Class of 2019 (the journey begins) - Sharing,Venting, Etc

My d broke her finger in dance class!

She played organized sports for years including 6 years of tournament softball and never broke anything (she even took a hard line drive off her facemask while pitching), and her first broken bone is suffered in Jazz dance class (she collided hard with one of the guys) - go figure. Didn’t stop her from going on a few nights later in Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson where she has to roll around in a wheelchair with her finger in a splint. The MT program head said, “I thought I told you guys not to take full-contact Jazz dance.”

She received lots of AP credits at Western Michigan and took 19 hours this semester so that she will begin next fall as an academic Junior, although she is not planning on trying to graduate early (although many of the Seniors graduate a semester early and she may do that). She loves the program at Western Michigan and has made some really great friends who love to hear her Texas mom talk over the phone. The faculty is really great, especially Jay Berkow, the head of MTP at WMU.

She has loved all the snow in Michigan so far, but it has been a relatively mild winter (for them, anyway).

She has auditioned for summer stock but really wants to come home for the summer and will probably teach summer theatre camp at a professional theatre here in town.

@EmsDad … I think K’zoo is getting pounded right now (and has been) by the same storm that’s dumping on me!

And … poor kiddo! If anyone ever doubted that MT kids are tough … well, they shouldn’t! :-h

(I have power now btw … but my county has now been declared as being in a State of Emergency. Oy.)

Surviving this first Ohio winter! (Although it’s not bad at all)

Hello 2019er’s! I’ve been keeping up here and am so glad we are not in that waiting limbo we were in last year.

D is very happy at Illinois Wesleyan. There are 8 MT BFA majors and they keep them really, really busy. D has performed in 3 student-directed shows so far, plus choir concerts, dance concert, and is currently working crew for the main stage Hamlet. Cannot audition for main stage until beginning soph year. She is especially loving her voice lessons and how much they have enriched her voice.

She’s applying for theatre internships for the summer and hoping to find a performance opportunity also.

I love hearing how everyone is doing! Keep the updates coming!

As I’ve said before, D loves UArts, and we continue to be impressed by the training, the faculty, the personal attention, the individualization…

Freshmen are allowed to be in one show spring semester, and D was cast! It’s even more exciting that she gets to work with one of the original writers/original director, who is directing, and the songwriter, who is music directing. One of the first weekends of rehearsal (rehearsing weekends only–the directors are coming from NYC), the director and music director decided to write another song for the production, and they had the cast help! I think they are going to use the harmony D created. D has a lot of stage experience, but this was totally new for her and so cool! Her vocal teacher and her coach are working with her a lot on doing her part healthily; D plays the 12 year old protagonist who has a Brooklyn accent and whose speaking voice is loud, and she belts all the songs–in that accent and that age. It’s a fun stretch for D, but I’m thankful that her coaches are working so closely with her on it. She has also been in a couple student films, and she has modeled for a couple photography students.

Last quarter, D was chosen for a leadership group which meets weekly, and she just got a little work study job in a box office (just a couple hours a week), so she is busy, busy, busy, and she’s more tired than last semester, naturally. But, she is still enjoying her studies, rehearsals, other activities (including just hanging out with friends), and being in the city. The latter has been great for her; UArts’ location and relationship to theatres means she’s been able to see great performers and productions for really cheap or even free. She also went to NYC with friends once and saw a popular off-Broadway play for free because a classmate knows the director, and we’ll be going as a family for a couple days when we pick her up for Spring Break.

Right before heading back to UArts after Winter Break, D attended OTAs; she’s still waiting to hear about casting from one of the callbacks. That one was a theatre pretty close to us, so that would be nice, but we’ll see. She may also audition at her “home theatre,” which is always a good experience. She was hoping to attend other summer stock unifieds, but her schedule didn’t permit that. There also is a possibility that she’ll stay at UArts for a month and work at their pre-professional camp. At this point, the summer is up in the air, as I bet it is with many theatre kids.

She is really missing our cats! I keep getting snapchats and texts about getting an “emotional support”…cat, duck, praying mantis…anything! Lol! (Obviously joking about the more absurd “pets,” but not about a cat!)

Thankfully, I still hear from her often–almost every day. I was worried we’d lose the closeness that we have, but we haven’t at all! Would I like to see her and actually be able to touch her more? Sure! Of course. But, she is right where she needs to be, and I’m excited for her and grateful. And yet still counting the days until Spring Break…

@KaMaMom - D is super excited today to have her “FIRST SNOW DAY EVER” thanks to the dumping that Kalamazoo received and last night.

@hopecladwell One of my D’s best friends is your D’s classmate! He loves it there as well!!

So happy to be reading such great updates from everyone!

