Kinda chilly here in southern Ohio. Wright State kids have gotta be lovin’ that underground tunnel system about now.
By the way everyone … how crazy is it that first semester is in the can??
I just found a receipt in my purse from my D’s Rockford audition and can’t believe it was a 11 months ago … it seems like it was another lifetime.
My kid is loving Nebraska - in fact, she thinks her break is WAY too long and she’s dying to get back. (She heads back this Saturday … my other kid went back to college about a week ago.)
Hi all! This time last year, audition season was just ramping up…so glad that’s behind us! My S is loving TCU and was just cast in Best Little Whorehouse. My husband and I already have our plane tix LOL and the show isn’t until April! Congrats @EmsDad on your D being cast :-). My S isn’t headed to OTA. He submitted everything for Strawhat last week, so we’ll see
@toowonderful I heard it has been a very “kind” winter thus far. I’m from Arizona though… So… It’s the first one!
Don’t worry @destiny95 - by the time you graduate you will be a winter pro!
It just snowed in Philly for the first time this year! Of course it’s much colder at home and on my last day there it was below 0 so I was very glad to get on the train…I’m back at school early to rehearse for a show and I’m psyched for second semester although a little nervous about juggling homework, class, rehearsal, eating and sleeping!
@mom4bwayboy , My D likes the tunnels…but since she’s a true Texan, it’s going to take her awhile to adjust to the temps.
And the wind. I keep telling my S they should take up kite flying for recreation.
I just to provide an update on my son’s decision and progress. He was originally the class of 2019. He was accepted to multiple schools, but wait listed at the one he really wanted to go to. After much soul searching, he opted to take a gap year to hone his skills, get some more theater experience outside of high school and to prepare to reaudition and apply to his dream school along with a handful of others. He dances five time a week, belongs to 3 choirs, has three voice lessons a week, has worked with an outstanding college audition group and auditioned for and made continual shows that will run through May. He also takes writing classes at Second City and acting classes at Piven and the Acting Studio in Chicago. One of the greatest by products of this gap year is that he can see what it takes to live this life and he has learned the art of time management and organization. He was set to audition for 12 schools including his dream school. We also had the time to visit a number of these schools that we did not have last year. In early November we visited Emerson College in Boston. He auditioned as a early action applicant on November 7th. He was notified of his acceptance into their MT program on December 15th. What a Christmas present! As a result, we reduced his auditions from 11 more to only 4. His dream school audition is in about 10 days. At this point, he is conflicted as he really loves Emerson too. As soon as his audition results are in, we will be sitting down and evaluating his options. I can’t tell you how much doing an early audition has improved his confidence. As a family, we are ecstatic that he chose a gap year.
@martin247998 Your son sounds like just the kind of person who does NOT need college to succeed. He appears to be able to manage multiple fronts of the MT life and probably at the same or less cost and with much more flexibility than is allowed in an MT program.
Is there really a reason he feels he must go back to school? I ask because I homeschooled a couple of my kids for a bit and we had such an enriching program put together. They succeeded far more than at an institutional school and your son seems like the type to thrive without college.
Quick update, D LOVES LIU Post! Both MT program and campus life. Pledged a sorority. So happy. In fact she was asked to help with unified auditions this weekend. Look for the tall blond with a southern accent!
Is LIU, Long Island University? Spread the word!!!
@winnieroot thats great to hear! It’s so close to home my D didnt want to apply there and we hadnt heard great things about the campus life, I am so happy to hear differently!!
Long time to no post! I thought I’d give an update on my D’s journey at OU (University of Oklahoma/BFA MT) so far. She is simply loving it! She has been blessed with a roommate with whom she clicks & will be a BF for life. She is learning tons and loves her teachers. Having weekly private voice lessons starting freshman year was very important to her, and I’ve been so amazed by the maturity and growth of her sound already! As this is coming from a kid who was already a “singer first” and had experienced much success vocally with her legit and belt, the growth simultaneously thrilled us and took us by surprise when I demanded a sample song from voice class. The dance classes are taught by the school of dance faculty, and the drama classes are taken alonside drama majors so she feels she is getting the best of the best available, not watered-down versions. She was cast in her first production in the fall, and has another gig in the Spring. And the best surprise of all? She got an extra, unexpected scholarship for Spring semester… The best Christmas gift of the season! I told her that her goal of always being Prepared, Punctual, Professional, Positive and Poised must be working, and to keep it up! I am so proud of her, and feel so blessed that this program is such a fit for her. Because it is located in Oklahoma, I think many overlook this wonderful school. You may want to put it on your list and check it out. It is quite the gem! Oh, and they have nice football and basketball teams if you’re into NCAA sports!
@addicted2MT … though she didn’t apply, we did tour OU the spring before her senior year and loved the campus!
Glad to hear she’s loving it!
@KaMaMom - don’t get me started on the campus! It is picture perfect. There’s a room in the library that my D swears is straight out of Hogwarts. When we first visited, we were also taken back by the amount of art Everywhere! I can’t begin to count the number of sculptures and the student art displayed all around campus in & out of buildings. My D loves how supportive everyone is of the arts. Funny story: at student orientation (which the they do in small groups all summer) kids had to introduce themselves aloud & say their major. The people in charge would say “welcome” after each introduction of future engineers, writers or scientists… When my daughter said “Musical Theatre” she was surprised to hear “Oh, wow! Congratulations! We are thrilled to have you!” No further explanation was made, but they made her feel like she was something special from day one.
What are your kids planning to do this summer? My D is returning to Interlochen to work at their box office and front of house. She wants to wait until next year to audition for summer stock. We will get her for about five weeks and then she will be in Northern Michigan for the balance of the summer.
BTW, Ball State has been a perfect fit for my D. We get to go see her in April in a devised piece called LIFT. Can’t wait to see her perform.
S is probably coming home & working here this summer. Auditioned for summer stock @ OTA, but neither of the offers would generate much summer income (one would cost…
Hi all!
I’m sitting here in the cold and dark in the Blizzard of 2016 … and I thought what better thing to do than to check in w/ the other 2019’ers parents! (Hopefully, some of whom are in a much warmer climate with electricity right now.)
I can’t believe it’s been a year since we were all in the crazy audition/acceptance/rejection mode.
My D will wrap up the year at NWU being onstage in 3 shows, ASM’ing two and SM’ing one … what a crazy (and busy) year she’s had. She’s made so many great friends and absolutely loves Nebraska. (Something I doubt she’d ever thought she’d say … she really is a city kid and thought she’d always end up at an urban school. Life is funny for sure!)
She’ll be home for spring break starting next weekend and then home for the summer in May. She’ll work this summer for sure (probably retail) and possibly audition for a community theatre show - depending on who the director ends up being.
How is everyone else?
