty mailbox today starting to wonder if no news is bad news!

Didn’t she say that letters would go out this week? Just a little while longer, @SJBmab‌, just a little while longer.

I agree it’s a nice academic nod and should be experienced that way by families, but I do think it was important to clarify in case future readers thought they could actually attend based on that nod if they were not admitted artistically and had only applied as MTs.

I don’t agree that it’s a fact at all, and really hope that if you see bullying here by anyone, at any time, you will feel free to call Unnecessary Roughness (or your foul of choice), as that behavior isn’t helping any of us and has in fact been driving some very kind and helpful posters away, which we all want to prevent in the future. Of course bullying is not the same as respectfully expressing varying opinions, or trying to clarify complex subjects.

It’s easy to feel defensive if we think our kids’ options, decisions, talent or feelings are being criticized, especially during a very competitive, stressful and subjective process (I know I have experienced that), so it’s even more important that we all help each other practice constructive and supportive behavior, even when we may disagree with each other.

Trust me, after today NO ONE will ever see it any other way @soozievt.

Fact @Momcares. Your opinion is your opinion, but Facts are indeed Facts. And like others who I have come to dearly like, appreciate and respect…I will take my leave…sometimes it is difficult to stay away when others are so badly and unjustly treated. I will see if I can stay away for longer this time. Peace

Passing off opinions as facts happens all the time on these threads. I’ve been called on it. And I see an awful lots of that going around. Most posters have an agenda/opinion. It all seems like anonymous opinion to me.
I guess it is just a matter of opinion! heee heee

Peace, and feel free to come back any time as I’m sure your knowledge and opinions can add value. Best of luck to you and your child next year!

OK! It is time for donuts! I will take a cherry filled one from our local, non-chain donut shop! What’s your favorite?

Man, I am trying so hard to lay off the donuts, but pass an avocado please.