My D is having a terrific experience at Hartt. Loves her roomie (an Actor Training student, so similar, but different experiences) and has felt so at home, supported, and challenged at the same time. She is ASM-ing her second show this semester and getting ready for juries (just feedback, it isn’t a cut program) and auditions for next year. Hartt has a different model and sophomores are cast in Sophomore Projects (dramas in the fall, musicals in the spring) that are fully staged productions, but they are only attended by other students and faculty, and are not open to the public. I have mixed feelings about that part of the program, but D is fine with it. She said that the belief is that students will still have a performance experience, with all that entails, but are more encouraged to take risks and do things outside their comfort zones. I know CMU also has a “no mainstage until Junior year” policy but I don’t know of many others. I do get to see her videos of her weekly voice studio Master Class, so I still get my fix of her performing (sort of). As for summer, she is up in the air still, but has some auditions coming up that we hope will pan out for her. She is happy and I am happy that she is happy. Hard to believe all of the stress and anxiety I put myself through last year at this time. Like everyone kept saying, she ended up right where she belonged.

@kategrizz - good to know. They are a small and very close group!

Hi everyone!

My son is having a very good and very busy freshman year. He was cast in the fall show, and he’s in the spring production as well, which opens tomorrow. In addition to dancing, almost everyday, he, and half of all the other MT kids have really caught the fitness bug and they go to the gym and work out almost daily. When he’s not in rehearsals or studying he enjoys going into Manhattan…and occasionally comes home for a weekend to see friends.

Right after spring semester ends he has a staged reading to do in the city…but that probably will only take a week or two. He didn’t do any summer stock auditions this year (he’s aiming to next year) so he’ll probably look into doing an internship in some youth theater and maybe do a few auditions. He’s also expressed interest in maybe taking a voice over workshop at some point during the summer.

I hope all your kids are enjoying their freshman year, It has been quite a year… Love hearing all the stories.

16bars - Where is you son attending school? Thanks!

Interesting hearing about all your summer plans! I’m not ready to audition for summer stock, and I think I want to be home for one last full summer, so I’m probably going to audition for a local show and/or get a job because having something steady during the school year is pretty tough if you’re rehearsing for a show. (I have just been ushering for department shows this year, which is great.) Next summer I’ll most likely apply for internships in Philly and maybe NYC.
@myloves I honestly miss my cats more than my friends or family, just because they can’t come visit me or Skype! My mom came down a few weeks ago to see me in a show, a new play about the Salem Witch Trials. I was psyched to be cast and we got to work with the playwright as he rewrote the script, which was really fun. A lot of the UArts shows are directed by hired guest artists, which is a great way to make connections outside the school. I feel really solid about building a network in Philadelphia.
My roommate and I spent yesterday in NYC seeing an off Broadway play that we had done scenes from in our acting studio! It’s really easy to take the Chinatown bus and I can’t believe I haven’t taken more day trips, although there are tons of shows to see and things to do here.

@MTVT2015 , congratulations on Salem. I heard it was a good show and that you did really well! I didn’t realize that you were able to work with the playwright; that’s so cool!

It’s so funny about missing your cats more; I think that’s exactly how my D feels. We talk/FaceTime/text almost daily, but she can’t snuggle the kitties and watch them in their funny antics (which she adores, as you could probably tell if you saw her snapchat stories over break, lol). Actually, sometimes, one cat rubs the phone or looks at her when we FT, but it’s not the same. Sending her pics and videos of them just makes her miss them more. I made the mistake of doing that a lot towards the end of last semester because I thought she’d enjoy it. She did–too much! All of her talk about having a cat (or, sometimes only half-jokingly, other creatures) in her dorm started after that. Oops!

Here’s to more enjoyment of the UArts/Philly scene and a couple more trips to NYC (which my D would like to do, too)!

Hi Gang. My S loves TCU… He was cast in the fall show, in a student film, a staged reading, and member of the men’s choir and started rehearsals for the spring musical today. He has been cast in 2 professional shows while in school and just received and accepted an offer for an equity summer-stock theatre in Michigan for the summer. TCU is in Ft. Worth Texas and there are several theatres in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area that the students have the opportunity to audition for. Their first priority obviously are the shows @ school, but if it fits in their schedules, many kids perform in the DFW professional theatres… So great to be on the other side…last year was a wild ride…I can’t believe freshman year is almost over! So great to read about how everyone is doing!

@Mel2421 He’s at Montclair.

Can a fellow Uarts student/parent PM me for more info?

@destiny95, on the list of schools/people willing to answer questions, @myloves is the “rep” for UArts. Maybe PM them?

Hey friends, where is the long post from the parent of the son who was strung along at TSU on the Wait List last year. I think he landed at Ithaca?? Am I making this all up?

Yup! He’s at Ithaca. Here’s the thread, @Divamamacita - http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/musical-theater-major/1676940-the-process-our-year-plus-long-odyssey-getting-into-a-musical-theatre-program-p1.html

Thank you! @monkey13
