Class of 2020 (sharing, venting, etc)

This one’s hysterical, too.

Cleaning coffee out of your keyboard is SUCH a pain.

@Autmlvs615 and @CTDramaMom I needed that this morning! Hilarious.

I’ve often wondered about the value of having a particular college on your resume. I don’t work in the theater business, but I do interview and make hiring decisions for software engineers. When I’m looking at a candidate I give no consideration at all to which college they went to. I look at experience to see what a person has done, then interview them to see what they can do. I may be wrong, but I would imagine that theater auditions are the same - who you know and what you’ve done gets you in the door, and your performance at the audition gets you the job.

@ABMT16 - Congrats!! Did you ever hear from UWSP? I think you were one who was still waiting for them?

Oh I needed all these today! LOVE THEM!

I love the Stanford story/parody. For all of us on this board, just remove Stanford and insert one of your favorite premier MT programs. Ha!

For some, the Ivy diploma or even acceptance, just like the CMU or U of Mich acceptance confirms “I am smart and desirable.” and " I am really talented". There is nothing wrong with this. It’s public affirmation of what one has probably heard and believed about onself one’s whole life.

For others, the non acceptance to these schools leaves an uncertainty, perhaps not to themselves but to the public. Are you good? Do you have any proof? Where are your credentials? We all know that we tend to want others to tell us what is talented, what is smart and so we look for that official stamp of approval; i.e. The school, or the big firm, or the title.

In this MT process, the people who got into the trinity schools got their talent ticket validated. Of course, they are as talented as they would have been without it. But they got affirmation early. The rest will have to get theirs punched later, on the job. It’s ok.

As many people say; win or lose in the admissions game, no guarantees after this point.
I really think that a lot of our kids were less anxious about the actual program they got into than what they thought it said about them. Or didn’t. Once they move past that, and they will, and likely are already, they can get down to the business of learning to make the most of themeselves.

@stagedoormama I never auditioned for Stevens Point. Thought about it, but their walk ins didn’t work well with my scheduled auditions. I had been waiting on Viterbo for two months when they said two weeks though. But thank you!

I think @mtmcmt hit nail on head.

I am still waiting on UWSP, though they send loads of academic acceptance papers.

@KatMT thank you for clarifying! I contacted the music admissions director and he let me know the same thing. So I suppose the correct way to say this is I’ve been accepted as a Music major at JMU, later to declare the BM Music Theatre major!

…But for the sake of saving time I’m just gonna be telling family members I got into the BM MT…

Anyone here have info on Hartt? Still nothing today.

In addition to @mtmcmt 's post, which is good, btw:

And then there are those who don’t need the Ivy diploma or even acceptance to the “tippy top tier” to confirm their desirability or talent. That might sound arrogant (though it’s really not), but they don’t need the public or private affirmation from those places. They are fine pursuing their passion without it and so don’t seek it out if the place doesn’t fit them for a myriad of reasons. They get their talent tickets validated at other places and excite in it. Or, they just don’t need to feel validated at any place, no matter what tier, and are just going to pursue their passion.

My D was like that. She didn’t even apply to the Big 3. She didn’t consider the “eliteness” of a program. She looked at the quality, yes, but also the fit for her. For various reasons, those 3 (and a few others people consider “near top tier”) didn’t make her list, and some people expressed surprise at it. It wasn’t because she was afraid of rejection or afraid she wouldn’t be affirmed; it was simply because they didn’t have exactly what she was seeking, and she is comfortable enough with herself and her talent to do that. Again, it isn’t arrogance. My D is super humble. She just knew what she wanted and placed her personal fit above prestige. I know many others on here and in real life who made similar choices and for the same reason.

Now, would she have been devastated if she had been rejected from all schools and thought that would’ve reflected negatively on her talent level? I bet she would’ve for at least a while–it’s human nature–even with her vocal coach (who is closely involved in an excellent program and has been involved in this process a long time) stressing to her repeatedly from the beginning of her junior year until the end of senior year that she was NOT to view any of this as an affirmation or reflection of her talent! (I wanted to hug her every time she said that, lol!) But, my D didn’t need the top schools’ stamp. She did audition at one that she was curious to see if she would get into, knowing that we couldn’t afford it, and she did get the artistic nod from them. But, she didn’t view it as a validation–more like seeing if her childhood dream school would accept her.

@myloves - well said. I agree with you…

hartt still waiting waiting waiting!!! But did all the acceptances go out or not??

Just got a call from Stevens Point!

Congrats. Now is when I start to get anxious since they started calling.

Hoping for good news for you @ParachuteBoy!

Me too @ParachuteBoy!

@KatMT–does JMU provide OOS waivers or the equivalent to freshman?
