Class of 2019 (the journey begins) - Sharing,Venting, Etc

I agree with @toowonderful. Try not to read anything, good or bad, into what is said and done at auditions. Hard to do. But sometimes auditions D felt went great yielded a no, while ones she was iffy about produced an acceptance.

Can someone share there thoughts or know anything about the Baldwin Wallace Acting and Directing program? Does everyone get accepted? How many in program? Thanks.

@kategrizz‌ is the BW expert here! I’ve been picking her brain all morning about BW. lol

@Actingmajormom‌ I believe that the BA in Theater/Directing is non-audition. You should call the department to be certain. The MT degree is a Bachelor of Music housed in the Conservatory of Music
The Theater degree is a BA and is not part of the conservatory
That being said - my D is friends with several Theater majors
They take some of the same classes. My D is considering a minor in theater
Which includes some directing classes, and some additional acting classes. She has an upperclass(wo)man friend doing just that, and is leaning towards that same path. Many MT’s pick up a related minor (such as dance or theater) -although not all pick up a minor at all.

@kategrizz Thank you. It is one of my S, “safety” schools since he is not wanting to major in MT, but be in a school where he can take some classes and audition for MT shows. Do you know how many students are currently in the BA theater program?

@Actingmajormom‌ I do not know the size of the Theater department! I’m sorry - just much more familiar with the MT side of things! But call the school - I’m sure they will be happy to answer all of these types of questions!

FAFSA for 2015 is live today. Just completed ours so I guess this would be venting? I am blown away by what the government estimates our EFC to be. It made me laugh out loud. We would have to sell our house. Good look. They say the early bird gets the worm so don’t wait, and you can use last year’s tax return. Go class of 2019.

We are a two income household- and last year fafsa said our EFC was my entire salary
I got a good laugh out if that one!!

I was excited that I was able to pay for both semesters of son’s freshman year in 2014 for FAFSA and tax purposes. I’m hoping the significant drain of my “assets” will bump the EFC down a smidge. Something to look forward to TNMTDAD

It’s CRAZY how expensive a college education has become. Ok. Here is a staggering comparison. I got a full tuition scholarship, in-state tuition to the University of Memphis in 1990, $1800.00. That paid for full-time tuition for two semesters back in the day. Now, $1800.00 would cover books for two semesters. My how times have changed.

Fingers in my ears – la la la la la! %-(

That made me laugh, Divamamacita. You’re right. Just get in the water and swim. We’ll be broke when they finish but hopefully we’ll have seen our kids in some good shows along the way. ; )

Hi @TNMTDAD‌ The Viterbo site says that the notify prospective students in March after they have seen all auditions. So are you saying you have received notification of acceptance into the program?

Does everyone understand that the FAFSA is a formula? It’s about as objective as any formula could be factoring in what you earn, what you have saved, and how many are supported and probably in college at the same time and then just spitting out a number of expected family contribution. The FAFSA doesn’t care if the entire portion of one member of a two income family’s salary pays for college any more than they care if 1/2 of a single earner’s salary exceeds the EFC. That’s the beauty of it. You really want to be annoyed, save it for the CSS Profile. That one will make you mad you saved and invested because it will favor your neighbor who lived lavishly and spent every penny instead of saving, owning their own home etc.

The EFC is just that. It is what the government says they expect you to come up with to pay for college based largely on income and savings. It isn’t what they expect you to be willing to pay for college. Willingness is a personal decision. Willingness is what makes one family decide they need to ask grandparents to help with paying for the dream school, or what leads parents to take out loans or forego luxuries they might enjoy, etc. Willingness is also what makes some parents tell their kids no, here is your budget now go find a school that falls within that guideline or otherwise, figure out how you will make up the difference - and sticking to it. The EFC is also what recognizes kids with real need
whose families absolutely do not have the flexibility of getting creative and making sacrifices. Yes it can be gamed and that is annoying. Last I checked, the EFC didn’t ask about non-custodial parent income. I don’t get that and it bugs me or maybe I don’t understand the rationale. I know of examples of non custodial parents who could and would pay but didn’t have to because they were never asked to. That’s the topic of a whole other thread.

@halflokum- you are entirely right. Fafsa was probably easiest part of the entire process, it’s pure math- and it’s not like it I was surprised by the numbers it gave back to us. In the end fafsa played no part in the decision making process for us, because as you say, it was about what would work for us as a family rather than what the government says we can afford to pay.

From the NYT: Some colleges require the non-custodial parent to complete a separate form, the Non-Custodial Parent Profile. The schools then combine the two "expected family contribution” figures.

As I was completing the Fafsa form I was wondering if the colleges take financial need into consideration when selecting students. In other words if you have two equally talented students (of the same type), generally speaking do the colleges choose the student who can afford to pay more?

Some schools are “need-blind” Others are “need-aware”

Thank you @vocal1046. Do you know if there a list somewhere on cc that list the MT schools and whether they are “aware" or “blind"

Sorry, no. You can find this information on some schools’ websites and, as always, Google is your friend. Also. for general discussion of the topic search this forum for “need blind” admissions?"
