Class of 2019 (the journey begins) - Sharing,Venting, Etc

Also @attheballet another heads up on Montclair. You will need to snail mail the packet into the theatre department and that packet includes 2 more recommendations, another writing piece, headshot, resume and copy of transcripts. Thought my D was all done with those! I’m sure her teachers’ will cringe when they see her coming yet again!!! @emsdad that is so weird…must be some sort of glitch in the system that has the dad’s email linked as the primary. My H usually clears his email every few hours…I’m glad he forwarded it to me instead of deleting it!

Why any school is resisting the move to digital submissions is quite a mystery. It’s more redundant work for everyone, more complicated, more uncertain, and more challenging to track when these tasks are done piecemeal on paper through snail mail. If the fear is that easing the process will lead to an excess of applications, surely the prescreen can cover that concern. In fact, I’m surprised there are schools still offering auditions without a prescreen. I’d wager that they could rule out at least 50% of the applicant pool, cut audition days and work in depth with more competitive applicants, save travel expenses for those who have no chance, etc.

Didn’t someone say Elon reported choosing 26 Early Action applicants to audition out of 200 EA prescreens submitted? That saved 174 families a lot of wasted time, effort, cost, and continued anxiety while saving the school from expending resources on those pointless auditions. That’s actually a stunning statistic, if accurately reported. 75% of those confident and organized enough to apply early were not strong enough to pass through that process.

I’d love to hear from Montclair to better understand the benefits of this paper exchange by snail mail in a digital age.

I am going to be cheeky and say “state” school…we know how wasteful most state agencies are … :stuck_out_tongue:

@vocal1046‌ – the Elon numbers were what were reported out at the 10/31 audition. And, it wasn’t just for early action, it was for anyone that submitted prescreens early and requested one of the two fall audition dates. Imagine our surprise when we showed up expecting 60 kids at the audition and there were only 13. It changed the vibe of the day from a cattle call to a recruitment of the kids who made the cut. It really made for a pleasant experience. Curious to see what they do for the last three audition dates in the new year. My D had a wonderful experience there and it jumped Elon up to one of her top picks.

Email from UofM. I had written to make sure they had received everything for the pre-screen. Response was that it was all there and that he is included in the latest batch to the faculty and will be hearing soon. “Latest batch” leaves me to believe that there are more out there so don’t fret if you have not heard yet.

He did receive his college acceptance to Texas State University today so that was good.

Regarding Montclair and anywhere else that requires you to send documentation by snail mail; send it certified mail! Montclair emailed last year, two weeks before Unifieds to say they had not received son’s packet. I had the signed receipt (signed by a Montclair staff member), scanned it and emailed it to them. I also had a copy of everything son sent and was ready to send another batch. The packet was eventually located, but I was already a woman on the edge, and that snafu didn’t help :)

For anyone that’s been to a Unified before, how many schools can you expect to audition for in the time you have? 2 per day? 3? We’re setting up appointments for Chicago, and CCM sends us an appointment time that also says “Plan on spending all day with us.” Are you kidding me?! We’re trying to audition for 10-12 schools in 3 days time. With all the dance calls being separate times, and CCPA’s separate locations, is 10-12 even doable??

From what I’ve heard, 10-12 is quite high for Unifieds.

10-12 schools would be a lot for 3 days, but depending on the length of time each requires, it might be possible. There are a few schools (CCM, Carnegie Mellon, Michigan, Syracuse are ones I can remember) who asked to allow a 4 hour block. Sometimes you needed all of this time. Other times you could be done earlier than anticipated depending on where you fell on the list. Typically the schools who had an info session, dance call and songs and monologues all at the same audition requested this large block of time. Things have changed since we were there. I believe more schools are holding their dance calls at a separate time, sometimes off site. While others have done away with their dance call. We did find all of the schools very responsive and nice about asking specific questions regarding scheduling. So if you’re not sure, just ask.
You can definitely schedule 2 auditions per day without any concern. If you have an audition that only takes 20-30 minutes, you can obviously squeeze in more. Some people will fill in any voids in time with walk ins. And also make sure you allow time to get to and from off-site locations if you have schools whose auditions are not at The Palmer House.

We are planning on two a day, one morning and one afternoon session. We were given a 9-12 slot for CCM not spend all day with us. That is for on campus auditions.

We got a dance call with CCM at 9am, and their audition at 4:15pm. Are we safe to put something in the middle? say 1pm audition?

Of course it depends on how long you’re asked to be around for that 1 pm audition.

My D did three a day scheduled. We had two that were half days and did those Monday and Thursday. We picked early morning, noonish time and 4ish as a guideline. We always left a half hour prior to auditions because some had paperwork to fill out. That actually left time for walkins if you want to do them

Hey everyone, just wanted to say that I got a “No” from Michigan from my prescreen audition. I was surprised to get the e-mail this early (not near Dec. deadline) but oh well, on to the next schools! Best of luck everyone!

Kid just got a yes from Michigan! That’s 4 of 5. Waiting on the last one. This is exhausting!

Just got a “yes” from Texas State! Officially DONE with pre-screens, WOOHOO! (I sent pre-screens to Texas State, U of Michigan, Penn State, Ithaca, Pace, and Marymount Manhattan. “Yeses” from all of them!)

There are some schools that are going to be in Chicago for Unifieds as early as Saturday. We are starting on Sunday - have 7 scheduled (2 per day). Most of the schools we have encountered want a minimum of a 3 hour block. Several want morning and afternoons for auditions. If you stretch Saturday - Thursday you might be able to get 10-12 in.

I’ve only seen dance calls on the Sunday (the 1st). I have yet to see any schools offer regular auditions at Unifieds earlier than Monday the 2nd. @mommabears - which schools have you been able to schedule prior to Monday?

We are doing Syracuse and NYU on Sunday. I think NYU was available for Saturday too. I THINK BoCo and Penn State were both available earlier (I can’t remember for sure). I just looked - both CCM and Carnegie Mellon have dates on the 5th.

Congrats to everyone who passed prescreens today! Keep your chin up @attheballet…I know of several kids who didn’t pass the UMich pre-screen but still got into fantastic schools. My D submitted November 4th, but we haven’t heard anything yet.
