I understand what you are saying addicted2MT! We worry that the auditors will only see the audition stuff and never see live performances in a role on stage or even our kid’s work ethic and all that important stuff. It is what it is and at least everyone is getting an equal shot to show the same sort of stuff. I would encourage D to treat the audition as if it was truly a performance and not an audition. Get into character and pretend there is an audience out there (well, there is a small one!) and do her thing.
Please, please, do resist that temptation. A friend who is involved in admissions for one of the schools often discussed here has told me stories about receiving dvds of applicants’ performances. It’s a no no for many reasons, not the least of which is that filming of shows is not permitted in most licenses. This is not something that admissions committees want to see!
Not so many BFAs, but many BAs will look at supplemental materials, including writings and videos. But as alwaysamom says, be cautious of licenses.
OMG @alwaysamom rest assured, I would never, ever do that! :)) I was joking! Its funny because we all think our kids videos are precious. But very inappropriate to send for a multitude of reasons! :)) Again, my emoticon won’t laugh! maybe I’ve been abusing them…
Okay – here’s a dark thought a week before Unifieds. I have been thinking the our College Confidential group is skewed towards the success stories because 1) many are reluctant to share “redirections” (but bless those who have and continue to do so) and 2) I think our group is probably on the more prepared (okay, hyper prepared) end of the spectrum. When I was contemplating this at two in the morning, I realized that the forty or fifty kids who post there acceptances and redirections are only a tiny sliver of a much bigger pie. Someone help me back away from the cliff!
Redirected from Emerson, BU, Purchase, UArts, Fordham, Montclair, Hartt, and wait listed at Chapman…daughter ended up at her safety and is deliriously happy. She was one of two freshmen cast (lead role) in the fall Mainstage production and is thriving. I PROMISE your child will end up where they are supposed to be. <3
Well there’s those of us that arent sharing either way – success or redirect. There’s that. (I am hoping to do so in the end perhaps. Though it might be under an alias. ) B-) These are D’s “results” not mine, and I am not authorized at this point. [-X But I agree the group may have kids who are more prepared than the general auditioning population. Though not necessarily any more “talented.” Whatever that is.
I don’t know Diva, I think any parent who wanted to be truly prepared for this crazy process would research it. And if they did, there is no Way they wouldn’t come across this board. I feel everyone here has helped ready us for Unifieds and beyond. And I’m grateful to them all.
Those other parents not on here, could have more talented kids, but they will not be as prepared as us.
That preparation has it’s benefits & You can go into this home stretch, like me, knowing we did everything we can.
I know a LOT of kids who have gone through this process successfully, and who were very prepared, without ever reading a page here on CC. It’s absolutely possible to do that!
I agree that the knowledge to be gained from this board is invaluable. I can’t imagine having gone into this process without the background that I got from reading CC for the past few years, and that goes for both of my kids, not just the MT-interested one. I do know kids whose parents aren’t involved in their college applications, but I don’t know how a Senior who is applying in MT, both BFA and BA, to more than a handful of schools can keep up with all the deadlines and requirements, in addition to keeping up with school, rehearsals, lessons, and shows. My D and I decided at the beginning of this that I’d keep track of the requirements and schedules, and she’d get the work done for each school. It’s worked out really well for us, and I know this is definitely a special year for us to enjoy together.
I have to agree with @Divamamacita, I know lots of talented kids who are well prepared who are not on CC.
There are all kinds. My D has a friend that decided in January (two years ago) that she would pursue a BFA in college. Filled out her first and only college application in January, filmed and sent her prescreen on the fly, passed, auditioned at a school that is considered on this board as a Tier 1 BFA/MT school (on campus), and received an offer within 48 hours. She was completely oblivious of how clueless she was the entire time. However, the kid has talent to spare!
@Divamamacita, you really cannot think about the odds or the competition in this process. It is daunting, but it is going to be daunting from now on, as long as your daughter is interested in a career in theater. It sounds to me like your daughter has had some success and is probably quite talented, so you and (mostly) she just need to focus on that and work the songs and the monologues and give the auditions everything she has. She’ll find her way. I’m sure of it. But you’ll also have dark days and 2 in the morning sessions from here on out (I had a long night just a couple of days ago wondering what was going to happen to my S this summer), because this is a path full of nos even for the most talented kids.
@Divamacita. The two schools from which your daughter received “redirects” (Elon and Penn State) are, in my opinion, among the top ten, if not among the top five, of difficult admit schools. Especially, Penn State. Looking at their numbers, it is a real, real, long shot even for the most competitive of students. And your daughter made it to the interview at Penn State! She would not have made the interview if not talented. Plain and simple. Problem is, sometimes its not about talent. Her “no” likely had nothing to do with her talents and more to do with what type they want in their program. She probably just didnt fit the part. Not her fault. No amount of preparation or audition order would have changed that.
But some school will be looking for her type or will not be concerned with type. Unfortunately, these are the first two final results she received. These two schools have the pick of type and arent going to admit anyone, esp this early on, without 97% of what they are looking for.
If all of her schools are in the uber competitive range (CMU, CCM, Michigan) or Highly competitive (BWallace, FSU, Ithaca, Texas State) consider adding a couple more at Unifieds. Or attending LA Unifieds if need be. Its not too late for most schools. The longer I am in this process, the more I learn about top notch sleeper schools, like Northern Colorado. Or, find a school with a local connection. (I will pm you).
Please don’t allow these very early results to prevent you and your daughter from embracing and enjoying her upcoming auditions.
I agree 100% with @tramsmom (except that I would put TXST in the uber competitive range). Couldn’t have said it better myself. Chin up @Divamamacita ! Many more CC’ers will get No’s from those that redirected your D. They just haven’t auditioned for them yet! My D included!
Could someone please enlighten me as to what “redirection” means?
I think its a polite term for saying they were not accepted at that particular program. Thus, their path to the perfect MT program was “redirected” from the school said no to the another school that said yes. Also, ome schools will refer to “redirecting” students if they aren’t cutting it in their program and they suggest another major may be better for them.
Redirection is a nicer word for rejection
I liked using "denied"rather than “rejected.”
Ok, thank you, That makes more sense when the student is asked to change majors.
